About
Who is Deb?
Hi! I started this adventure after making children's clothes for my grandkids - in particular handmade raincoats. Friends, and friends of friends kept asking me to make them and fellow sewists wanted to know where they could get the fabrics I used - so here I am.
I LOVE scouring different designer blogs and manufacturers to find new and exciting prints and products, especially since laminates have improved so much in just the past few years.
What do I do when I'm not working in the shops?
♥ I travel a LOT!
♥ I make sure I learn something new everyday.

What makes a fabric considered safe for children's products?
The USA Federal Act of 2008 states that children's products cannot contain more than 300 parts per million of lead. “Children’s products” are defined as “a consumer product designed or intended primarily for children 12 years of age or younger.” Three phthalates, DEHP, DBP, and BBP, have been permanently prohibited by Congress in concentration of more than 0.1% in “children’s toys” or “child care articles.” A “child care article” means a product that a child 3 and younger would use for sleeping, feeding, sucking or teething. Producers selling children's products are required to meet these guidelines within the USA
What is the difference between oilcloth and laminated cotton?
Laminated cotton is softer and easier to sew. The laminates I sell have all been tested and approved for use in children's products. My cotton laminates are wipeable, and most are washable - as with most cotton fabrics be sure to "set" color - especially darks & reds - if you plan on washing.
Oilcloth is made using petroleum products and is tested unsafe for children's products - I do not sell the traditional oilcloth, but many people still refer to laminated cotton as oilcloth so I use it as a search term.
How do you care for laminated cotton fabric? Any special sewing techniques?
Each of my listings give the manufacturer's care instructions - they are different depending on the manufacturer. I wash and dry all of the prints I sell, but it changes the "look" when the cotton shrinks a bit - and it becomes less shiny - so please TEST first to see if it gives you the "look" you like. The older cotton laminates (I don't carry any) did come separated when washed.
See sewing tips and techniques are on my website! http://www.justlaminates.com/
Does your laminated cotton work for chair pads, bibs, raincoats, tablecloths, splat mats, etc.? Does it have UV protection?
Yes, it works well - but it's not thick like naugahyde. You can visit my facebook page for photos of seat cushion projects here at https://www.facebook.com/justlaminates and samples are available (4/$1.00) here https://www.etsy.com/listing/74490962/ so you can see it first. The fabric is wipeable, soft, pliable and waterproof.
UV protection? - No it does not - It is not intended for continued outdoor use. The cotton will fade and deteriorate with the sun exposure.
Can you iron your laminated cotton fabric? or have it shipped with a tube?
Some manufacturers suggest no ironing and "Finger pressing" is usually the recommended option ... and often this is just fine ... BUT if you choose to iron here's what I've found successful - but please test first as I can't guarantee success - I do have tube shipping available and listed in my store here https://www.etsy.com/listing/108850165/
Trim the selvedges (where the laminate ends on the sides) so it doesn't stick to your ironing cloth, board or iron - Use a pressing cloth on a lower setting - iron on the non-laminated side being very careful not to touch the iron to the laminated surface. I sometimes increase the heat and add steam too. I can't always get out all the wrinkles, but this works for me.
See my website too!
Can I return my fabric?
Due to this fabric being cut to length and health policies I cannot accept returns unless I've made a mistake. Please purchase samples if in doubt about color as monitors can change the appearance.
Samples are listed in the store (4/$1.00 ) in the custom / samples / tube section or here is the direct link https://www.etsy.com/listing/74490962/
Does you laminated cotton have BPA?
The suppliers in the US are required to meet CPSIA compliance - Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act - but are not required to test for BPA - but many have - IF the manufacturer has provided me written documentation of testing I add "BPA free" to the listing.
This does NOT mean that there is BPA in the others - just that they haven't provided me written test documents.
Can you make me a tablecloth? or if I do it myself do the edges fray?
I'm sorry - I stopped taking orders for sewing when the store got so busy. Some people purchase the fabric from me and have someone else make the tablecloth - I can ship directly to your seamstress if you'd like that - just be sure to change the shipping address when you place your order.
Do the edges fray? Generally the laminate keeps the edges from fraying - and if you're patient you can trim with sharp zig zag or decorative scissors, but you may get the occasional thread.
Is your laminate food safe?
Food safe is a tough one - the FDA has not established a test for our manufacturers to use because their standards are for testing a "product" - not the components of a product. In other words the cotton laminate may be "food safe" but there's no test --- the laminates I carry have all been tested for CPSIA compliance (approved for children's products) and some have been tested for BPA also. Some of the laminated cotton out there have NOT been tested and should NOT be used for children's products. I do carry a tested FOOD SAFE lining fabric and have just found some laminates that have been approved with a matte finish. You can search "within" my store using "food safe" to view them.
