Day 11: Eleven Pipers Piping
The St Mary Undercroft organ was built in 1999 by William Drake and is based on a woodcut illustration made by Augustus Welby #Pugin, the architect responsible for many of the decorative interior designs of the Palace of Westminster. The doors are characteristic features of Pugin’s designs and derived from medieval examples such as a 600 year old organ from @[167504736664889:274:Valère Basilica] at Sion in Switzerland. The angels on the inside doors of the organ case each play a different musical instrument and were painted by Fleur Kelly in the formal medieval style favoured by Pugin. Pugin’s illustration was not coloured so the artists referred to 19th century painted cases by Pugin and others while also matching their colours to the existing decoration of the chapel vault. http://goo.gl/ySNaaE
