TOP SONGS
Blitzen Trapper: “Furr” Live on MBE Blitzen Trapper performed a gorgeous session back in 2009 when they first visited MBE. They left behind a stand-out and timeless batch of songs, so we asked them to fill us in on one particular track that we loved, "Furr," and to tell us how it came about.
Helena Hauff: “No Qualms” Hailing from Hamburg, Germany, Helena Hauff is a well-known DJ specializing in stripped-down techno that's strictly analog. Her new album fulfills the task at hand, as she jams on her machines to create a powerful sound. Give a listen to "No Qualms."
Mitski: “Nobody” Mitski songs flow with confessional lyrics. Mitski says: "It's not like I'm a vessel. For this new record, I experimented in narrative and fiction." So even though it sounds like she's pouring her own heart out, her themes are easy to relate to, as you hear in "Nobody."
Marissa Nadler: “Blue Vapor” You've heard of "slow cooking." Well, singer/songwriter Marissa Nadler has been refining her "slow music" for years. "Blue Vapors" focuses on her elegant brand of folk music, balanced by Dum Dum Girls' founding member Kristen Kontrol's strumming & harmonies, as well as the steady beats by Hole drummer Patty Schemel.
Brett Dennen "Home Away From Home" Live on MBE KCRW favorite Brett Dennen is known for his breezy pop songs, but his newest batch of tunes mines the LA-based singer's personal life for inspiration. On a recent visit to MBE with his band, Dennen performed "Home Away from Home," and let us in on how the song came about.
serpentwithfeet “invoice” Avant-garde vocalist and performance artist, Josiah Wise, AKA serpentwithfeet, put out a stunning debut album earlier this summer. On "invoice," Wise evokes the wide-eyed curiosity of his childhood.
Ross From Friends “Project Cybersyn” British producer Ross From Friends, AKA Felix Clary Weatherall, hands over the release of his debut album to Brainfeeder, Flying Lotus' label, offering up an intricately-layered sonic palette. Careful with each & every sound, Weatherall taps into the influence his dad has had on his musical upbringing. We've been enjoying "Project Cybersyn," which has only just started its ascent up KCRW's Music Top 30 list.
LATEST KCRW SESSION
Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats released their excellent sophomore album Tearing at the Seams earlier this year and have been on the road ever since. Inspired by personal drama, but full of hope, the new songs come alive on stage. We share highlights from a set recorded at Apogee studio, with host Anne Litt.
