And so the series goes on - and slowly its becoming more and additive it. I will have to say that after the Lilith war the stories have become more compact and as such now are limited to a single book. This makes the book both quicker to read - after all everything that is going to happen, will happen, has to happen in these pages, it also to a lesser extent mean that the story is shorted and more compact.

Anyone who's gotten this far into the series knows that the stories are a little predictable. Green tends to repeat himself, not just from book to book, but even within books. If I read the line "He's the wrath of God on earth" again, I think I was gonna scream. And every time he uses his Gift and "then it was the easiest thing in the world..." my eye twitches a little.

I just finished reading Simon Green’s “Just Another Judgement Day”, the ninth installment in his highly-popular Nightside urban fantasy series. I completely enjoyed this novel, and found the storyline to be both compelling and highly-informative concerning the burgeoning new group of Nightside power brokers, referred to as the Authorities, who have replaced their former holders as the guiding management for the Nightside. I've read nine installments of this series so far, and I'll read the others. Like many books (Butcher's Dresden series, Hearne's Iron Druid series, and Kadrey's Sandman Slim series, to name just a few), these books are what I tend to call "Television Substitutes." They're enjoyable enough, and a slight notch above pulp fiction (usually), and, most of the time, I'd rather curl up with the dog and read something light than waste time in front of the TV. It's nice to see that Simon R. Green is getting less predictable in his writing, which has been the unfortunate drawback to his last few novels. Rather, he has taken a fresh step in the Nightside series, which bodes well for the future books.

I think the strongest aspect of the book was the slow shift away from the pre-Lilith war characters by writing them into the background of the story. His more memorable characters are still present, however, not recurrent and in the forefront as they were in ...more

What a great book! I couldn't wait to see how John Taylor would stop The Walking Man. And I loved that John wasn't all gung-ho, that he wanted to stop the guy without killing him, if possible. I also really liked the developing relationship between John and Suzie, loved seeing their home. But I didn't expect the twist with Walker at the very end, that made me rather sad because I love the guy, he's such an arrogant bastard. 4 stars because after a couple disappointing books this one finally grabbed my attention. Although I find the child abuse story line extremely upsetting (not just suzie's in this one- there's more. It's not in-the-moment description, just aftermath, but still horrifying of course) I did appreciate what that did for suzie's character.

Read every book in the Nightside series and you'll have read some ace-level sci-fi. Green's imagination is enviable and flat-out genius. His characters, concepts, lines . . . perfecto. He's a master of first-person sci-fi.

Take this book for example. Imagine the left hand of God came to town, with the purpose of inflicting Old-Testament-style wrath upon the Nightside, a town full of evils and vices. He's wreathed in God's might. He's indestructible. Cruel. Merciless.

I enjoyed this book but the series is beginning to feel repetitive. Big Bad comes to Nightside, John, Suzy and 1 or 2 other people take it on, people die. It's not that there's a total lack of forward momentum, there are changes in the Nightside. In this book we meet the new authorities, for example. But it still feels like the more things change the more they stay the same.

I did notice a few crossovers with the Shaman Bond series.

Loved it. Fast-paced, truly dark in many ways, and filled with debates over faith vs fanaticism, good vs evil, and the merits of all the levels in between.

Add to this all the changes going on in the Nightside and the series gets freshened up a bit.

These damn books are like potato chips.

Synopsis: In the ninth installment of the Nightside series, PI John Taylor must find a way to stop the Walking Man, God's righteous fury made flesh. Should be a piece of cake.

The idea is that London has a doppelganger; an evil twin where everyone goes to sin and be sinned, and all bets are off. People and things arrive from all kinds of places and times, and one of my favorite parts of reading and rereading are trying to spot the various mythologies and conceits Green weaves into this one coherent, strange city. The Street of Gods alone is enough to cause fits of mad cackling that scare the dogs.

Green also does minutely detailed setting and support on an unparalleled level. There's so much design gone into everything. This for example:

The [cab:] driver was human enough, from the waist up. From the waist down, his torso plugged directly in to the driver's seat. Cables, wires and tangles of translucent plastic tubing full of pulsing liquids connected him to the cab on both a physical and mental level. Basically, he was a cyborg,and the cab was an extension of his truncated body. He drove it with his thoughts, but he kept his hands on the wheel to reassure his passengers. He kept a bonsai pine tree on his dash-board to serve as an air-freshener.

And the cabbie's a throwaway character. He appears for maybe three pages and then is never seen or heard from again. But the image is delightfully indelible and detailed enough to bring the Nightside to glorious life.

PI John Taylor has saved the Nightside a half-dozen times and destroyed large chunks of it at least that many times. A rebel and a rogue, he answers only to Walker, the ultimate bureaucrat and the only person who can get a drop on the little bugger. When Walker asks Taylor to defend the Nightside from a new enemy--the aforementioned Walking Man--Taylor is intrigued only because Walker asks instead of instructs. From there, Taylor joins forces with a holy warrior from India in dogging the Walking Man's footsteps, trying to answer the ultimate riddle: in a place as dark as the Nightside, what will convince God's righteous wrath to kindly knock that off?

Nine books is a long time to keep a series going, and going well. For me, there's nothing like the Nightside. It's my favorite otherworld (not counting the Liquorverse), and the books are total comfort reads for me.

One of the Amazon reviewers of the tenth book (which has just come out in hardback and can you hear me slavering? I might be a little loud, my bad) referred to this one as "an interlude". It's true. There's so much going on in a short space of time in this book that the pace is a little breakneck, and certainly much zippier than previous incarnations. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. This is the ninth Nightside story from Simon R. Green, and if you don’t know what to expect by this point then you’ve had your eyes closed throughout the previous books. This is not a book for someone who’s never read any of the previous Nightside novels – you absolutely need to read them all first, otherwise much of this one will go over your head.

Simon has built a canon of characters in the Nightside and uses them in this story like a well played set of cards, moving them in and out of scenes as required. The Nightside itself and the locations within it are almost characters in their own right, and as the story moves from place to place it feels a little like going back home after a long time away.

This time, the Walking Man has come to the Nightside, to clean it up, kill the sinners and do God’s work. John Taylor finds himself up against impossible odds, making impossible choices and doing his usual self reflection. The pace is solid, with a short reminder about how deadly John and Suzie are in the opening chapter, followed by a single relentless methodical slog to the end. The prose is typical of Simon’s work, forming clear images of the world, bringing humour and originality, and additionally in this story, giving us a real sense of the dreadful nature of the Nightside’s darkest corners.

As with Butcher’s Dresden books and Carey’s Felix Castor series, there are several threads running through all the Nightside stories. The nature of the Nightside itself, the Terrible Future that John has seen, the role of Walker in John’s life and the protection of the Nightside, and the hint of other forces moving and driving towards some kind of goal. There is also the relationship between John and Suzie Shooter. Just Another Judgement Day does manage to drive some of those threads forward, and two of those threads give us the most engaging and moving parts of the book.

However, the main plot line and the overall delivery seem lazy. There are a few sections with repeated phrases, some long descriptions of characters we’ve already met (taking up three or four pages at a time, several times, in a story which is only 263 pages long), and there’s no real urgency or sense of danger.

Perhaps Simon has written himself into a corner, the threats that Taylor has vanquished in previous books are so monumental, that it’s hard to imagine what kind of impending doom would get his heart racing. If John isn’t scared, and we certainly don’t get any sense of that in this story, then why should we be?

The final confrontation is oddly muted, and what could have been an extremely powerful scene turned into almost a caricature.

Despite those flaws, Green’s writing makes it easy to read, and results in a harmless few hours of entertainment. One for the fans, almost like a short postcard about what John is up to in between Major Events, and could have benefited from being half as long and more tightly focussed. ...more

This is the 9th book in the Nightside series and one of the things I love about Simon Green's writing is he doesn't waste time with unnecessary set up, because to not be completely lost you need to have read the previous 8 books. John Taylor is asked by the new authorities to find a way to stop the Walking Man, who has come to destroy the Nightside and all its evil. This is a great villain for Taylor to face, because this case is about more than just not letting his client down, its about taking a moral stand. Taylor knows there is a lot of evil and horror in the Nightside, but it serves a purpose. It's a place for the monsters like him who have now where else to go where they'll really belong. I love that Green is still writing in that noir/throwback style. Its as much a part of Taylor's character (with the long white trench coat) as it is a part of author's style.

This is a wonderfully layered story with Walker's side plot as he has to face the consequences of his own choices. John has a new friend to fight along side, a holy warrior who wants to test his faith against the Walking Man while he also challenges John's ideas of faith and god. We also get an opportunity to peak into John and Suzie Shooter's home and relationship. This is the book where you see a happy ending on the horizon, or at least the Nightside's version of one. And they've earned a happy ending.

The Walking Man, instrument of God's wrath on Earth, has sent a polite letter to the editor of the Night Times, saying that he is coming to the Nightside to kill the guilty and stamp out evil. The new Authorities, who are also on the Walking Man's list, hire John Taylor and Shotgun Suzie to stop him fearing that he could destroy the Nightside, and they are joined by monster hunter Chandra Singh, a Sikh khalsa who wants to pit himself against another holy warrior.

Just Another Judgment Day is a return to form after the previous few books in the series, which had become quite repetitive and a little dull. And right at the end of the book, there are a couple of developments that could lead to big changes for Taylor, both personally and professionally. ...more

This book was a pleasure to read. Action that didnt stop, a good narrative voice that keeps the reader engaged through some of the most unusual settings and circumstances.Green gives descriptions but does not dress the characters and the scenes for you, he provides you with the general outline of the house and lets you pick the curtains. A talent that is a sorely missed in fiction and seriously under valued.

It seems that Simon R Green has actually run out of ideas for this novel as he is now recycling bad guys.

This novel deals briefly with the changes in the nightside and the new authorities. The title wraps up The Nightside in a nutshell. It's Doomsday? Again? That's the third time this month! If The Nightside series has a bad point, it is that there is always another crisis set to doom the world and everybody in it. I like that we see one of the more horrifying aspects of the Nightside in this novel. Taylor always talks about the darkness and being able to find any kind of sin, but it's never seemed so overtly evil until now. Finally, it's a little more like an earthside Mephistopolis and less like a paranormal fetish club. Too bad it didn't go deeper into the darkness, but if you heap too much into one book it'll lose its impact, so I can't fault it for that.

The weakest book in the series. Simon becomes a bit preachy and it the plot is really just another judgement day, like in the title. Another Biblical monster comes to take on the Nightside, John searches for an evil Artefact and in the end is goody goody and defeats him. Simon Richard Green is a British science fiction and fantasy-author. He holds a degree in Modern English and American Literature from the University of Leicester. His first publication was in 1979.

His Deathstalker series is partly a parody of the usual space-opera of the 1950s, told with sovereign disregard of the rules of probability, while being at the same time extremely bloodthirsty.
