On April 25th, 2015, a 7.9 magnitude earthquake devastated Nepal, followed by another 7.3 magniture quake 2 weeks later.Nepal is now facing one of the largest crises of it’s history. The challenge is compounded by the realities of the country, which has recently emerged from a long period of conflict and political instability.
Days after the first earthquake struck Nepal, IsraAID deployed its emergency relief team to provide crucially needed supplies and services. IsraAID engaged in search and rescue, medical, and mental health and psycho-social services (MHPSS), and is now helping to move forward and strengthen the community. IsraAID currently has a variety of projects in Nepal focusing on it's specific community needs.

IsraAID and Nepal
Initial efforts focused on the immediate survival of those without access to food, clean water, or medical services. At the same time, IsraAID's ERT is performing needs assessments to focus efforts on long-term recovery via agriculture, fishery, and water infrastructure, as well as capacity-building in the field of psycho-social services (PSS) to increase coping mechanisms and resilience after tragic events such as this earthquake.

Disaster ResponseA ROOF FOR ALL
Providing safe and sturdy transitional shelters for thousands of displaced families who have lost their homes
IsraAID launched its "A Roof for All" program in 3 earthquake affected districts to provide safe and sturdy transitional shelter for thousands of displaced families who have lost their homes.
Goals
- Provide sturdy, safe housing to as many people as possible
- Teach the citizens in the communities effected how to build temporary shelters
- Provide the citizens with all the necessary tools, as well as learning what tools they have for longer sustainability to build shelters and housing
Achievements
- In the Lalitpur Districts we've built a "Town Shelter" community compound in which beside housing, clean drinking water, safe toilets, kitchen garden, solar electricity and study centre for children of the community were provided
- IsraAID Nepal was one of the first organizations to conduct Mason training certificated by Nepal government
- As a partner of the Shelter Cluster in Nepal, IsraAID's technical team are working alongside government agencies, and other INGOs to provide transitional housing solutions that are low cost and suitable for the conditions in Nepal
- IsraAID's "A Roof for All" program provided 660 houses to families in 5 districts
MEDICAL EMERGENCY RELIEF
Providing on-going support to clinics and hospitals, working hand-in-hand with Nepalese medical staff
IsraAID Medical team headed by epidemiologist expert Prof. Mick Elkan, was dispatched to Nepal within days after the earthquake to respond to the emerging needs, and assist the Nepalese government and international actors in the short, and long-term recovery plans. The medical team has worked in five main locations: Kathmandu (Bir Hospital), Sidhupalchowk (Dhap VDC), Gorkha (Uhiya VDC), Nuwakot (Khani Gaun) and Lalitpur (Karyabikayak Municipality) assisting with patient treatment and providing on-going support to clinics and hospitals, hand-in-hand with the Nepalese medical staff.
Goals
- Provide adequate medical, and health care to as many people as possible due to the earthquake devestation

THEATRE
Psycho Social Support Through Theatre
As a part of IsraAID's PSS program, IsraAID has an ongoing theatre project where 3 different groups of theatre artists have worked in Nuwakot, Sindhupalchowk, Gorkha, Kavre, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur districts. These groups have reached out to more than 23,000 people with Psychological First Aid, GBV and Psycho-Social Support to the communities.
Goals
- Create presentations to provide treatment in form of expression art, and art therapy to the people effected by the earthquake
- Create workshops to help the people of Nepal heal as well as move forward in other PSS issues that the citizens are facing
Achievements
- Conducted and organized training and workshops on PSS and Tools of Expressive Art to the psychologists and counselors
- Organized workshops to the youth volunteers and motivational speakers of WIN (We Inspire Nepal) on the PSS and tools of expressive art
- Conducted workshops on self-care
- Conducted two days workshop and provided tools of expressive art to the staffs and volunteers of a variety of different groups
- Designed the intensive program for long term PSS training
HoneyAID
Empowering women and providing income generating jobs through environmentally friendly beekeeping
IsraAID have initiated the "HoneyAID" project for women empowerment by beekeeping. In this program, groups of women from villages affected by the earthquake will receive beekeeping training and support, 3 beehives of local bees, by using environmental friendly methods, and a support centre that will be the packaging and marketing centre and will manufacture and colonialize more beehives.
The women will form a agro enterprise cooperative and will invest some of the profit back in the community (as in auxiliary training, scholarships for girls).
Goals
- Empowering woman that make up more than half the population and are discriminated against
- Provide income building livelihoods for families in the villages effected by the earthquake
- Provide a long-term project aimed at a variety of different community needs
Achievements
- Trained the first 2 groups of a total of 69 women and provided beehives
- Renovated and established the sustainable "HoneyAID farm" which will support the project as it continues to grow
Disaster Response
Providing emergency relief after the devestating Nepal earthquake
Days after the first earthquake struck Nepal, IsraAID's emergency relief team arrived to provide crucially needed supplies and services. We engaged in search and rescue, emergency medical relief, and mental health and psycho-social support (MHPSS).
