When is iPhone 8 being released? What will the specs be? Will it have special features? Here's everything we know!
iPhone 7s — iPhone 8 — iPhone X — whatever Apple ends up calling the next and "tenth anniversary" iPhone, it's expected next fall, and with a new design and new set of features. But what will they be? This article is continuously updated to include the latest news and rumors. Bookmark it, save it, share it, and check back often!
Update: All of iPhone 8's OLED (organic light emitting diode) versions — the same type of display technology currently found on Apple Watch and Touch Bar displays — will be curved and made of plastic, according to The Korea Herald
"The OLED version of the new iPhone will all be curved as Apple ordered all plastic OLED -- not glass -- from Samsung Display. Samsung is capable of supplying a little less than 100 million units of curved OLED displays to Apple," a source familiar with the matter told The Korea Herald.
"The upcoming iPhone may use new sensing technology, which enables the phone to respond when users touch any side of the device. But, Apple may not adopt this technology," the source added, without elaborating further on details.
Keep reading for all the rumors!
What will the next iPhone be called?
If Apple sticks to the same pattern the company has been using since 2010, the 2016 iPhone 7 will be followed by the 2017 iPhone 7s.
- iPhone: 2007
- iPhone 3G: 2008
- iPhone 3GS: 2009
- iPhone 4: 2010
- iPhone 4s: 2011
- iPhone 5: 2012
- iPhone 5s: 2013
- iPhone 6: 2014
- iPhone 6s: 2015
- iPhone 7s: 2016
Any pattern can be broken, of course, and Apple can ultimately call any iPhone anything the company wants —iPhone Pro, Apple Phone, etc.
Because it's rumored to be an all new design, it's possible Apple will skip iPhone 7s and go straight to iPhone 8. Because it'll be 10 years since the first iPhone was introduced, Apple could also call it iPhone X.
For the sake of simplicity, iPhone 8 will be used here.
Will there be an iPhone 8 Plus?
There was an iPhone 6 and an iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.
- iPhone 6 Plus: 2014
- iPhone 6s Plus: 2015
- iPhone 7 Plus: 2016
So if Apple sticks to that pattern, there'll be an iPhone 8 and an iPhone 8 Plus as well. That lets Apple serve customers who want a phone with the 4.7-inch (or thereabouts) display size and customers who want a tiny tablet with the 5.5-inch (or thereabouts) display size.
When will the iPhone 8 be released?

Since the iPhone 5, Apple has announced every new iPhone during a special event held the first or second Tuesday or Wednesday of September.
- iPhone 5: September 12, 2012
- iPhone 5s: September 10, 2013
- iPhone 6: September 9, 2014
- iPhone 6s: September 9, 2015
- iPhone 7: September 7, 2016
Likewise, since the iPhone 5, Apple has shipped every new iPhone the second Friday following the event, with the exception of the iPhone 6s in 2015, which shipped the third Friday following the event:
- iPhone 5: September 21, 2012
- iPhone 5S: September 20, 2013
- iPhone 6: September 19, 2014
- iPhone 6s: September 25, 2015
- iPhone 7: September 16, 2016
Past patterns are the best indicator of future events, but they aren't perfect. Apple can and will throw curveballs whenever the company's logistics or strategy demands. So, be aware of the dates but don't be bound to them.
What can we expect in the iPhone 8 design?

Update: According to KGI's Ming-Chi Kuo (via 9to5Mac), the iPhone 8 will be about the same size as the 4.7-inch iPhone 7, though the display is still expected to be somewhere in the 5.5-inch range. Additionally, Kuo claims that the iPhone 8 will feature a significantly larger battery than the iPhone 7.
At any given point in time, Apple is working several years ahead on the iPhone line. Upcoming models may already be in the testing or prototype stages while future models may be little more than components attached to boards. Sometimes multiple versions will also exist, some more conservative, others more audacious. What eventually ships depends on what can reliably be produced given the limits of technology and economics.
Since 2008 Apple has also followed a "tick-tock" cycle for iPhones. On the "tick" year the company unveils a new design and on the "tock" year the company takes that same design to its limits. In 2016, though, Apple broke from that pattern and released a second tock — iPhone 7.
- iPhone 3G: 2008 — Plastic shell.
- iPhone 4: 2010 — Antenna band and glass back.
- iPhone 5: 2012 — 16:9 aspect ratio, chamfered edges.
- iPhone 6: 2014 — Bigger screens, rounded edges.
Rumor has it the next big iPhone redesign will be more dramatic one, with less bezel around the sides and at the top and bottom and virtualized buttons. Other reports also say that the iPhone 8 will feature a glass front and back, with either aluminum or stainless steel around the edges of the phone. Stainless steel is said to be reserved for the more expensive models
What colors will the iPhone 8 be offered in?
Update: Macotakara claims that Apple will reveal a new red color option for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in March. It's likely that this option would also be available for Apple's 2017 iPhone lineup, expected to launch later this year.
So far Apple has saved the new iPhone finishes for the years absent big redesigns.
- iPhone 5s: 2013 — Gold.
- iPhone 6s: 2015 — Rose gold.
- iPhone 7: 2016 — Black and jet black.
Again, Apple can do anything the company wants, any time the company wants, including introducing new colors with new designs.
What specs will the iPhone 8 have?
Update: According to a report from Digitimes, the iPhone 8 will feature a new, Apple-built fingerprint sensor, rather than a sensor with technology licensed from Synaptics or Qualcomm. Because of this sensor, the report claims, production may not start until September, later than in previous years.
Since Apple introduced the company's first branded system-on-a-chip (SoC) in 2010, every new iPhone has come with a new A-series chipset. If Apple sticks to that pattern, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus will ship with Apple A11 processors. New SoC typically take advantage of better processes that let them be faster and more powerful but also more energy efficient.
Apple has also been adding coprocessors to handle motion voice activation, and now big.LITTLE fusion. A11 could further build on those capabilities as well, including implementing artificial intelligence and machine learning at the silicon level.
The custom CPUs Apple has been producing have gone from Swift to Cyclone to Typhoon to Twister, so... Tropical Storm next? Hurricane? Rumors also persist that Apple is working on custom GPUs and even modems as well, which would allow the company to take full control of everything from graphics to radios. Recent reports indicate that Intel will be supplying at least some of the modems for this year's iPhone lineup.
What about an iPad Pro-style Smart Connector?

Apple typically introduces a technology in one device and then rolls it out across the lineup. Retina was like that with iPhone 4 and Touch ID with iPhone 5s. The Smart Connector, which debuted with the iPad Pro in the fall of 2015, attaches via a magnet and runs power, data, and ground directly from the device. It currently powers Apple's Smart Keyboard and a similar keyboard from Logitech, with more expected to follow.
Apple could certainly engineer a Smart Connector for iPhone 8, but what it would be used for is a more interesting question. Apple made a smaller Smart Keyboard for the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, but would the company make an even smaller one for iPhone 8 Plus? For iPhone 8 standard?
If not a keyboard, then what else would benefit from a not-Lightning, non-Bluetooth connection on an iPhone 8-sized device? A speaker pack? A much better camera system? Would Apple enter the modular phone business?
What about the display? More HDs? True Tones?
Update: According to a new report from Digitimes, Apple will use 5.8-inch AMOLED display panels provided by Samsung for an iPhone model in 2017, while two other models will utilize 4.7 and 5.5-inch LCD panels.
Apple hasn't updated the resolution on iPhone or iPhone Plus since 2014. It makes them less than desirable for application like VR, and less than competitive when it comes to spec comparisons. It does make them more energy efficient, though, given they still use LCD rather than OLED panels.
There have been rumors that we could see a bump to 1920 x 1080 for the 4.7-inch model and 2560 x 1440 for the 5.5-inch model.
There have also been rumors about OLED, but right now the LED component of the LCD system is used to implement the pressure-sensitive 3D Touch system, so would Apple re-engineer that? Or would they simply skip ahead again to something like quantum dot?
According to The Korea Herald, any and all OLED versions will be curved and made of plastic, rather than the glass typically used on flat panels.
Also, while iPhone 7 got the DCI-P3 wide gamut color system of the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, it didn't get the True Tone system. True Tone employs two ambient light sensors, with four channels each, to measure the color temperate of the surrounding area and then match the display to that temperature.
If you've ever seen a picture of an iPhone or iPad where the case looks white but the screen looks yellow or blue, that's what True Tone fixes. And once you get used to it, you want it everywhere.
Again, Apple typically pilots a new technology in a new device, but eventually rolls it out across the line. Here's hoping the same holds true with True Tone and we get the incredible calibration and dynamic compensation on iPhone 8 as well.
Will the iPhone 8 be waterproof?

Update: A new report from The Korea Herald claims that the iPhone 8 will feature an IP68 rating for dust and waterproofing.
iPhone 7 is water resistant but not water proof. Rated IP67, it can survive accidental splashes, dunks, and floods, but isn't rated as highly as some competing phones from Samsung and others.
Although swimming with an iPhone may not be on everyone's wish-list, those whose jobs or pastimes expose them to the elements, and even those who want to do underwater photography at shallow depths would be thrilled by IP68.
Will the iPhone 8 have wireless charging?

Update: A research note from KGI's Ming-Chi Kuo (via 9to5Mac) claims that all three of this year's rumored iPhones will feature wireless charging. The iPhone 8 will also apparently have a thin sheet of graphite to protect its new 3D Touch sensor from the heat generated by wireless charging.
Up until mid-2015, it hadn't been possible to do wireless charging—also known as inductive charging—on a phone with a metal back. Since Apple switched from the glass of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s to the aluminum of the iPhone 5 and later models, that effectively meant the company couldn't offer wireless charging as well.
Now methods for induction through metal are being introduced, which means it's possible Apple could keep the aluminum back and offer wireless charging.
Recent rumors have also suggested Apple is working on resonant inductive coupling, which would let devices charge even at a distance. (The greater the distance, the lower the efficiency.) Such technology is likely a year or more away, though.
Ceramics, though, right?
Apple Watch Series 2 being released in white ceramics sent the internet atwitter with thoughts of iPhone 8 being made out of the same material. Tougher than stainless steel, it still remains to be seen if it would hold up in a device as big as an iPhone or iPhone Plus.
Okay, what do we know for sure?
Only that nothing is confirmed until an Apple executive holds an iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus up on stage!

iPhone 8 rumor roundup: What you need to know right now!
Who's ******
my dad in-law got a nearly new yellow Chevrolet Express Cargo Diesel by working parttime online from home... original site
+_+_+_+_+_ http://www.moneytime10.com
I don't want the home button removed. I love a tactile home button, and will forever. Lots of benefits, no drawbacks.
Instead, shrink the top and side bezels. It doesn't have to be perfectly symmetrical, the bottom bezel can be bigger than the top! Nothing on a Macbook is pefectly symetrical vertically, because it doesn't make sense to do that. So why can't that same logic apply to the iPhone? Do what makes sense. The right tool for the right job. So on and so forth....
What I really want from the new iPhone is that the smaller one also have dual cameras with portrait mode, and make them less slippery. I'd love to go caseless, but this is so scary given how slippery the phone is. Would love to see some sort of new innovation in material usage on a future iPhone that makes it be both premium and pretty, and strong, AND not super slippery. At least the sides, perhaps give some texture to the surface if nothing else. Some flush rubberized inlays?
Everything else is just fluff...
Is it true that they want to integrate the TouchID to the screen removing the home button?
This got me thinking, so if the Display is replaced due to damage, will it lose the TouchID functionality?
Since for now, if you replace the Home button with fingerprint sensor on an actual iPhone, you lose TouchID functionality.
*sigh*
I also hope Apple keeps Home Button with Fingerprint sensor.
Fake news abound. And who said it will be called iPhone 8?
Ok soooo no USB-c ? Ok I'm good with that since I have about a million lighting cables !!!!

Click Bait......................
After reading Rene's piece from last month, "Why doesn't the iPhone use USB-C instead of Lightning?" (http://imore.com/why-doesnt-iphone-use-usb-c-instead-lightning), I'm eagerly anticipating his explanation on Apple's alleged decision to switch to USB-C on this year's iPhone.
What has changed since last year to overcome 1) larger footprint, 2) lack of flexibility, and 3) unavoidable customer anger over replacing Lightning after only 5 years?
If in fact nothing has changed and Apple merely decided to postpone the switch by one year, this begs the question of why they sent out misleading signals to manufacturers who scrambled to design and release Lightning headphones just last year?
There is zero chance the iPhone this year will have USB-C. The rumor mill says all sorts of stupid things, like a it will have a curved screen. What a joke.
That rumor was mis interpreted, IMO. The cable will have a USB-C end but that won't be the end that plugs into the phone.
USB-C Connector? What would that mean to the Lightning headphone jack implementation? I know it's just a rumour, but I'm curious.
It would mean that it would be a USB-C headphone jack implementation like it should've been in the first place
People downvoting don't know what technology standards are
That horribly written WSJ article screwed up the facts. Not surprising considering a) that publication's long track record of clueless Apple bashing and b) their general demise since being acquired by Rupert Murdoch.
Ming-Chi Kuo:
"New 2H17 models may all support fast charging. We believe all three new iPhones launching in 2H17 will support fast charging by the adoption of Type-C Power Delivery technology (while still retaining the Lightning port).."
This is really setting yourself for disappointment. It's actually **** journalism.
I had a dream last night that the new iPhone 8 was all glass with all the electronics embedded inside the slab. Not realistic, but anyway...
I'm just worried Apple might literally stick to the historic cycle and actually release an iPhone 7S and 7S Plus with no new design at all. I hope I'm wrong, and being a pessimist I love being wrong and always want to be wrong. But all rumors aside, there's zero reason to believe they will do anything other than this right now. They consider the iPhone 7 a "new design" so adding an S and keeping it wouldn't be beyond the pail. This worries me not for myself since I can gladly wait 2 years since I'm on the 7 now, but the interwebs and social media will explode and Apple will be doomed once again and I hate to see that as a fan of Apple.
There isn't zero reason actually, this year is the 10 year anniversary of the iPhone, so it's quite possible Apple will want to do something big this year
stupid apple fanboi's

Aside from the major use of foul language... this guy is really funny. He also has a point! One might note that one of the biggest selling phones in Japan is the Samsung Android (old style) Flip Phone... and now Nokia comes out with a new updated candy bar phone. And, TCL (Blackberry) with a new physical keyboard phone that might actually get the Blackberry name back in the game. What is old is new again... but what is new is not always better. I think Apple needs to rethink some of the tech being put into these phones. Do we really need edge-to-edge glass screens? Sony... do we really need a 4K screen on a phone? Maybe on a tablet... but on a phone?
I'm not sure Apple can really do better than the iPhone 6s or 7... they are great phones and I absolutely love my 7. Do I really need more than that phone offers??? I think not.
To clarify, the OLED *display* is plastic, not the *screen* on top of it, which should be Gorilla 4 or 5 glass. The reason the display is plastic is because of the physical curvature (according to Samsung and LG, the technology's not there yet to reliably make curved displays from glass).
I doubt Apple will ever go plastic -- it's more resistant to shattering than glass yet orders of magnitude more likely to scratch. It's the reason Jobs contacted Corning while the original iPhone was being tested, because he wanted something that wouldn't scratch (easily).
Never know...They could have a new plastic developed that is super scratch reisistant, as well as shatter resistant. As for the rest, 3d front facing camera for windows hello capability unlocking...
Doubt it. Plus plastic feels cheap.
well, for one, my nokia 1020 never felt cheap. 2. I am sure if they DO use plastic, it will feel just as premium as glass. This is apple, if nothing else, their devices feel and look premium.
I'm concerned about the rumours that iPhone 8 will use wireless charging. Does this mean I'm going to have to have a wireless charging pad in my car, one in my house, another at work and another in my back pack just in case I forget one? A cable is easy and can be bought anywhere. A proprietary Apple charging pad for the phone will likely be as expensive as the one for the watch i.e. $35 canadian or more.
More dongles????
No one said anything about it using ONLY wireless charging. It will most likely still have a lightning port so you should not worry about not being able to charge with a cable just yet.
They will still have the lightning cord connection available
I wonder whether it *will* have the Lighting port, though? Apple's existing technologies include wireless charging, Raise-to-Wake, water-expelling speakers, Apple SIM and a dearth of user-replaceable parts. If curved OLED edges allow Apple to replace the hardware buttons with software ones, I wonder if they would combine this with the rumoured new TouchID and their existing technologies to go so far as removing *all* buttons and ports from the OLED iPhone... It would certainly be one way to achieve an IP68 rating, and would appeal to Jony Ive I think. A phone aesthetic with no disruption to the surface other than a speaker grill is probably his end-game.
If they did do this, hopefully the wireless charger would include the capability to somehow force a hardware reboot.
I don't think this is very likely, but I can see how it could all line up. And yes - right now people need to plug a Lightning cable in to charge it, so many users have several cables but *most* have just the one that came with their phone. To many users, I don't think it would feel very different to plug in a wireless charging pad to the end of the Lightning cable. Apple would include one in the box, sell extras for USD$79 ea unless the uproar was too bad in which case reduce it to USD$65 for a limited time only...
I seriously doubt Apple will come out with a Samsung-style charging pad. If Apple goes with inductive (not truly wireless) charging, it will probably be a more elegant solution, like they did with the Watch.
Did you also hear they want to charge over a grand for this iPhone?, No Thanks that's way too high, Apple has lost their way with the pricing, they are always behind the competition and have the balls to charge higher prices, this is getting old I am going to check out the SAMSUNG Galaxy S8 when it comes out and say goodbye to iPhone, I still love iPad and the Macs are getting way overpriced, when the time comes I am going back to PC's, Samsung and Sony will get my attention and also LG, sorry Apple you charge way too much for two year old tech behind SAMSUNG and the rest, bring down prices and maybe I will stay, there are too many iSheep out there overspending and Apple gets away with it, DON'T BUY THEIR STUFF and they will have no choice but to bring down prices where it's reasonable, No More iSheep.
How are they behind the competition? I agree the prices are too much, but still they're fantastic products. Good luck going to Android and Windows, both have weird issues with crashing and whatnot. I can see you trying these products and then coming back to Apple
Behind and overpriced? Sounds like fake news to me. Last I checked, Samsung Galaxy phones cost about the same as iPhones and are FAR slower in nearly all performance benchmarks. So in what way are iPhones and Apple "behind the competition" specifically? Please list the actual technical details of what's behind the competition, besides resolutions (which most people can't see the difference anyway). You sound like a SamSheep.

Angry rant:
Why do people expect the moon every year? It's not possible, by anyone, until some major new technological advances are made outside of consumer gadgets (like some university discovers X and it trickles into the market). So each year, we get a new phone, with great, but not earth shattering updates. This is true of every smartphone maker! They have to release each year due to competition, so the updates can't be that huge. That doesn't mean everyone has to buy it and complain it didn't blow their minds from last year. I don't see any massive earth shattering revelations in any other industry every year, but gadget people are so spoiled, such $hitty rotten entitled babies, they expect nothing less than mind blowing re-imaginings of every device every single year as if it was possible from people working 50-60 hour weeks to make this happen. For some reason, I don't see this in any other industry. No one is making statements like "new Ford Mustang, same internal combustion 4 wheeled vehicle as the old Mustang".
If someone is fiscally smart, they'll wait 2-3 years before upgrading and then the new iPhone WILL surprise them. But like anything else, if you buy a new TV every year or a new car every year, of the same model, you won't be impressed. So I'm complaining about this attitude because I don't understand where it comes from. I do get a new iPhone every year because I'm silly like that, but I'm not a dumb enough to expect it to melt my brain. I enjoy the minor updates and appreciate it because I couldn't do any better and I'm not helping to make it any better. And if it really doesn't change much at all, then I'll wait another year. Making things is very hard people.
End rant
probably because Apple makes out like they have achieved the moon...EVERY year! Apple set the tone and while other companies have delivered big feature jumps year after year, Apple holds those features hostage and doles them out like crumbs to starving children.
That's utter nonsense. Every company acts like they've achieved the moon EVERY year. Samsung presentations are equally dramatic. They even once had a whole ridiculous play on stage! Or remember the time they made such a big deal about their new all glass and metal design as if that was something no one ever did? LOL
But there's so much bias that you only see that when it's Apple and ignore the over dramatic marketing when it's Samsung or others.
Hence the iSheep are born.
Hence the Samsung Sheep are commenting on Apple blogs.
"Why do people expect the moon every year?"
We don't. But the 6, 6s, and 7 all shared a similarly bland and uninspiring aesthetic design. Between never having loved the look in the first place and staring at essentially the same design for three years, we're all eager for something gorgeous like when they released the 4/4s.
Meet the new iPhone...same as the old iPhone

No way, I heard the new iPhone will come with a chocolate fountain and popcorn popper.
NO WAY DUKE....I'M IN! ha ha. In all seriousness...my 6s is AWESOME. it's going to take ALOT of new stuff in the 7s (6sss), 8, X....whatever they call it for me to get a new phone. The 6s works so **** well!
Mine crashes at 17% and it starts falling quickly when it hits the 70% mark
Have you tried calibrating the battery?
Meet the new Samsung Galaxy S8, same as the Galaxy S7.
You could apply this logic with any phone. They all get upgrades, they might not be mindblowing but they are upgrades. You don't have to buy it
Uber picky feedback here. I've learned to scan the article every time it is republished and look for the word "Update". The update on the jet white rumor has been marked as "update" for many revisions now. It would be great to stop highlighting that one. I'm just trying to not read the whole article over and over again.
Better yet, put all the updates at the beginning of the post. Then, integrate those updates into the proper sections in the body of the article when the next set of "updates" come out (which then become the new content at the top of the post). A ton of people in the comments seem to have a problem with this article being republished. I'm not one of them. I am interested in new iPhone rumors. I also understand the benefit to having one post with all the info instead of scattering all the updates into dozens of new posts. It would just be great if I could crack open the article and only have to read like the first paragraph. Just a thought...

The bubbles clinging to your illustration would indicates that the phone is getting waterlogged, what with all the bubbles clinging to the case like that.
Apple seems to be attached with the "PRO" moniker.

Ladies and gentlemen I introduce to you the iPhone Pro..😎 👍

IPhone Pro 🤓👍
There's no sense in Apple releasing the iPhone 8 with the iPhone 7s at the same time, the "iPhone Pro" will possibly have two versions the 5" and 5'8" thin bezel or no bezel, oled display,no home button, fast Charging, maybe wireless Charging and improve camera with augmented reality built into the software..🤔

I agree except that I'm really doubting Apple will release 2 versions of an "iPhone Pro," at least I hope not. This is my main problem with the iPad "Pro" at the moment as now you have 2 devices called pro.
Even if all of those rumored features are included on the new iPhone, that's still no reason to call it a pro version. Pro moniker is all about content creation. Besides selfies, no one will ever create any content on any smartphone because the screen is too small.
It will have most of those features but be called iPhone 10th Anniversary Edition and be priced around $2k.
Well here's to hoping that they can do something like what Samsung did with the Note7 with putting a larger screen into a smaller footprint. It would also be awesome if they could perfect the ceramic look of the Jet Black and Jet White or whatever they call it and release all colors
Looks like I'll be getting a Iphone in 2017😁

Me too.....OLED....BRING IT ON!
"The OLED version of the new iPhone will all be curved..."
Well this sucks. I don't like curved displays. I don't like the Samsung "Edge" devices. Why would Apple screw with a good thing?
I know how to do a lot on Android. I come from the platform and I do miss some features but every update would somehow mess up my phone. It's nice to have a battery last!! Brand new to Apple. Impressed

imore must have some slow days lately.
Wow there are a ton of typos in this article, and practically no information. It's just a bunch of lists of what Apple has done in the past, each followed by, "but Apple can do whatever they want, whenever they want." How is any of this helpful? The only remotely interesting thing in this is the rumor about curved plastic screens. Just write that, and leave out the typo-laden lists of things everyone already knows.
Keemstar? is that you?
I certainly hope they go ahead with a much smaller bezel. I haven't bought an iphone since the 3GS and I prefer the iphone software to Samsung's touchwiz+android but superior hardware and capabilities ultimately swayed me. But next phone could be an iphone again!
I'm glad I decided against the iPhone 7. I think my 6 can hang on for another year.
Are you just changing the title to this same article all the time? How about we just clean it up and get some new Intell in here.
Ok, We talking about the "next" iPhone, or the "next" iPhone after the next one. Because judgeing by apples release pattern the iPhone 7s is coming this year. which would be the iPhone 6sss. Or are they develop an all new interior/exterior phone for the NEXT phone?
Haha yep. Really bad reporting. Look at this section -
Will the iPhone 7 be waterproof?
iPhone 7 is water resistant but not water proof....
lol.. the quality of content sure has gone down here. Sad.
It's fake news here lol!
While this looks, and sleek, even more now everyone would be pushed to using Bluetooth earphoe/pods or buds
For me anyway, i got tiny hands, and even 5.5-inch look big.
But if Apple does do the smart connector (small version) for the iPhone 8 (or whatever), then be prepared to updated charging stands, or perhaps Apple will bring out another adapter (smart connector-to-lighening) attachment
"For me anyway, i got tiny hands"
I didn't know the Donald frequented iMore comment threads, lol.
"The upcoming iPhone may use new sensing technology, which enables the phone to respond when users touch any side of the device. But, Apple may not adopt this technology," the source added, without elaborating further on details.
This makes no sense.

It may or may not use that technology
It also may or may not have wings and its own dedicated entrance music.

according to reports, it recharges its own battery, without solar, wires, or wireless charging, connects to every device and has every port needed, all in one usb port...oh wait....not on the iPhone, lightning port. Oh wait, it will also be waterproof to 1000 fathoms, but it will leak in your bathtub.
Plastic: Nope
If it's plastic the final layer will be glass.
Sent from the iMore App
Plastic would make me sad.
Why James? if they (apple), and I am sure they will, will have a type of plastic that feels just like glass but would be much much more impact resistant. I think its a long time coming. I am in the lineup for the new apple phone coming next year! My contract is up then!
plastic it is....I am guessing that they have some new mix that is super resilient to scratching and cracking.....
Impact resistance is not the end all be all for smartphone screen covers. We've had impact resistant plastics for ages, but they're not very scratch resistant and they don't have the clarity (refraction index) or quality feel of glass.
There's too much thinking in this article. Frankly, some of the things mentioned are obvious and don't need the speculation, or dissatisfaction.
So, I'm reading- "plastic", as though that's a bad thing that Apple would never do. There's an obvious misunderstanding of what's going on. Yes, the display can be plastic. And LCD displays would also be made of plastic, if they could be, but they can't.
That doesn't mean that the cover for the display will be plastic. It will be glass, as always.
Of course, OLED is capable of DCI-P3. True Tone was left out because of the lack of room for the extra light sensors. Will they make it into a new phone? If space allows.
Pressure sensitivity? Sure, there's nothing about OLED that would prevent the same system from working.
The US government doesn't allow the use of the term "waterproof" in most products. There's really no such thing. Even diving watches designed for 5,000 meters are called water resistant to that pressure.
A water resistant phone to Apple Watch standards of 50 meters would be hard to do. Is it worth it? Not really. If it went to 5 meters, that would be great, but still no warrantee for water ingress. That's because few things are "waterproof".
OLED 😕
Sent from the iMore App
OLED has many awesome advantages including low power consumption, thinness, deeper blacks and vibrant colors. Hopefully they've ironed out the drawbacks which can include limited brightness, inaccurate skin tone reproduction, hyper sensitivity to moisture, and poor long term durability.
They won't stop with these way too early rumor articles unless we stop reading and posting comments on them. With that said this is my last iPhone 7s, 8 , X or whatever article I read until at least July or August 2017.
I take all the OLED rumors with a grain of salt right now. It's 7S with LCD until the more solid rumors come along.
lol... IPhone Pro
No home button, entire screen would be Touch ID, lock/unlock. Wireless charging would be good, but not inductive charging... Either way Apple better keep the lightening port..
From my point of view: "inductive charging" is not wireless charging because u still rest if on something to charge... My definition of "true wireless" charging would be "a phone sitting next to you and the wireless transmitter is part of the physical plug type charger... yet your phone does not directly connect to anything at all. (a.k.a it doesn't even rest on any charging type pad)
Just release it on June 29, 2017. The first iPhone was released on June 29, 2007.
Say no to curved glass. (already done)
Say no to wireless charging. (who carries their wireless charger with them)
Say no to a plastic OLED screen. (you'll cry with all the scratches)
My car has a wireless charging area, and it's far less bothersome tossing my Galaxy S7 onto the charging pad than fiddling around with cables.
Posted via the iMore App
Wireless charging will be on the iPhone when it's truly wireless, not having to sit on a pad
Do some research before commenting. There wills till be glass on top of the plastic OLED panel.
Posted via the iMore App for Android
I'm with you on all those points!! No curved screens, that time has passed!!
I say that is 100% true and correct, Im a iPhone enthusiast,as in I have had every iPhone that Apple has ever produced from the 2G,3G,3GS,4,4S,5,5S,6, and as of the moment 6Plus, yes, I have had them all to that point, And I would have to totally agree with every statement in this comment, with the most geared toward the OLED plastic screen, there is nothing worse than a big gouge on your screen that can not be erased, every time you look at your $900 iPhone, so that being said, if Apple does go with the plastic screens....., I for one will NOT purchase, the next model, whatever the call it
I'll take a wait and see approach. Always hoping for a better phone, just bring it.
Plastic? Um, no... If that happens, I'll either hang onto my 6s or get a 7 next year. I'm done with plastic phones. The only ones that I found to be of any quality were the Nokia Lumia 920 series.
The screen will be made of plastic. Not the entire iPhone. The casing is rumoured to be made of glass
I'd like to see going back to a all plastic phone..... cheaper, and unlike now, it won't shatter.
The OLED panel itself is plastic allowing the display set up to be thinner then the same configuration in glass. There will still be Gorilla Glass on top. Don't worry your pretty little head about it.

so basically apple is making a galaxy phone
not really, the Galaxy Note 7 was recalled :)... lets hope the next iphone isn't
u are wrong, the note 7 was recalled not the s7
Actually, you are wrong. The phone is officially called the "Galaxy Note 7". The Galaxy series covers way more than just the "S_" phones.
iPhone 7 and 8 rumour articles appear to have been merged.

Haha yeah. It's just stuff we wish Apple would implement already

I downloaded ANTUTU app, it says iPhone is the best.
What a copy/paste article, does any one proof read it?
It should, because if has lot's of bugs.
Pablo Sormi , why dont you give an example ? ..of the bugs.
Most people found the summary of the rumors from 'Ming-Chi Kuo' quite helpful.
I really liked the roundup, thanks Rene.
They say the 2016 iphone was called the "7s"
"Bugs"? I'm pretty sure that's not the right way to use that term...
Funny you complain about the lack of proofreading in this article when you write "lot's." That means "belong to lot." You're looking for "lots," no apostrophe. Moral of the story? If you're going to nitpick on someone's writing mistakes, at least write up a grammatically and punctually correct comment/complaint.
"Apple will offer a new model with a 5-inch display, in addition to 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models." This seems weird. 3 different sizes? I know the SE did the same, but offering a 4" model made more sense than adding a 5" and keeping the 4.7". My guess is is something more like a 5" screen in a chassis roughly the same size as the current 4.7", made possible by the smaller bezels.
TL;DR: Proooobably glass and poooossibly wireless charging. Double spaced.
Whatever transpires you will need a dongle for the dongle. Soo much 'courage' everywhere!
You should probably take note of your profile image
The iMore app has not worked for over a week..... now rehashing articles?...Honestly, time to move to a better site.
They've always rehashed articles (why reinvent the wheel?), and the app has always been terrible. The website itself works fine though, but yes the app really needs looking at
iMore's been doing that for awhile... Nothing new to see here.
If the iPhone eight (i mean 8) didn't have any bezels at all (the kind of edge to egde type images we've all seen" that itself would be an improvement.. The technology is available, just Apple for some also hold back..
e.g If can do Touch ID on a home button there the tech is there... u can do it behind the screen, but I wonder weather just is saying they don't do it, when in reality they are working on it at the moment, just choose not to tell anyone.
Sometimes u gotta think whats really happening.
Edge to edge will result in accidental touch presses. Maybe the bevel can be reduced but that's up to Apple to decide. I've used phones where the screen goes almost to the edge of the phone, and it's very easy to accidentally register touch presses
This. I hate the idea of no bezels. Makes using a case much less practical, and like you said, opens you up to accidental touches.
It worked fine for the Note 7 and s7 Edge
I agree. The curved screen is impressive and does not cause touch issues and works perfectly in a case.
I trust Apple will not include exploding batteries.
No bezels would be a failure, if you ask me. It would make it a lot easier to break the screen.
It will not increase screen break incidents. Screens braking is carelessness and in the case of a true accident bad luck in terms of how the phone lands and what it lands on. If you have a case it will still just depend on the level of protection and if that protection even comes into play during the incident. I bang my watches on metal, brick, etc. far more than my phone and there is no break. My car takes rocks to the glass at 80MPH and again it is all luck and angles.
For those that are worried about touch issues, software can adjust for the edges if need be but in current phones with smaller bezels than the current iPhone this hasn't been needed.
Since it is the 10 year anniversary of the iPhone they need to call it iPhone X
Oooooh. :)
Would the next model be Xs or Y......or XI.........etc. Not sure I like this?
uhh, no. It can be named something entirely different, or it can be a limited edition product as far we know. Doesn't mean the following gen will be called Y or XI. It can be called 8/9 Pro or 8/9x for all we know.
Lazy journalism rehashing the same article. Could at least change it to say "Will the iPhone 8 be waterproof instead of iPhone 7 like it currently says....
All I want is wireless charging. I still have my palm pre and nokia lumia charging stands.
I want true wireless charging, not "my phone has to be stuck to a stand" charging
I have had the pleasure of wireless charging with my Lumia and it is much more pleasant to use than sticking cables into a phone.
There is a pleasure in placing your phone on a pad to charge and just pick it up to go.
What about if you want to use your phone whilst it's charging?
You always have the option to plug in the usb lead too :)
Similar issues as if I want to charge my 7 Plus and listen to wired headphones I guess. Wireless charging is not a perfect technology, but it can be very convenient. Wireless charging pads in coffee shops, cars and such mean I don't have to find a table with a plug or have wires dangling about. It also allows for battery packs such as the Galaxy S7 one which charge wirelessly rather than plugging a pass through adaptor like on the Apple Smart battery case.
The technology will improve and I imagine Apple will adopt it once the range has improved. But for now it's a feature that I have on my Galaxy s7E (and has been on every second phone I've had since a Lumia 920) that I wish was also on my iPhone.
I hope the wireless charging rumored to be in testing isn't proprietary, but utilizes either or both of the current standards (Qi/PMA).
Unfortunately you know apple. It will most likely be proprietary
A ceramic iPhone would be nice, but can you imagine how pricey that would be? It would look drop dead gorgeous though.
I really doubt that Apple would produce a phone with a ceramic back. Ceramic is super tough, which makes it scratch resistant, but the down-side is that it is vulnerable to shattering.
You can get way with that for a watch, as most of the time it's strapped to your wrist. But a phone is very vulnerable to dropping and if you dropped a ceramic phone on a hard surface I think the case would be highly likely to shatter.
It's also fairly heavy.
That's not how modern industrial ceramics work. Zirconia and many other things are added so it is very different than the dinner plates you're thinking of. A ceramic watch has to handle a lot of direct impacts because people swing their arms against objects all the time. It's not a problem. Police and the military use ceramic plates in their ballistic armor. They have solved the shattering problem with new processes and chemical additives. The question is can the cost and difficulty in manufacturing feasibly and cost effectively produce hundreds of millions of phone cases a year. Apple has great material scientists and they have been learning with the watch, so I wouldn't rule a ceramic phone out. With it's great luxury feel, scratch resistance, color choices, etc., I am sure Jony Ive is working hard on it.
I think this is just a little too early

This article has been around for years, it's just updated each year on the release of the iPhone to guess what the next iPhone may or may not have
I mean it's an apple blog site so they have to find something to talk about while we all wait for September each year
Come on, already talking iphone 8? We all know that Apple is addicted to releasing their phones in September, so I find this article irrelevant.
Isaiah Heart.
I prefer consistent rather than addicted…
Hmmm a new 5" model right in the middle? I'd be all over that. I like the bigger screen of my last two plus models over the standard 4.7, but I came in from a 5.2" Moto X last year. I thought that was actually a good size, but didn't want to lose .5" and go down to the 4.7" in the same physical sized body (ok the Moto was like 1-2mm wider). I think 5" would be the perfect spot unless the bezels get seriously reduced somehow.
I really doubt that there will be a 4.7, 5 and 5.5. The 4.7 and 5 are too close to each other. Apple likes product differentiation and these two seem like there is not enough differentiation. Apple is no Samsung with dozens of devices that directly complete against each other.
Some people view the 4.7" as too small, while the 5.5" as too big... 5" is right in the middle and would satisfy the middle ground.
Maybe they'll actually do 4, 5, and a 5.5 or 5.7 basically bumping the 4.7 a bit and bringing a new version of the SE size.
Yeah, I've been saying that would be a good idea for awhile. Have three sizes, a mini, a normal and a plus. Release them all together and use the same chips. Cameras can be different, but the core specs should be on par. That would appeal to those who like small and large phones. True, there will be people who would prefer a slightly larger/smaller size than those released, but you would still be able to appeal to the vast majority of customers.
Yeah I doubt they would do that as well unless they did something like 4.7 is the standard features with 1920x1080, 5.5 is the Plus with extra camera stuff or something and 2560x1440 , and then say a 5. with the extra camera features or whatever is extra of the Plus except still at 1920x1080. It would still be surprising to see two screens that close though. I think if they're going to do 3 phones with one of them being a 5" that the other two will be slightly larger and smaller than the current two sizes to create more of a difference.
How do their devices "compete against each other" Totally different markets and uses.
I have been hoping for a 5" to 5.2" iPhone for a long time. I think that is the sweet spot for a Smart Phone. It would make sense to just do the 5 or 5.1"" and 5.5" then keep selling the iphone 7 for a year in 4.7" before dropping it when the following year's phones come out.
AppleInsider denies the rumor, and says they will stick to 4,7" and 5.5".
Anyway, I don't see any problem in Apple replacing the 4,7 with a 5" model if, as rumored, is all screen and no bezel. Think that a 4,7" screen is a bit wider than an iPhone SE, but shorter in height. So a 4.7" model without any bezel would be smaller than an iPhone SE model right now, and a 5" would be very similar in size to the SE, a little wider but not taller.
I'd love to see an app drawer as an option, but that's a software thing.
I'd like to see screens at 5 and 5.5 with a 5.7 or better pro model. The 4.7 7 will be the next "SE" model.
I'm all for removing the button altogether and just having a circle on the glass.
Apple needs screens that are the equivalent of gorilla glass 5.
I LIKE the aluminum body! I really don't want to go back to glass.
My upgrade comes dead between the two models, and I am seriously considering android for the first time in years. I have nougat on my work Pixel C and it works wonderfully, so I can use both systems. But the odds are still pretty good I'll get a 7 plus in black. Water resistant is extremely attractive to me and the Pixel phones don't appear to have it. Samsung has glass backs. Don't panic about sales. The iPhone is a really good product, and Apple has a lot of people like me using a 6 that still works great who aren't ready to rush out in September and buy early, but will upgrade over the next year.

I don't have a problem with Apple going OLED f ok r the iPhone 8 , but I just hope that Apple doesn't copy Samsung's Edge design of the S7 Edge and Note 7.

With the curved screen? That's not going to happen, it's a gimmick
Don't bet on it. It gives it the appearance of a larger size in a smaller package
That's called a gimmick
I have heard the saying many times don't feed the troll. In this case it is more like don't feed the author. The fact that the recently released iPhone 7 is only 2 weeks old is just one example of how much this article screams desperation in an attempt to get attention for a site that over the last year has been in a downward spiral. Sadly this site used to be on top of everything Apple and in most cases would be one of the first to break any news, now when it comes to the most up-to-date Apple news you are better off going anywhere else but here. The quality iMore of back in the day has been replaced with a constant barrage of Pokémon and stories that are nothing more than a disguise of an advertisement. I have given time to see if they can turn this catastrophe around but this article is the final proof that they are done for.
Sent from the iMore App
I've been using this site since it was TiPB, I don't see how anything's changed. Pokémon articles are there because Pokémon Go is popular, they've always had articles for popular apps. If you don't like it, go

For some of us underwhelmed by the iPhone 7, looking to the 8 makes good sense. Thanks, Rene.
i would be happy to see Wireless Charging & Bigger Battery.
I hope the iPhone 7 Plus at the bottom of the pile of iPhones is a loaner. Glass face down on uneven stone with a few pounds of pressure on it?
I never really liked the "wireless charging" on the Apple watch or other phones...
We call them "wireless" only because u don't stick a connector in at the bottom, but u still need to rest the phone on a pad anyway to charge, so there IS a physical connection still... That's always been my argument here.
Iphone 8 Plus = for sure we'll see this ...... If history has taken anything by golly.
Cant imagine an iphone being water proof up to 2 meters... we don't swim with our Apple watch do we ? (although that could be interesting to see happen as well)
I would of expected a smart watch to be the first things to be water tight, than a phone, but ...oh well... it happened in reverse.....
A wire will always have to be connected to something. Whatever device comes out will have to be plugged in
Where have you been? Of course we swim with our Apple Watch, particularly the series 2, which is rated as a swim watch to 50 meters.
Water resistant guys, not water proof. Water proof isn't allowed, and if it were, the warrantee would cover it. It does not. Even my Omega Oceanmaster 1,200 meter diving watch wasn't water proof. If water got in, I would have had to pay for repairs.

I've actually read that it's possible Apple could make 3 phones. One OLED one plus the other two. Reading this article doesn't give me much hope for an OLED screen next year though...Since according to this that whole Taptic engine is incorporated using the current screen.
You're killing my excitement, man. Either way, I'll start saving up for it at the beginning of next year and will get whatever Apple delivers. Crossing my fingers there's an OLED version with all the bells and whistles of the current one though.
This is stupid. Who wrote this utter crap? Oh...

1. Screen size ratio to height and width is a big deal to me. I want more screen per overall size. Smaller bezels will be appreciated. For a given device size, I want as much screen as possible. Apple is a bit behind here.
2. Processing and graphics power matters. The more Apple can continue to lead in this area, the more the iPhone can do. Processing power also means we users can get longer life out of our phones. I expect this from Apple, but it is worth saying. Is this an area where Apple can sustain their advantage?
3. I see Siri as a big part of the future for the iPhone. The more Apple can improve Siri -- hardware has to be important here -- the more we can all move beyond legacy input modes. This is one step to the future.
4. Battery life is huge. I don't know how companies like Apple will eventually break away from evolutionary battery improvements and OS efficiencies versus simply adding larger batteries, but this is a tech disruption waiting to happen. If Apple did one thing, and one thing only, they would further lead the pack instantly by improving battery life without simply adding a physically larger battery. This is a tall order.
Hopefully they slim down the unnecessarily large bezels.
Relax Rene....

After the lame update I believe apple redesign the whole iPhone. They did already? Maybe they forgot the screen. Because they did not do that I think the next iPhone 8 has a 5.1 and 5.7 inch screen and hopefully 2K
Everything has its charm, for me the iPhone 7 being so similar to the iPhone 6 means that I could buy a silver 7 and nobody could tell from certain distance if it is a 6, 6s or 7, making it less attractive to a burglary attempt. Don't try that trick with a 7 Plus or a Black or Jet Black 7, obviously.
No one cares what phone you are using, get a life.

If they do anything to the naming, I think they would just drop the numbering. So, iPhone and iPhone Plus.
It's a shame Rene is so underwhelmed and disappointed with the latest offerings that he feels the need to dream about its successor already. Anywho, I thought the latest iPhone was just the 7, with no S suffix?
Anyways, my personal wishlist would be a USB C port and smaller bezels, maybe with a full screen front with virtual home button (it's halfway there already after all).

Pretty sure Rene loves his iPhone 7, this article is just reposted every year to think about the iPhone ahead
So... you want an android?
Why not?
- Phone updates stop after approx. 2 years, as opposed to the 4 years you get with the iPhone
- Phone updates are sent out to phones at different times depending on the phone and the carrier, this results in version fragmentation and usually being quite behind on your version, opening up to security risks and other issues
- Bad memory management
- Carrier/Manufacturer bloatware
- Usually battery drains quicker due to poor app/OS optimization
- Wakelocks
Android does have a lot of benefits though, such as its customizability, and access to the file system. If you unlock the bootloader you can flash updates yourself to get them quicker, and root your phone to remove bloatware apps, but the average joe doesn't know how to do this.
And perhaps add the cancelation of phone models due to exploding batteries ;)
You mean like the latest iPhone explosion.
Posted via the iMore App for Android
LOL, yeah, that one of a few handful of phones. Cause batteries do sometimes explode in anything. But the difference is that Samsung Notes were banned since dozens were exploding and their replacements were also exploding. A few random anecdotes of an melon iPhone doesn't change reality. Why do you trolls bother even coming here? Cognitive dissonance I suppose, or lack of life.
Lightning is a better port in many ways, and you already have a bunch of lightning cables around. Why change it USB-C?
Smaller bezels for sure agree, and probably going to happen.
Virtual home button - I hope not. That just means you have to reserve a spot on the screen for a home button, how is that beneficial? The better idea would be that the entire bottom bezel be a non moving home button surface. Keep that virtual button BS off my iPhone screen please.
Latest rumor has it that the iCrap 8 will have USB-C.
