It seems I'm going against the GR tide with Cold Blooded. (Again). I can't deny how good and competent Ms Carlson is as a writer, but Cold Blooded, just as the title implies, left me cold. There's not much in this series that appeals to me anymore.

The only book I really loved was the prequel Blooded. But my enjoyment of the series went down with this latest novel. In part because it seems a rinse and repeat of the previous. There's the same plot and the same (and I mean the same) cliff-ending 2.5

It seems I'm going against the GR tide with Cold Blooded. (Again). I can't deny how good and competent Ms Carlson is as a writer, but Cold Blooded, just as the title implies, left me cold. There's not much in this series that appeals to me anymore.

There's the same plot and the same (and I mean the same) cliff-ending. Which by the way was exactly the same of the first book. Soon, she's going to get no more loved ones...

As noted before, the book has a cartoonish quality to it. Jessica keeps getting stronger and her powers are of the super hero variety. I don't find this any better any longer I read it. And her reactions seemed off too. She does nothing to a deranged vampire that latches at her neck and almost dries her, but stops reasoning and attacks a demon giving him info and fuel.
I realize she irritates me as a character, mostly because I feel the heavy handed approach of the author, rather than fluid character development.

Same with the mate stuff. How easy is making mates, so you don't really have to explain how people fell in love...Here I found it even more discordant. Met once, mating (of the metaphysical kind) follows, go forcibly different ways. They found each other again. Mating of the physical kind ensue. But hey we are told they love each other. Uh?

Characters. Sorry, but they all blend in their blandness. There's really not much depth into them. Any of them. Nothing that can separate one from the other. Naomi is the servile one, Ray is the foul-mouthed etc.
During a pivotal point, where Jessica has the V Queen at her weakest, I realized how absurd the scene was. How cliché the vamps and their games. (Moreover you need cleverness to be devious. And I didn't see it. It seemed to me they were there because this is what you expect from Vamps.) I was thrown out of the story and really thought about stopping. That's how much I cared.

Plotwise, well, I can't really say much. There's the same plot all over the series. She's hated or coveted, she's running, running, running. She gets new powers/allies/enemies. Fights ensue. Someone dear gets kidnapped. End and your cue to buy the next book. Rinse and repeat. I'm sorry but even with all the action I was bored. ...more

With each new book, Amanda Carlson proves yet again that urban fantasy is far from being a dying genre. Her style and approach remind me of Kim Harrison, Patricia Briggs, Charlaine Harris, Jim Butcher and possibly Diana Rowland. I dare say she is in every way their equal.

If I were to do one of my UF recommendation lists (which I will, and soon), the Jessica McClain series would find its place at the top. It contains everything I love most about the genre, while avoiding all its weaknesses. Carlson is far from being predictable: paradoxically, her series has that same roughness and charm introduced by the above mentioned authors, but it manages to be fresh and unique at the same time.

Compared to the previous book, Cold Blooded is a little less structured, without a strong main plotline to clearly define it. It’s difficult to describe the plot in one sentence; instead, Jess and Rourke face challenge after challenge, enemy after enemy, and the game always changes. While it can be a bit disconcerting at times, it certainly makes for an exciting read. A main threat does become clear in the last fifty pages or so, and the battle will continue in the next book as well.

For her part, Jess has finally realized the full extent of her powers. Her blood is incredibly powerful, her wolf wise and mostly cooperative. In her father’s absence, she has been made Alpha of the small pack of wolves that remained with her, and she handles it extremely well. It helps that her mate is very old and very powerful, there to support her in every decision she makes.

The secondary characters make this series truly shine. From Hot Blooded to Cold Blooded, the vampire Naomi quickly became my favorite. She is entertaining and often even funny without meaning to be. There is some serious chemistry between her and Danny and I can’t wait to see how that will play out.

Like the previous two installments, Cold Blooded has what one might consider an open ending. Some things are resolved while others are left wide open. The entire series is one big adventure that I enjoy greatly, so I didn’t really mind, although I probably would under different circumstances. As it is, this series remains one of my absolute favorites.

What were your first impressions when you finished COLD BLOODED?

I think I'm going to go against the grain a little bit and say that this wasn't my favorite in the series thus far.

The first 25% was a massive info dump/recap of what had already happened. I found my attention wavering and I kept putting it down, which was bumming me out because I loved the first two in the series. After that, it got better but I was never in it.

2/2 - Another exciting, fast-paced, action-packed instalment in this series. I love how the characters keep acquiring new, awesome powers due to their contact with Jessica's blood. I wasn't a big fan of Ray as the dogged detective who was going to reveal all Jessica's secrets and thought the idea of turning him was a dreadful one, but with his new powers as a reaper revealed, and shown to come in pretty handy when you're fighting demons and sorcerers and rogue 'fake' werewolves, he began to grow 2/2 - Another exciting, fast-paced, action-packed instalment in this series. I love how the characters keep acquiring new, awesome powers due to their contact with Jessica's blood. I wasn't a big fan of Ray as the dogged detective who was going to reveal all Jessica's secrets and thought the idea of turning him was a dreadful one, but with his new powers as a reaper revealed, and shown to come in pretty handy when you're fighting demons and sorcerers and rogue 'fake' werewolves, he began to grow on me.

The plot for this was similar to the one for Hot Blooded in that it was all GO, GO, GO. I was intending to make it to around the halfway point before putting this down last night, but way before I got anywhere near the halfway point I totally engrossed and unable to take my eyes off the page. I had to keep reading, and in the end finished around 1:30 am wishing I had the next one ready to go immediately.

I did notice a couple of editing errors, like this one on page 1 for goodness sake

'His gave me a long once-over.'

Either that sentence is missing the word 'eyes', or that 'his' should be 'he'. I have noticed a couple of similar types of errors in each book of the series. Not worth not reading or DNFing, but not really what I expect from a traditional publisher - Orbit, which is an imprint of Little, Brown.

The other big drawcard for this book is that Jessica and Rourke finally find some time to get together for some incredible sex. Of course it's incredible, they're a mated pair. He's waited over a thousand years for her, she's waited about 24. But anyway, it's a great romance between a relative of the sabre-tooth tiger and a werewolf, the only problem is that they hardly get any time together when they're not fighting for their lives. Hopefully, with Jessica's future as Queen of the supernaturals she'll be able to bring peace to the Sects, giving her time to spend with her mate. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Cold Blooded is the third book in the Jessica McClain series by Amanda Carlson.

What can I say? When you expect that a series can’t hold you captive and waiting FOR MONTHS (yep! I am still dealing with the fact that I have to wait a MONTHS to know what’s going to happen… Not cool Mrs. Carlson, not cool), you find this one!

We started this series with Jessica completely out of touch with her real persona, and is nice to see her evolving into a confident Alpha! (Well she runs on hope in some 4 ½ Stars

Cold Blooded is the third book in the Jessica McClain series by Amanda Carlson.

We started this series with Jessica completely out of touch with her real persona, and is nice to see her evolving into a confident Alpha! (Well she runs on hope in some parts, but I guess that is part of being a leader).

In this book Jessica is finally spending time with her mate, and well, what can I say about Rourke. This guy is so freaking awesome, he is a badass and a sweetheart, and definitely the perfect compliment for Jessica. He is such a key piece in her life that for romantics like me will have you saying awwww! more than a good couple of times (important, if you live in a house filled with testosterone like mine, you should find a spot away from the guys, unless you like being look at as if you were having some kind of hormonal crisis… Well you might feel like it at the end of the book. Yes! spoiler alert: it ends on a cliffhanger! That will give you some Anger! Oh, and did I mention you will have
to wait months for the next book?).

Anyway, you still get the characters from past books, and some new ones. I love Danny, he has the kind of sense of humor that I appreciate, and he will not let you down in this book, as well as Jessica’s brother, Tyler, he kind of reminds me of my sister (@BookaholicCat), he tries to trust her, and let her evolve and grow into what she is, but at the same time he will give his life to make sure she is safe and happy.
Jessica’s dad is still awesome. Callum is always taking care of his pack and his family and going the extra mile to protect them.

On the new characters… Well some you will love, others you will hate! For example there is one particular witch that I guess we’ll be hearing about her again, that is the typical … B**, or mean girl if you feel more comfortable calling her “mean”, but I think she could become an interesting character. So on the witches side, there will be interesting things, some which will let you wondering, I am sure that a good couple of characters that are introduced in this book, will take a big part in the future. Oh! And talking about wondering, you will get to know some information on the Vamp’s Queen history… Shocking! There will even be the introduction to some of her family members and origins! You will have a mixture of she is a horrible being and some that you will try to “understand her” (she is still a “mean” one).

And off course as if Jessica didn’t have enough with figuring out the whole truth about her, a new relationship, a pack of wolves that still doesn’t fully accept her, a weird relationship with the witches, and a crazy “mean” vamp queen… Well we now have the underworld coming to fill her agenda!

There isn’t much more I can say without spoiling it for you. Just that be ready to be wanting more.
As I said as soon as I finished this book… Mrs. Carlson was “Cold blooded” to leave us hanging like this. (I wasn’t available to start reading anything for a good couple of days… Book hungover?), but none the less it is worth it.

There are a number of unanswered questions that have been plaguing me for a book or two now and I was pleasantly surprised to find a few answers in this installment. I don’t know about you, but the one that’s been bugging me the most was Rourke’s cat. I know that he’s old, powerful and badass so I expected awesomeness and Carlson does not disappoint! I still think that werewolves rule but this series is making me question my disdain for cats, especially those of the shifter variety. Plus, let’s face it, Rourke can make anything look good…

Things are changing in a big way in the Jessica McClain universe. The sorcerers team up with the Demon Lords, the witches form a new alliance and the vampires owe the wolves a debt. There’s a lot to take in and at times, I struggled to absorb the massive influx of information. After the last book, I was just starting to get a feel for Jess’ world and then Carlson goes and changes everything on me! Two new breeds of supes are also introduced so, try not to get too absorbed by the non-stop action; make sure you’re paying attention to all of these important details too! I’m thinking a series re-read might be in order before the fourth book hits shelves next year.

Jessica really comes into her own in Cold Blooded; not only has she accepted that she’s more powerful than most supes but she actually owns it. Generally speaking, paranormals develop their abilities over time but in McClain’s case it was practically overnight. So, even though she deserves to be in the same room as the Vampire Queen, Eudoxia has a hard time accepting Jess as her equal. Jessica has to fight for every inch she gains, but gain she does! My other complaint with this novel is the werewolf angle; it kind of fell to the sidelines amidst all of the crazy, magic mojo going on. Sure the pack still shifts and McClain fights in her Lycan form but the story just didn’t feel like a werewolf book if that makes any sense.

Amanda Carlson has been listening to her readers because Cold Blooded has everything that we’ve been asking for!

My Review:I’m going to try to keep this as spoiler free as possible. It’s hard because it is book 3 in a series, so here goes:

Cold Blooded takes place right after the events of the second book Hot Blooded. Our gang of werewolves led by Jessica McClain – the only female werewolf and part of some kind of prophecy – is on the run again. The book starts off with a bang as magical orbs explode around Jessica and her entourage. Oh, and there is also that delicious sexual tension building between Jess and Rourke as our couple’s attempts for privacy keep getting thwarted.

What I love about this series is the diversity of supernatural beings. Each group has its own hierarchy and organization. I especially loved the badass witches. Don’t mess with them – they are armed and dangerous. The vampires were appropriately creepy. There are even ghosts, crazy sorcerers, demons thrown into the mix. The interaction between the groups made this an interesting read. The magic was cool – from wards to things that explode dramatically. I liked how the leader of each group had their own specific power and how they were able to draw upon their powers.

I could not talk about this series without mentioning the wonderful characters. This is a series with some very powerful female lead characters. Jess as a female alpha wolf was a very strong character whose abilities were only beginning to manifest. Jess had some great diplomatic skills and I can see her continuing to develop as a leader in future books. I loved Tally the head of the witch’s coven. Tally is one powerful witch and someone to keep on your side. Just the image of the witches in army fatigues and carrying automatic weapons was more than enough to make me smile. These are badass witches – don’t mess with them. Eudoxia the vampire queen was a bit of an enigma. I found her to be the master of psychological battle, preferring head games to actual battle.

Of course you cannot talk about this series without talk about that amazing feline shifter – Rourke. Mmmmm…..Yum….Need I say more? The man exudes sexiness. He is an alpha male through and through. I think I can safely say that we’d all like one of him in our lives.

Cold Blooded has lots of action, lots of excitement, lots of explosions, and even more “fur”plosions. This is a perfect book for urban fantasy lovers. Note – the book does end on a cliffhanger, so I’m eagerly anticipating the next book.

For me, this is easily the strongest installment in the Jessica McClain series to date. It feels like things are finally starting to come together. The series arc is advancing. We’re learning more about what makes Jessica so important and powerful. And finally, Rourke and Jessica are doing something about all that sexual tension. Hallelujah.

The book picks up immediately where the last one left off. Marcy has been kidnapped and sorcerers are attacking Jessica and her crew. It starts at a breaknec For me, this is easily the strongest installment in the Jessica McClain series to date. It feels like things are finally starting to come together. The series arc is advancing. We’re learning more about what makes Jessica so important and powerful. And finally, Rourke and Jessica are doing something about all that sexual tension. Hallelujah.

The book picks up immediately where the last one left off. Marcy has been kidnapped and sorcerers are attacking Jessica and her crew. It starts at a breakneck speed and it never lets up. We follow Jess as she seeks help to find her friend –and to shake off the sorcerers and demons who keep trying to blow her up.

We get a closer look at the witches and the vampires as Jessica visits their camps… and I really enjoyed that. The witches are wonderfully snarky and obnoxious; the vampires, all sneering and haughty. But Jessica manages to keep her composure no matter what the situation. Better yet, she finds a way to prevail, against even the most daunting odds.

While the action arc is great, what really makes the story are Jessica’s interactions with her growing “pack.” Of course, the mating with Rouke was off the chain. The sex was hot and extremely satisfying. (I need to get me one of those big cats!) But beyond that, I really loved the dynamic with the other wolves, Naomi, and especially Ray. He really won me over in this book. I’m also intrigued by Tally the witch and the Vampire Queen. So many players… and all so tied to Jessica.

My only complaints are small. I felt like the whole Marcy thing was set up as this big deal, but had a majorly anticlimactic resolution. Ditto on the missing dad. And I feel like we’re sort of missing out on the couples pairings. Maybe I read too much PNR, but I feel like there should be a Marcy & James story –or a Naomi and Danny, perhaps. If all this coupling is happening off page, I feel a little cheated. PLUS… there is another big cliffhanger. I guess that’s just how this series rolls.

I will definitely be back for book 4.

When I first dived into this book, I only expected to find the book to be pleasant, like its predecessors, yet a small part of me still hoped it would be better, that there would be something more to it and I managed to hit the jackpot. This book was amazing!

We finally have Jessica and Rourke reunited and to see them function as a couple was definitely fun. Both of them have come so far from the beginning of the series and it’s nice to just see these independent and stubborn characters function When I first dived into this book, I only expected to find the book to be pleasant, like its predecessors, yet a small part of me still hoped it would be better, that there would be something more to it and I managed to hit the jackpot. This book was amazing!

We finally have Jessica and Rourke reunited and to see them function as a couple was definitely fun. Both of them have come so far from the beginning of the series and it’s nice to just see these independent and stubborn characters function in a relationship and be supportive of one another.

Jessica, as we’ve already come to know, is a strong female lead. She doesn’t back down easily and will do whatever she can to protect the ones she loves. The thing about her was that I never really connected with her until this book. I admired her and even liked her but there was just something missing. Perhaps it’s because we’ve finally gotten to a point where we aren’t so confused about her and all the information that has been thrown at us in the previous books is starting to settle in.

Rourke was amazing. Ah how I love him. He is swoonworthy and it’s nice to finally have him around! In book 1, we were barely introduced to him. In book 2, he wasn’t even there. In book 3, we finally get to meet Rourke and get to know him a whole lot better; which was amazing because otherwise I wouldn’t be shipping the two as much as I did!

The secondary characters are as fabulous as ever and Ray is losing some of his hard-headedness so for those of you who were never fans of him in the first place, it’s all good. He’s never going to stop being stubborn but he wasn’t as much of a jerk this time around. The sad thing about this instalment was that the secondary characters didn’t shine out as much as they had in the previous books because Jessica and Rourke finally have the spotlight.

I wasn’t actually all that unhappy about that fact since I know a lot of us have been waiting for the two to finally get together and if you haven’t already figured that out, the romance doesn’t disappoint. It was worth the wait. But you’ll have to read the book yourself to find out how great it was.

Moving on, this book was fast paced. There was a lot of stake and things kept on happening one after the other but the transitions were well done so the book didn’t feel ‘off’. It was just fun. The plot was well developed and incredibly entertaining and it just reminds me why I love Urban Fantasy so much. Urban Fantasy makes the best brain candy.

I love that there are so many very powerful women in this series. Jess, Tally and Eudoxia all bring a different skill set to the table and I enjoy all of them.
Action packed, all the getting furry, the intensity and the diplomacy Jess brings to the table.

The third story in the Jessica McClain series picks up immediately after the conclusion of the previous book, Hot Blooded. Jessica, her mate Rourke, and their various pack mates and friends have just survived a nasty encounter with the crazed goddess Selena. Now the group is being questioned by a powerful witch, Tally, on the disappearance of her niece, Jessica's friend Marcy. Marcy was kidnapped by a group of sorcerers wanting to get at Jessica. Quickly, the entire situation escalates, and Jessica and Rourke go on the run to escape and re-group.

Cold Blooded is a high-octane ride, filled with crazy action and fights with several close calls. Jessica is coming into unimaginable power and has been quick to adjust, learning how to wield it with ease. While this helps Jessica and her friends as she journeys to save not only Marcy, but her father as well, sometimes I felt that solutions to problems came a little too easily for Jessica and the others. Apparently, none of the new supernaturals have learning curves if Jessica and newly made vampire Ray are examples. While Jessica did have two previous novels to work through some of the issues, in reality, only a few days to weeks have passed since she became the only female werewolf. I would have liked more failures or at least a few more struggles for Jessica as she learned about the supernatural world and her own internal controls.

Jessica does wage through multiple battles before she can save Marcy or her dad. She faces several foes this time around; it was almost too many to keep straight. The action is pretty intense and even a little gruesome at times. I enjoyed the battles most when Jess and her friends worked together as a team to defeat whatever was happening. This was one of the things I liked most about the second book: the teamwork of Jessica and her friends. This time around it felt more like Jessica was the alpha and everyone just did what she said. There wasn't as much camaraderie. In addition, I didn't feel as invested in her journey because something always happened to make things easy for her. There was the mysterious child prophet who gave Jessica answers and it felt a little to convenient. Then there was a friendly ghost, a crazed vampire seer, witches with spells, Ray's new supernatural abilities, and finally her own powers, all giving Jessica an "easy" way out, or at least it felt that way to me. Again, there were some amazing battle scenes, but I just didn't feel connected to the characters and invested in the outcome as much as I had in the prior novels.

Overall, the story moved quickly, from one big scene to the next. Early on, there was a rewarding scene for those who have followed the series since the beginning. It is satisfying to finally have something we've been waiting for since book one to finally happen (wink, wink). I enjoyed her deepening relationship with her mate, Roarke, as well as her friend, Naomi. Both relationships help balance Jessica and create a more enriching character. I do wish, however, that Jessica and Roarke would have finally had a bit more time to be together, but I’ll take what I can get! In addition, Ray is back and he is changed - literally. At the end of the second book, Naomi had to change Ray into a vampire in order to save his life. How the hard-headed ex-cop deals with this is entertaining. However, I am on the fence about one big change that we find out about Ray later in the story. Let's just say it was a little too reminiscent of Butch a la the Black Dagger Brotherhood.

While most of the story lines from the previous books were tied up, once again the author begins the next story at the end the current one. After the final battle is waged, the situation progresses, leaving a cliff-hanger type ending. I'm okay with this type of ending because it truly is the start of the next book rather than an unfinished story. I was, however, left feeling unsatisfied with the storyline involving the vampire Queen Eudoxia and her second, Valdov. There was implication of more going on than meets the eye, yet it wasn't truly addressed. I hope that there is more of that story in the next book.

All in all, Cold Blooded is a good story for those that follow the Jessica McClain series. The book progresses important plots and storylines, but also changes the direction of Jessica's journey. While the action was exciting and intense, sometimes I felt removed from the characters and the outcomes. The next book looks to go back to the format of the second story - with a smaller, close-knit group going on a journey. That is something I can look forward to. ...more

Cold Blooded starts off with a bang (literally!). If you read Hot Blooded, you know it ended with Jessica finding out that her best-witchy friend, Marcy has been kidnapped, and her father's Lieutenant, James has gone rogue in order to search for her. You also know that the most powerful with in the Jessica McClain universe, Tallulah is Marcy's aunt and has come seeking retribution for her niece's kidnapping. This leads to Jessica, Rourke and her best friend, Nick following Tallula back to her coven, which in turns leads us to discover a little baby seer that tells Jessica that the Underworld is seeking her, and will stop at nothing.

I really loved the beginning of this series. A female werewolf in a world of men, who by all means is an abomination; but Jessica is strong, determined to prove she belongs. Jessica's Lycan is ancient, she has walked the earth before, while Jessica has been thrust into something she doesn't understand, at all. I'm okay with the fact that she's this powerful supernatural that's going to change the fate of all others. What I'm not okay with is her accessing the Lycan's powers at her most convinient moments. It seemed that the only times she discovered something new about herself was when she was in danger.

Jessica, to me, went from this strong Alpha female, to a very annoying and bossy female character who made decisions only for herself, as opposed to anyone else's best interest. She knew Danny and her brother Tyler were compelled to help her and prone to worry, not only because of their friendship, but because she was their new Alpha; she was also aware of how resilient Rourke would be with any rash decisions, and as her mate it's understandably so. Yet, she kept making stupid choices thinking she was right every single time.

I don't really have anything positive to say about Cold Blooded, and that's a damn shame. While it starts off with action and intrigue, as far as the plot, it just keeps getting jumbled and made me feel like the characters were just running in circles. Amanda Carlson throws in Sorcerers, demons and vampires, along with witches and werewolves. All the Supes are in an all out war and Jessica the reason for it all, but to me it just felt like she wanted to create chaos for impact, but failed miserably with me. Plus the characters seemed so washed out as opposed to the previous books. And Rourke? He was a chest pound (Or two!) away from being deemed a gorilla-shifter the way he kept losing his shit every damn time. "Me Ape. You Jane. Me fight. You stay. Sit doggie." Ugh!

I was disappointed in the outcome to say the least, and I'm getting a little too tired of the damn cliffhangers at the end of each book. I was hoping to see what the Vamp Queen had in store for Jessica, and to learn more about her and the Lycan Prophecy, but it just turned into a damn circus. We did however, get a little more insight into there being a female werewolf after a millenia of only men, but just a peep. *sigh*

I'm definitely done with the series. I waited a long time for this book only to be disappointed and to have to wait for another to do the same? No thanks. Most things in my review sound petty, so I'm not saying don't give it a try, I'm just saying my enthusiasm with this entire series is over, and I am now moving on to other books.

COLD BLOODED, the third installment in the Jessica McClain series is yet again full of actions, snarky dialogue and more supernatural surprises than I can count on my fingers!

Like the previous two books in the series, COLD BLOODED picks up exactly where we left off in HOT BLOODED. Jessica is in the mist of trying to figure out where everyone is while making her way to New Orleans as an army of sorcerers and demons track her down. Jessica’s only hopes for survival lies in the hands of last perso COLD BLOODED, the third installment in the Jessica McClain series is yet again full of actions, snarky dialogue and more supernatural surprises than I can count on my fingers!

Like the previous two books in the series, COLD BLOODED picks up exactly where we left off in HOT BLOODED. Jessica is in the mist of trying to figure out where everyone is while making her way to New Orleans as an army of sorcerers and demons track her down. Jessica’s only hopes for survival lies in the hands of last person she’d ever thought she’ll need help from, again…Eudoxia, Queen of the Vampires.

In the last book I complained that the plot/story wasn’t as engaging, slow starting but I’m happy to say that it isn’t a problem this time around. The action starts at the first page, as an explosion obliterates Jessica’s work place. From there things literally get more crazy as trouble waits for Jessica at every turn. What I enjoy about this series is, it feels like no time has passed since the last book…the series feels like one giant story, where I don’t have to stop and think about what happened in the last book (each book is approximately 7 months apart). I had hoped that we’d learn more about the Lycan prophecy and although we didn’t learn any new details, readers got to learn the extent of Jessica’s powers...and I was amazed at what she/her blood can do! I’m sure this is still just the tip of what she’s capable of.

All the usual characters make their appearance, some more than others. I had thought that book 3 would be all about the witches, but in my opinion the vampires stole the show especially their queen. Readers learn about Eudoxia’s history/background, why she’s so powerful, and ultimately what she really wants from Jessica. I was also really happy that we got to see more of Naomi and Ray. Things have certainly changed for these two characters since they met Jessica, and I find their relationship and how they differ from their own sect intriguing.

Just when I thought I’ve read everything and anything in the urban fantasy genre (although HOT BLOODED had some major crazy mythology) Carlson throws a bunch of new revelations one after another…don’t know what I’m talking about here’s three things that you’ll find in COLD BLOODED:

• Jessica can communicate with ghosts
• Two words, Baby Oracle
• What kind of “cat” Rourke is.

And there’s plenty more where that came from! What’s so great about the Jessica McClain series is you really don’t know what to expect, it’s unpredictable and fresh. COLD BLOODED was as much fun as the previous books, and is probably the best of the three. While Jessica and company somewhat averted the crisis in COLD BLOODED, the ending leaves reader on a cliffhanger that opens up a new dilemma for Jessica to deal with in the next book, RED BLOODED (book #4). I can’t wait till the next book, especially since they’ll be in a whole new playground! I highly recommend this series; it has everything…action, suspense, romance and mystery!

One of the things I’ve come to love about the Jessica McClain series is just how much fun I have while reading them. Cold Blooded was no different, as we follow Jessica in an action-packed adventure trying to navigate the political minefield that is her supernatural world.

Picking up right where Hot Blooded left off, Cold Blooded sees Jess returning home after rescuing Rourke. She arrives to find her friend Marcy kidnapped, sorcerers hurling exploding magic at her and one seriously powerful, seriously pissed off witch wanting answers. With only a couple of weeks left until she has to fulfill her oath to the Vampire Queen, Jess must race against time to help the witches find Marcy and figure out why the Sorcerers seem desperate to get their hands on Jess. As things normally do with Jess, goal posts change constantly throughout the book and I never quite knew what was coming next.

Cold Blooded builds on the world from previous novels, not only introducing a menagerie of new creatures, but also showcasing the inner workings of some powerful Sects. I really like how each sect, whether it’s witches, vampires or demons, has such distinct characteristics, making for a world rich in mythology. The history of the vampires is particularly detailed, unveiling much more about Eudoxia’s backstory and desires.

In the previous books we saw Jess gain a new understanding of her own abilities and the confidence that followed plays a major role in Cold Blooded. The tides are definitely shifting towards a huge conflict in the supernatural world, with Jess now front and center alongside the other heavy hitters. The layers of the prophecy begin to unravel as other characters share their opinions on Jess’ role. At times she finds this overwhelming but she utilizes the support system around her and stretches herself to understand the full potential of her powers. She’s had to learn to look further than her pack and become savvy when dealing with powerful and often conniving opponents. It’s a steep learning curve with dicey moments, leading to freedom and lives being on the line.

While I love spending time with Jess, some of secondary characters threatened to steal the show. There are certain relationship developments that I really want more details on. If you’ve been waiting for more Rourke time, Cold Blooded should make you very happy with not only more page time but also much more detail on his past. I fell pretty hard for Ray in this installment as I particularly enjoyed the direction his journey has taken; there’s much more to this police detective than meets the eye!

Cold Blooded starts with a bang and the action keeps coming right up until the final pages. Jess now faces her most perilous journey yet, where the stakes have never been higher. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for her next.

The Jessica McClain series is making me want to want to dive back into the Urban Fantasy genre. I love when a book has a lot of action to it and lots of magic and mayhem to it. Amanda Carlson gives you all that, plus more. She even finally gives us some romance action between Jessica and Rourke. (pure HOTNESS and STEAMINESS) Those two fought so hard not to crawl onto and into each other the moment they knew they were mates and it was even worst in this book, when Amanda Carlson had Cold Blooded pick up from when Hot Blooded left off at. When it finally happen between Rourke and Jessica, let’s just say…sparks were flying between the two and I think my hands felt the sparks, when I was holding my Kindle. =)

In Cold Blooded, we are dealing with the demons wanting Jessica due to the supposed crimes she has done against them and now she has the sorcerers coming after her and she has to find her friend, Marcy, who was taken by them. She has no idea why, but she is starting to figure out in this book what she is destined to do. She is forced to make deals with the Vampire Queen ahead of schedule and all heck is about to break loose when she is with the Vampires. The truth is about to revealed to why the Vampire Queen wants Jessica so much and why all the other craziness is happening.

We are going to find out, which supernaturals are going to back up Jessica McClain and, who is going to be against her in Cold Blooded This definitely had a lot going on this book, but Amanda Carlson keeps you turning the pages due to wanting to know what is going to happen next. Plus…the ending is a cliffhanger and it’s a doozy one too. (Ahhhh!!! Must find out what happens next)

***On to one more important thing….what can I say about Rourke…well…the truth will come out on what he is really and he is ONE SEXY CAT!!! He’s not your normal feline though. Let’s just say, he has some very old power to him and he definitely could protect me any day. LOVE him!!!

I highly recommend reading these books in order and I definitely recommend this series to Urban Fantasy readers out there. Jessica McClain is one kick-ass female werewolf, who can take care of herself and everyone around her. She has become a FAVE female character of mine. =)

If you are looking for a high-action packed book with werewolves, vampires, witches, sorcerers, demons, and lots more…then this series is definitely for you.

I’m going to try my best to avoid any spoilers for previous books in the Jessica McClain series. I know it is a newer series by a relatively new author. There are still a lot of people may not have read books one and two yet. I highly recommend that you resolve that issue ASAP.

Once again, Amanda knocked it out of the park with Cold Blooded. This book is just as fast paced and action packed as the previous books. We get to spend plenty of time with some the fav Originally posted at Hotlistens.com.

Once again, Amanda knocked it out of the park with Cold Blooded. This book is just as fast paced and action packed as the previous books. We get to spend plenty of time with some the favorite characters we’ve seen in the past, especially a certain cat that had very little time in book two. *smiles*

This book picks up right were book two left off. Jessica has found and rescued Rourke.. (Woohoo!) They finally get their time together, especially some alone. While it isn’t long lasting, it is well worth it. My favorite quote comes from Jessica while at Rourke’s cabin, “We broke the countertop.” This really made me laugh out loud.

Tyler, Danny, Nick, Naomi and Ray are all with Jessica on this adventure. Jessica goes from one piece of chaos to another, it seems neverending for her. She visits the witches, fights demons and sorcerers and stops by to see the vampires, and that is just part of the story.

We learn a lot about Jessica. She is really coming into her powers. We also learn how powerful her blood really is. We also meet several other very powerful beings. We also learn a lot about some the powerful beings we already know. I don’t want to spoil anything, but there is a lot of behind the scenes plotting for power going on. Jessica learns about much of this as she goes and is very good about taking it all in stride. She is also very good at thinking on her feet to come out on top, even against beings way older and more experienced at negotiations than she is.

Worst part about this book, the cliffhanger end. I’m not a fan of cliffhangers, I despise them. The last part of this book is setting up the first adventure into book four. I say first adventure, because if book four is anything like the first three, then there will be more than one adventure for Jessica and the gang.

The narrator does a great job. She started doing the Jessica McClain series with book two. She does just as good as she did with it. I love how she voices Danny. He didn’t have a huge part in this book, but she nails his voice, in my opinion. She also does a great job with the vampire queen.

If you haven’t tried this series, I highly recommend it. It is great for people who like strong female leads, werewolves and a lot of action. If you’ve enjoyed Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews, The Hollows by Kim Harrison , Downside Ghosts by Stacia Kane and Mercy Thompson by Patricia Briggs, then I think you’ll love this book. ...more

Remember when I said that HOT BLOODED, the second book in the Jessica McClain series, was action packed? I take it back. It was nothing compared to book three, COLD BLOODED. We pick up right after we left off in HOT BLOODED, and this time, Carlson pulls out all the stops- we’ve got witches, sorcerers, demons, vampires, ghosts, oracles, fae, and of course, werewolves. Plus, we finally find out what kind of creature Rourke shifts into! (Hint: something a Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy

One of my complaints about HOT BLOODED was that I felt it was lacking in the development of the mythology that Carlson started in the first book in the series, FULL BLOODED, and I was disappointed by the focus on Jessica and a limited number of characters. Luckily, this was not something I needed to worry about in COLD BLOODED. Pretty much every character that could made an appearance, and I was so busy figuring out what was happening that I forgot to be disappointed that I didn’t learn much more about the prophecy surrounding Jessica. We do learn a lot more about the supernatural world she inhabits, and that was plenty to keep my brain occupied and my curiosity satisfied.

As I write this, I feel like if it were any other book, I would be annoyed by the author trying to shove everything into one book like she did, but Carlson makes it work. It never felt like too much. I’ve fallen in love with Jessica, and her loyalty to those around her and willingness to do what it takes to keep them safe. I’m thrilled to be following her as she figures out this whole werewolf thing- not to mention all the seemingly unprecedented powers that her wolf gives her. And for all of you who were waiting for it, Rourke and Jessica finally get together. And yes, it is as hot as you were likely expecting it would be.

At the back-breaking pace these books go at, I have a feeling we could have many more installments before we finally start to see the full picture- something which doesn’t bother me a bit. There is no dead time COLD BLOODED, and I was very upset when it ended sooner than I thought it would (dang extras making me think there’s more than there is)! You can bet I’ll be picking up RED BLOODED, book four of the Jessica McClain series, the minute it comes out.

Cold Blooded is book three in a fun and action packed urban fantasy series by author Amanda Carlson. If you're a werewolf fan this is a series you must read! Although it has some elements familiar from other were series, the Jessica McClain series still manages to feel fresh and new.

The biggest strength of these books is Jessica herself and she just grows and gets even cooler in Cold Blooded. Jessica is finally getting a better handle on her powers and being the temporary Alpha of her group and Cold Blooded is book three in a fun and action packed urban fantasy series by author Amanda Carlson. If you're a werewolf fan this is a series you must read! Although it has some elements familiar from other were series, the Jessica McClain series still manages to feel fresh and new.

Jessica is finally getting a better handle on her powers and being the temporary Alpha of her group and some of her abilities are pretty awesome. We finally get to see Jessica and Rourke together for an extended period of time...including some much needed sexy times...and I loved finally seeing them act like a couple.

One of my favorite things of this particular book in the series was how much the other supernatural sects played a part in the plot. We get to see some more of the witches toward the book's beginning and then the vamps get tons of face time as well. Also, a fairly new element in the series - ghosts appear too! I loved seeing how friends become enemies and vice versa, and I especially liked how the ghosts were depicted.

The side characters in this series just plain rock. Jessica's father and brother Tyler, Danny and James - all completely awesome. The ever-grumpy cop Ray was awesome in this book. He totally came alive in the audio and his voice was done perfectly! I laughed like crazy at a few different parts in the book, but Ray specifically always made me giggle. He's so grouchy and easily angered by everything everybody does anyway, but with his new 'change' and learning about this secret supernatural world he is totally at a loss and it's great.

This was by far the best in this series yet and I'm really looking forward to what happens to Jessica next, especially with the way this book ended!

Notes on the Narrator: I didn't know anyone else who had tried the audio for this series, so I took a chance on it. I really liked it! Therese Plummer is a new narrator for me and I think she did a great job. I have no idea how she managed to do the various accents the men in Jessica's life have and not make them sound like a woman doing them, but I greatly appreciated it! She was especially awesome as Jessica, with just the right mix of sweet, sassy, and sincere.

Recommended for fans of: urban fantasy, werewolves, a gaggle of sexy men as side characters, grumpy police officer vampires, and scooters.

The storyline picks straight up from where we left book two…. Jessica gets home from rescuing Rourke to find that Marcy has been kidnapped by Sorcerers and that James has gone rogue in an attempt to find her, Tally, the leader of the Witches places the responsibility of finding her on Jess. Jess was always going to look for her Bff anyway but that becomes a different story when Jess becomes the hunted and on finding that Marcy isn’t as defenceless as people assume she is… it all becomes about ke The storyline picks straight up from where we left book two…. After receiving some vital ‘information’ & a couple of pitstops, Jess decides to head to the Vampire Coterie in New Orleans to seek protection & fulfil the debt to their Queen Eudoxia early…..that is if she can make it in one piece…. And that’s just the half of it!
This was yet another spectacular book in the Jessica McClain series. I am constantly wowed by this series and even though we are only at book 3, it is definitely established as one of my most favourite series EVER! I love Jess, she is such a great character, she is so fearless and willing to take risks, further evidence is again in this as she puts herself on the line, time & time again. I love her relationship with Rourke, love the whole mating situation and was sooooo grateful they got to be together in this book because we didn’t see much of him until the end of book two. They have great chemistry, the sizzle right off the page and I don’t think I’m alone when I got 27% in and breathed the word …finally. Rourke is totally swoon-worthy & smoking hot!!! Oh and we eventually find out what he is !!! and it’s awesome!!!
It’s not often when you read a book that you are interested in & care about every single character, wanting not only Jess & Rourke’s story but everyone elses (I want Marcy & James story at the minute).
The storyline was great, it is all action, all of the time and just the way I like them. Jess is really causing a stir in the supernatural world, unintentionally causing waves of unrest & change – which I love! – bringing out all of the supernaturals who want to use her for some reason or other and while some a forthright in what they want, others..not so much. It’s so hard to know who to trust in these books, there is always some hidden agenda or misdirection going on and that drags you into the story so much, keeps your interest & holds it all of the way through… its exciting, it’s magical, it’s violent, it’s romantic, it’s hot and as always I’m left counting the days for more. 5*s

While Cold Blooded it non stop action I would like to have seen more down time for the gang. I felt like Jessica and Rourke needed more time to really build their mate bond than what they’ve received in the series so far.

I liked the complex story line that leads Jessica and gang from the Ozark Mountains to the New Orleans. Even though Jessica was raised within the werewolf pack she has a learning curve since she is new werewolf. But luckily she has a great support team to help her feel her way around. And head of that team seems to be her wolf that seems to know a lot about the supe world and their power. But it looks like she only gives Jessica the info on a need to know base.

Cold Blooded leaves us wondering what is next for Jessica and the demons. I’m hoping since the next book’s title is Red Blooded that there will be some blood shield because Jessica and the gang has been pretty lucky up to the is point. It’s time for someone to get hurt or even die. WHAT? I know but it’s Urban Fantasy, we need a little darkness and sadness.

I read rest of the series but this time around I decided to give the audio a try since I was running behind on my reading schedule. Torres Plumber goes a great job with the female voices and the male voices that have accents. But the male characters like Rourke, Tyler and Nick, she doesn’t do a good job of making their voices different and at times it was hard to follow who was “speaking”. But I’ve had that problem with other narrators so I won’t hold it against her. But one thing that did bug me about the narration job was when Jessica speak to her brother Tyler mind to mind. At first their voices was done in a whisper when they were “mind talking” but later the narrator dropped that and had them speaking in normal tones. It was a little confusing. So while the narrator was not bad (I would give her another try narrating a different book) I think I’ll stick to reading this series. ...more
