In The Road to Character, David Brooks focuses on the deeper values that should inform our lives. Brooks challenges us, and himself, to re-balance the scales between our "resume virtues" - achieving wealth, fame and status - and our "eulogy virtues," those that exist at the core of our being: kindness, bravery, honesty or faithfulness.

Looking to some of the world's greatest thinkers and inspiring leaders, Brooks explores how, through internal struggle and a sense of their own limitations, they have built a strong inner character. The Road to Character provides an opportunity for us to rethink our priorities and strive to build rich inner lives marked by humility and moral depth.

Although this is a secular book, it includes discussion of major religious figures such as Dorothy Day and Augustine.

On October 31st David Brooks, Op-Ed columnist for the New York Times, will speak to the Global Leaders Luncheon at The Fairmont Chicago.

Brooks' book, The social animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement, is a story about how success happens. It is told through the lives of one American--how they grow, push forward, are pulled back, fail, and succeed. Brooks illustrates a fundamental new understanding of human nature by exploring the scientific revolution of our knowledge of the human brain in the last thirty years. We now know that our minds are composed mostly by our subconscious, which is no longer the mystery it was for the previous three thousand years. This realm of emotions, intuitions, biases, longings, genetic predispositions, personality traits, and social norms forms our characters and is where our most important life decisions are made.
