Architectural Collections

The Architectural Collections at the University of Texas Libraries form a nationally recognized architectural research center on campus and is considered one of the University of Texas Libraries’ collections of distinction. The UT Libraries advances teaching, fuels research, and energizes learning through world-renowned collections and digital content, innovative services, programs, and partnerships to develop critical thinkers and global citizens that transforms lives. All students, faculty, staff and citizen scholars have convenient access to literature, information, and visual and digital resources that support professional education in architecture and related design disciplines. Our collections are housed in the historic Battle Hall which served as the university’s first dedicated library building from 1911-1936.

The Architecture & Planning Library is a learning lab for multi-disciplinary study of the built environment, providing hybrid collections of print and digital materials. While international in scope, the collections contain significant materials on the built environment in Texas, the Southwest United States, and Latin America.

The Architecture & Planning Library Special Collections contains over 20,000 volumes of rare, unique, and contextually significant publications. The special collections continue to develop through generous donations of the personal collections of architectural historians and architecture firms, as well as selective purchases.

The Alexander Architectural Archives is one of the largest architectural repositories in the country. The Alexander’s holdings reflect the work and scholarship of architects, landscape architects, planners, designers, preservationists, historians, professors, and businesses in the industry.

The Architecture & Planning Library and Alexander Architectural Archives are part of a network of information resources at UT, including the School of Architecture’s Visual Resources Collection and Materials Lab, the Briscoe Center for American History and the Harry Ransom Center, and the UT Libraries distinctive collections. The strength of our distinctive collections and significant opportunities for digital scholarship enable deep collaborations between the School of Architecture and the UT Libraries.
