Many of the most widely used features in Analysis Workspace appear in context menus.
\n
\n"},{"title":"Engagement Metrics You Need for Adobe Analytics","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
Take advantage of the advanced features in Adobe Analytics by building and applying calculated metrics, the data points created in Adobe Analytics after data has been processed and is accessible in the Adobe interface. Interestingly, calculated metrics don’t have to contain a calculation, but they usually do. A calculated metric in Adobe Analytics could be a metric with a different attribution method, segment, or calculation applied to it. Following are several simple calculated metrics that you should find useful as you begin your Adobe Analytics journey.
\n
Page views per visit metric
\n
Companies care about the amount of visitor engagement on their website and mobile app. A common metric that dissects engagement uses this calculation: page views divided by visits. The thinking behind this metric is simple:
\n
\n
Page views: Focuses on quantity, showing the amount of content viewed
\n
Visits: Focuses on quality and is used as the denominator to ensure that the analysis is focusing on visits in which a lot of content is viewed at once
\n
\n
The page views per visit metric has been used by digital analysts for decades and provides a useful lens into the quality of the visits that are being driven by your marketing channels, device types, or geographies. The following figure shows how the metric is built in Adobe’s interface.
\n

\n
When you apply the page views per visit metric (or any calculated metric), also include in your analysis a metric that isn’t calculated. This non-calculated metric will help provide context to your analysis. For example, suppose you’re analyzing mobile devices that access your site and notice that a specific device, the Microsoft Kin, has the highest page views per visit by far. Before you call your team to let them know that your site has to be rebuilt with the dimensions of this device from 2010 in mind, it would be smart to add the visits and unique visitors metrics to your analysis. This additional context will help you realize that page views per visit was high for the Kin because only one visitor came to your site with that device. The additional context of your non-calculated metrics provided a valuable lesson: Don’t be fooled by high calculations without context.
\n
Content velocity
\n
Unfortunately, page views per visit has other faults besides a potential lack of context. When page views per visit is applied to the page dimension, it shows only the number of times each page is revisited, on average, within a visit. A more interesting question is, “What pages help drive additional page views on other pages?” The answer will provide you with the pages that are most likely to encourage your visitors to be engaged on your site. This additional metric is easy to build. The metrics are the same as page views per visit, with page views in the numerator and visits in the denominator. The only change has to do with the attribution model applied to the numerator. Use the Calculated Metric Builder in Adobe to apply a non-default attribution model set to Participation, as shown in the following figure.
\n

\n
Thanks to the magic of participation, every subsequent page view is included in the count of page views when you apply participation. After you create the content velocity metric, you can apply it to the page dimension to discover the pages that are not only being viewed often per visit but are also convincing your visitors to continue reading other pages on your site, too.
\n"},{"title":"Adobe Analytics Analysis Workspace Productivity Hacks","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
Face it: You’re busy at work. Whether you’re a marketer, an analyst, or a data scientist, your time is limited and your calendar is full of meetings. To make the most of the time that you spend in Adobe’s Analysis Workspace tool, use the following list of our favorite productivity hacks to make the most of every second that you spend in the Adobe interface:
\n
\n
When working in a freeform table, you may want to select multiple rows of data at the same time. Shift-click (Mac and PC) to select multiple contiguous rows of data. Or Command-click (Mac) or Control-click (PC) to select multiple noncontiguous rows of data.
\n
Our most-used keyboard shortcut is Command+S (Mac) or Control+S (PC) to save the current project. We’re compulsive savers because we know there’s always a chance that the browser or computer will crash, and we’d hate to lose our analysis work. Add Shift to this keyboard combination (Command+ Shift +S on a Mac or Control+Shift +S on a PC) to Save As so you can duplicate and rename the project.
\n
Another useful keyboard shortcut is Command+C (Mac) or Control+C (PC) to copy data from a freeform table to the clipboard. We like to use this to more easily extract data out of Analysis Workspace into other analysis tools such as Excel or even into an email message.
\n
If we were to analyze the keyboard shortcuts that we use the most, Command+Z (Mac) or Control+Z (PC) would be high on this list. This keyboard shortcut for undo is useful when analyzing because you often begin exploring your data in one path, realize there isn’t much of interest there, and then want to undo your work step by step. If you ever undo too far, you can always press Command+Shift+Z (Mac) or Control+Shift+Z (PC) to redo a step.
\n
We love creating calculated metrics on-the-fly. This task is necessary when you have two metrics in a freeform table to which you want to apply a simple calculation: divide, subtract, add, or multiply. First, highlight the column headers of two metrics (by clicking to highlight one metric, then Shift-click or Command-click or Control-click a second metric). Second, right-click one of the highlighted column headers. Third, click Create Metric from Selection and choose the math operator to apply. If you want to apply a function to just a single calculated metric, apply Mean, Median, Column Max, Column Min, or Column Sum to any single metric. One final timesaver is to open a single metric in Calculated Metric Builder, as shown at the end of the following figure.
\n
\n

\n
Each of these productivity hacks will help speed your analysis and increase your skill. We hope you enjoy all the free time you now have to continue learning about Analysis Workspace!
\n"}],"videoInfo":{"videoId":null,"name":null,"accountId":null,"playerId":null,"thumbnailUrl":null,"description":null,"uploadDate":null}},"sponsorship":{"sponsorshipPage":false,"backgroundImage":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0},"brandingLine":"","brandingLink":"","brandingLogo":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0},"sponsorAd":"","sponsorEbookTitle":"","sponsorEbookLink":"","sponsorEbookImage":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0}},"primaryLearningPath":"Advance","lifeExpectancy":"Six months","lifeExpectancySetFrom":"2023-12-03T00:00:00+00:00","dummiesForKids":"no","sponsoredContent":"no","adInfo":"","adPairKey":[]},"status":"publish","visibility":"public","articleId":260427},{"headers":{"creationTime":"2023-12-01T15:39:09+00:00","modifiedTime":"2023-12-01T15:39:09+00:00","timestamp":"2023-12-01T18:01:09+00:00"},"data":{"breadcrumbs":[{"name":"Technology","_links":{"self":"https://dummies-api.dummies.com/v2/categories/33512"},"slug":"technology","categoryId":33512},{"name":"Information Technology","_links":{"self":"https://dummies-api.dummies.com/v2/categories/33572"},"slug":"information-technology","categoryId":33572},{"name":"Data Science","_links":{"self":"https://dummies-api.dummies.com/v2/categories/33577"},"slug":"data-science","categoryId":33577},{"name":"Big Data","_links":{"self":"https://dummies-api.dummies.com/v2/categories/33578"},"slug":"big-data","categoryId":33578}],"title":"Beyond Boundaries: Unstructured Data Orchestration","strippedTitle":"beyond boundaries: unstructured data orchestration","slug":"beyond-boundaries-unstructured-data-orchestration","canonicalUrl":"","seo":{"metaDescription":"Find out what data orchestration is and how an unstructured data architecture can work for you.","noIndex":0,"noFollow":0},"content":"Getting the most out of your unstructured data is an essential task for any organization these days, especially when considering the disparate storage systems, applications, and user locations. So, it’s not an accident that data orchestration is the term that brings everything together.\r\n\r\nBringing all your data together shares similarities with conducting an orchestra. Instead of combining the violin, oboe, and cello, this brand of orchestration combines distributed data types from different places, platforms, and locations working as a cohesive entity presented to applications or users anywhere. That’s because historically, accessing high-performance data outside of your computer network was inefficient. Because the storage infrastructure existed in a silo, systems like HPC Parallel (which lets users store and access shared data across multiple networked storage nodes), Enterprise NAS (which allows large-scale storage and access to other networks), and Global Namespace (virtually simplifies network file systems) were limited when it came to sharing. Because each operated independently, the data within each system was siloed making it a problem collaborating with data sets over multiple locations.\r\n\r\nCollaboration was possible, but too often you lost the ability to have high performance. This Boolean logic decreased potential because having an IT architecture that supported both high performance and collaboration with data sets from different storage silos typically became an either/or decision: You were forced to choose one but never both.\r\n
What is data orchestration?
\r\nData orchestration is the automated process of taking siloed data from multiple data storage systems and locations, combining and organizing it into a single namespace. Then a high-performance file system can place data in the edge service, data center, or cloud service most optimal for the workload.\r\n\r\nThe recent rise of data analytic applications and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities has accelerated the use of data across different locations and even different organizations. In the next data cycle, organizations will need both high-performance and agility with their data to compete and thrive in a competitive environment.\r\n\r\nThat means data no longer has a 1:1 relationship with the applications and compute environment that generated it. It needs to be used, analyzed, and repurposed with different AI models and alternate workloads, and across a remote, collaborative environment.\r\n
Hammerspace’s technology makes data available to different foundational models, remote applications, decentralized compute clusters, and remote workers to automate and streamline data-driven development programs, data insights, and business decision making. This capability enables a unified, fast, and efficient global data environment for the entire workflow — from data creation to processing, collaboration, and archiving across edge devices, data centers, and public and private clouds.
\r\n\r\nControl of enterprise data services for governance, security, data protection, and compliance can now be implemented globally at a file-granular level across all storage types and locations. Applications and AI models can access data stored in remote locations while using automated orchestration tools to provide high-performance local access when needed for processing. Organizations can grow their talent pools with access to team members no matter where they reside.\r\n
Decentralizing the data center
\r\nData collection has become more prominent, and the traditional system of centralized data management has limitations.
Issues of centralized data storage can limit the amount of data available to applications. Then, there are the high infrastructure costs when multiple applications are needed to manage and move data, multiple copies of data are retained in different storage systems, and more headcount is needed to manage the complex, disconnected infrastructure environment. Maintenance and reliability teams often have to scramble to diagnose and fix the problem as quickly as possible — often resulting in overtime pay and expedited shipping costs for emergency spare parts. Sudden and catastrophic machine failures can also harm worker morale and jeopardize worker safety. Many manufacturers keep spare parts for critical machine assets in inventory because calendar-based maintenance dictates when parts should be replaced — whether or not replacement is needed. The alternative is overspending to get parts on short notice and expensive downtime while you wait for the parts to arrive. Whether hoarding parts or paying more for last-minute parts, both methods are inefficient and costly. When you create graphics, optimize images, or prepare video for a website, the results have to be sharp, detailed, and fast loading. Three popular forms of graphics you use on a website are photo-realistic images, images such as logos with large areas of solid color, and images that are a combination of images and text. Here are some friendly reminders for creating and optimizing graphics for websites:
\n
\n
\n
Optimize photo-realistic images using the JPEG format.
\n
\n
\n
Optimize images with large areas of solid color using the GIF format.
\n
\n
\n
When optimizing graphics that have text overlaid on a photorealistic image, create separate slices for the areas of the image that are photorealistic, and create additional slices for the areas of the image that contain text. Export the areas containing text using the GIF format, and export the photo-realistic areas of the image using the JPEG format.
\n
\n
\n
For high quality JPEG images, use a quality setting of 70 when exporting. For smaller JPEG images, you can get by with a quality setting of 50.
\n
\n
\n
If you’re creating a photo gallery for a product, or for a photographer, export the images in the JPEG format with a quality setting of 80.
\n
\n
\n
When compressing images using the JPEG format, pay careful attention to the edges of objects in the image. When you begin to see pixels, or the edges lack definition, you’ve compressed the image too far.
\n
\n
\n
When exporting images using the GIF file format, use the least number of colors that yields a crisp image and you’ll have a fast loading image.
\n
\n
\n
When you resample images for websites, the maximum resolution you need is 72 pixels per inch.
\n
\n
\n
Websites with no video are becoming rarer. Video is everywhere on the Internet: for entertainment, in ads, to promote rock stars and other artists. When video is well done, it’s a thing of beauty. However there are some things you need to consider when adding video to a web page:
\n
\n
\n
Video takes up lots of bandwith. If the bandwidth for a website is exceeded, the charge can be rather costly. Instead of hosting video on a website, upload it to YouTube, and then embed the video in a webpage or blog.
\n
\n
\n
Don’t violate copyright laws. Don’t copy video from other websites, or other people’s YouTube videos and use them on your website.
\n
\n
\n
Check the license: If you do use a video from a supplier or manufacturer on a commercial website, make sure you are covered by the supplier or manufacturer’s license.
\n
\n
\n
Use a high quality camcorder to record video: No, an iPhone is not a high quality camcorder. If you encode poor quality video for the web, you get poor quality video. Remember the old axiom: Garbage in, garbage out.
\n
\n
\n
Make sure the website viewers have the necessary plug-ins to view the video.
\n
\n
\n
If you create HTML5 pages with video, make sure the intended audience for the site uses HTML5-compliant browsers.
\n
\n
\n
Don’t use transitions when you edit multiple video clips to create a video for the web. Video transitions look great on HD video, but don’t look good when you encode a video for the web.
\n
\n
\n"}],"videoInfo":{"videoId":null,"name":null,"accountId":null,"playerId":null,"thumbnailUrl":null,"description":null,"uploadDate":null}},"sponsorship":{"sponsorshipPage":false,"backgroundImage":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0},"brandingLine":"","brandingLink":"","brandingLogo":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0},"sponsorAd":"","sponsorEbookTitle":"","sponsorEbookLink":"","sponsorEbookImage":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0}},"primaryLearningPath":"Advance","lifeExpectancy":"Six actions.
\n
Here are the gestures you need to know for Face ID iPhone models, along with their old-school (Touch ID) equivalents:
\n
\n
Go Home: Swipe up from the bottom to return to the Home screen or to return to the first Home screen page from other Home screen pages.\n
\n
Old-school equivalent: Press the Home button.
\n
\n
\n
Switch apps: Swipe up and pause without lifting your finger to invoke the app switcher. Or swipe right along the bottom of the screen to switch to the last app you used.\n
\n
Old-school equivalent: Double-press the Home button.
\n
\n
\n
\n
To close a running app, swipe it upward in the App Switcher. Or use two fingers — place one finger on each app’s preview, and then swipe upward — to close two running apps, or three fingers to close three running apps.
\n
Here is how to maneuver through the iPhone’s touchscreen icons, buttons, and connections on all current iPhone models:
\n
\n
Swipe up from the bottom of the screen (Face ID models) or press the Home button (Touch ID models) to return to the first Home screen page at any time.
\n
Flick a finger to scroll through music, pictures, emails, contacts, and more.
\n
Tap the screen to open apps, play songs, choose photos, and so on.
\n
Pinch and unpinch to enlarge web pages and pictures or make them smaller. The actions involve placing your thumb and index finger against the screen. Then, keeping the thumb in place, drag your index finger to pinch or unpinch. You can move both your thumb and finger if you prefer.
\n
Swipe the screen from top to bottom on the left side to open Notification Center; swipe from bottom to top to close it.
\n
Swipe the screen from top to bottom on the right side (Face ID) or from bottom to top (Touch ID) to open Control Center. Swipe in the opposite direction to close Control Center. Alternatively, simply tap above or below Control Center.
\n
Correct errors by long-pressing to display an insertion point and a magnification loupe, and then sliding your finger on the screen to place the insertion point exactly where you want to edit. Alternatively, long-press the spacebar until the keys go blank, and then use the keyboard area like a touchpad.
\n
Undo the last thing you did (usually) by swiping left with three fingers. Or to redo something you undid, swipe right with three fingers.
\n
\n
Trust the virtual keyboard. The Predictive feature suggests word completions, while the Auto-Correction feature corrects many mistakes on the fly.
\n"},{"title":"Making a call on your iPhone","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
You have several options for making a phone call from your iPhone. First, tap the Phone icon on the Home screen, and then tap one of these tabs:
\n
\n
Favorites: The iPhone equivalent of speed dialing; the list of people (and specific numbers) you call most often. Tap a favorite to call it. To add a contact to your Favorites list, tap the person’s name in the Contacts list, and then tap Add to Favorites. In the Add to Favorites pop-up panel, tap the type of favorite — Message, Call, Video, or Mail — and then tap the phone number or email address to use.
\n
Recents: Tapping the Recents icon displays the iPhone call log. Recents displays a list of all recent calls made or received, as well as calls you missed. Tap a name to call that person.
\n
Contacts: Scroll through the list of contacts until you find the person you want to call. Tap the person’s name and then tap the appropriate phone number (such as the Home number or the Mobile number).
\n
Keypad: Manually dial on a virtual touchtone keypad.
\n
Voicemail: Through Visual Voicemail, you can listen to voicemail messages in any order you want. To play back a voicemail, tap the name or number in question. Then tap the play/pause icon that shows up to the left of the name or number. Returning a call is as simple as tapping the Call Back button.
\n
\n
Here are two more ways to make calls:
\n
\n
Ask Siri. Press and hold down\n
\n
The side button on iPhones with Face ID
\n
The Home button on iPhones with Touch ID
\n
The center button on most wired headsets
\n
Say “call” or “dial” followed by either the name of someone in your contacts or a phone number. If there’s no FaceTime button, or if it appears dimmed and can’t be selected, that contact isn’t set up for FaceTime video.
\n
\n
In the Phone app, you can long-press a contact and choose a quick action, which may include Call, Message, FaceTime, and Mail, depending on the information you have for that contact.
\n"},{"title":"Getting help when your iPhone acts up","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
Most of the time, your iPhone behaves itself. But every so often it might cause you a problem. Here’s a quick review of things you can try if your iPhone misbehaves.
\n
Start with the first step — suggestions in later steps are more drastic.
\n
\n
Restart your iPhone. For iPhones with Face ID, press the volume up button, press the volume down button, and then hold down the side button until the Apple logo appears. Then release the side button. For iPhones with Touch ID, press and hold down the top (or side) button and the Home button. When you see the Apple logo, release both buttons.
\n
Force any frozen applications to quit. Swipe the app upward from the app switcher.
\n
Reset the iPhone settings. Tap the Settings icon on your Home screen, and then tap General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset Reset All Settings. Resetting iPhone settings won’t erase your data, but you’ll probably have to change some settings afterwards.
\n
Restore your iPhone. Connect your iPhone to your computer as though you were about to sync. Then select the iPhone in the iTunes source list (or Finder sidebar for macOS Catalina or later), and click the Restore button on the Summary tab or the General tab (Finder).
\n
\n
The last suggestion erases all your data and media and resets all your settings.
\n
Because your data and media (except photos you’ve taken as well as contacts, calendar events, and playlists you’ve created or modified since your last sync) still exist on your computer, you shouldn’t lose anything.
\n
Your next sync will take longer, and you will have to reset any settings you’ve changed since you purchased your iPhone. But your media and data files shouldn’t be affected.
\n
One last thing: If you’re using iCloud, photos you’ve taken and calendar events and new contacts you’ve added since your last sync should be in the cloud and should reappear after you restore.
\n
The only items in danger, at least in theory, are playlists you’ve created on your iPhone since your last sync. However, it wouldn’t hurt to let Finder (or iTunes) back up the contents of your iPhone before you click the Restore button.
\n"},{"title":"10 ways to have fun with Siri","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
Everyone loves Siri, the (usually) intelligent assistant inside our iPhones. And if you press Tab again, the Save As field becomes active once more.
\n
That’s because the Save As field, the Tags and Search fields, and the sidebar are mutually exclusive, and only one can be active at any time. You can always tell which item is active by the thin blue border around it.
\n
When you want to switch to a different folder to save a file, click the folder in the sidebar or click anywhere in the file list box to make the file list active. Here are the moves you need:
\n
\n
If you type while the file list box is active, the list box selects the folder that most closely matches the letter(s) that you type. It’s a little strange because you won’t see what you type — you’ll be typing blind, so to speak.
\n
When the file list is active, the letters that you type don’t appear in the Save As field. If you want to type a filename, you have to activate the Save As field again (by clicking in it or navigating with the Tab key) before you can type in it.
\n
If you type while the sidebar is active, nothing happens. But you can use the up- and down-arrow keys to move around in the sidebar.
\n
Pressing Shift reverses the order of the sequence. If you press Shift+Tab, the active item moves from the Save As field to the Sidebar to the Search box and back to the Save As field again.
\n
\n"},{"title":"Backing up, and backing up your back-up","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
When working in macOS Sonoma, would you like to ensure that you won’t lose more than a little work no matter what happens — even if your office burns to the ground; floods; is destroyed by a tornado, hurricane, or earthquake; or robbed? If so, follow these recommendations.
\n
Keeping a single backup is not enough. Two backups might be okay. Three is much safer and gives you the option of keeping the third somewhere off-site, such as at a friend or relative’s house or in a safe-deposit box at your bank.
\n
To make those three backups, you need to create a set-and-forget system that runs automatically in the background without you needing to start them. Consider this type of system:
\n
\n
\n
Use macOS’s excellent Time Machine feature as your first line of defense. Time Machine is so easy and so effective that there’s no excuse not to use it. But although Time Machine maintains multiple copies of files, they’re all stored on the same disk. If something’s worth backing up to one place, it’s worth backing up three times.
\n
You can add a second or third backup disk (or even more) to Time Machine if you like. Connect the disk and choose System Settings → General → Time Machine to display the Time Machine pane in System Settings. Click the Add (+) button, select the disk in the dialog that opens, and click Set Up Disk. Choose backup options — you’ll probably want to encrypt the backups — and then click Done.
\n
Time Machine then backs up the disks. But (you’ll have spotted the problem here) both your Time Machine backup disks are in the same place, so a single natural disaster (conflagration, inundation, fulmination …) or deliberate disaster (your choice) can take them both out. That’s why it’s wise to create a third backup disk and store it somewhere off-site.
\n
\n
Use an online backup service. such as iDrive or Backblaze to back up your Mac to the cloud.
\n
These services start around the $5 to $10 per month level, so they’re good value. Most can back up your other computers and devices as well as your Mac.
\n
Use a cloning app such as Carbon Copy Cloner ($49.99) or SuperDuper ($27.95) to clone your Mac’s startup disk to another hard drive every day (for example, in the early hours of the morning). This gives you a bootable backup you can use for recovery if your Mac goes south.
\n
Lastly, store your current work in iCloud or a competitor — such as Dropbox, Microsoft’s OneDrive, or Google Drive — so that you have an instantly accessible online backup, which also allows you to work on your documents no matter where you happen to be.
\n
\n
You must test the integrity of each backup to make sure it will work when you need it. Just restore a few files and make sure they’re usable. You’ll then be sure you can recover fully should disaster strike.
\n"},{"title":"Burning a playlist to a CD","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
If you want to take your music somewhere other than your Mac or share it with others on a physical medium, you can burn your music playlists to CD. While CDs are a premillennial technology nearing the final approach to digital oblivion, they’re still extremely widely used, and a thoughtfully customized CD can make (or break) a relationship.
\n
Apple has played its part in hastening the demise of the CD and DVD by removing optical drives from Macs, so you’ll normally need to add an external CD or DVD burner to your Mac. Most such burners connect via USB 3 or USB-C, so you should have no problem making the connection to your Mac.
\n
With the drive connected, you can start burning audio CDs that you can listen to in almost any audio CD player. The only trick is making sure that the total playing time of the songs in the playlist is less than the capacity of the blank CD you’re using, which is usually 74 to 80 minutes.
\n
Don’t forget to account for the gap between tracks, which is 2 seconds by default. When you have all the songs you want on your CD in the playlist, choose File → Burn Playlist to Disc. The Burn Settings dialog appears.
\n
The default type of disc Music burns is an audio CD, but it can also burn two other types:
\n
\n
MP3 CD is a special format that can be played in many CD audio players and set-top DVD players. The advantage of an MP3 CD is that rather than holding a mere 74 to 80 minutes of music, it can hold more than 100 songs (depending on the bitrate at which they’re encoded). The disadvantage is that many regular audio CD players won’t play MP3 CDs.
\n
A data CD or DVD is a disc formatted to be read and mounted by any computer, Mac or Windows.
\n
\n
If you click the Burn button now, you’ll get an audio CD. To burn an MP3 CD or Data CD or DVD, select the appropriate radio button in the Burn Settings dialog.
\n
When you’ve made your choice, click the Burn button. In a few minutes, you’ll have an audio CD that contains all the songs on the playlist — and plays the songs in the order in which they appeared in the playlist. Eject the freshly minted CD, label it carefully before you forget, and then take it for a test spin.
\n"}],"videoInfo":{"videoId":null,"name":null,"accountId":null,"playerId":null,"thumbnailUrl":null,"description":null,"uploadDate":null}},"sponsorship":{"sponsorshipPage":false,"backgroundImage":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0},"brandingLine":"","brandingLink":"","brandingLogo":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0},"sponsorAd":"","sponsorEbookTitle":"","sponsorEbookLink":"","sponsorEbookImage":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0}},"primaryLearningPath":"Explore","lifeExpectancy":"Two years","lifeExpectancySetFrom":"2023-10-31T00:00:00+00:00","dummiesForKids":"no","sponsoredContent":"no","adInfo":"","adPairKey":[]},"status":"publish","visibility":"public","articleId":301128},{"headers":{"creationTime":"2016-03-27T16:46:43+00:00","modifiedTime":"2023-11-01T15:58:00+00:00","timestamp":"2023-11-01T18:01:10+00:00"},"data":{"breadcrumbs":[{"name":"Technology","_links":{"self":"https://dummies-api.dummies.com/v2/categories/33512"},"slug":"technology","categoryId":33512},{"name":"Software","_links":{"self":"https://dummies-api.dummies.com/v2/categories/33618"},"slug":"software","categoryId":33618},{"name":"Money Management Software","_links":{"self":"https://dummies-api.dummies.com/v2/categories/33653"},"slug":"money-management-software","categoryId":33653},{"name":"QuickBooks","_links":{"self":"https://dummies-api.dummies.com/v2/categories/33656"},"slug":"quickbooks","categoryId":33656}],"title":"QuickBooks Online For Dummies Cheat Sheet","strippedTitle":"quickbooks online for dummies cheat sheet","slug":"quickbooks-online-dummies-cheat-sheet","canonicalUrl":"","seo":{"metaDescription":"Learn keyboard shortcuts for these QuickBooks apps and which types of data will not migrate from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online.","noIndex":0,"noFollow":0},"content":"You can make the most of your work in QuickBooks Online by using handy and time-savings shortcuts and tool buttons.\r\n\r\nUsing keyboard shortcuts means you can seamlessly access various windows and pages without touching a mouse. Your iPhone doesn’t have to be connected to power.
\n
To enable the ability to speak commands to Siri, go to Settings → Siri → Listen for “Hey Siri” and toggle the switch on (green).
\n
Be reminded about an event or a task. For example, if you’re viewing a Calendar event, engage Siri and say “remind me about this” and it gets added to your Reminders app. You can also tell Siri when to remind you, if you’d like to set a specific time.
\n
Check out sports scores by asking Siri how your team did. You can ask “How did Notre Dame do yesterday?” or “What were last night’s NBA highlights?” Siri will give you the scores. You can even find rankings, what time and on what channel a sporting event is appearing, and more. Just ask!
\n
Let Siri end your calls for you; it comes in handy if you’re using headphones or earbuds and your phone is in your pocket. When you’re ready to end the call, simply say, “Hey, Siri, hang up” and you’re done. The only caveat is that the people you’re on the call with will hear you issue the command to Siri, but I don’t think they’ll mind.
\n
Open an app with a simple command. For example, say “Open Netflix.” The Netflix app will open (if it’s installed, of course).
\n
Convert measurements on the go. Ask something like “How many liters are in a gallon?” or “How many millimeters is 5.5 meters?” The inimitable Siri tells you in an instant.
\n
Tell Siri which song or artist you’d like to listen to, and it’ll happen. Say “Play Purple Rain” or “I’d like to listen to Fleetwood Mac.” The song or artist will begin playing. You could also say “Stop playing music” to pause the song.
\n
Siri can help you determine how much of a tip to leave your server. Say “How much is an 18 percent tip for a $34.36 bill?” Siri will promptly tell you to give $6.18.
\n
\n
There is much, much more that Siri can do. Try asking real-world questions whenever you get the chance so you can see the neat tricks Siri can perform.
\n"},{"title":"News and weather apps for your iPhone","thumb":null,"image":null,"content":"
The News and Weather apps in iOS 17 for the iPhone are both good, but may not suit your needs, or you may prefer the way some third-party apps works.
\n
News apps
\n
Numerous third-party news apps are news aggregators (pulling articles from several sources) or are developed by specific news outlets exclusively for their own content.
\n
Flipboard
\n
Flipboard is an all-in-one app for accessing news and information based on your personal interests. If you have a Netflix subscription, you can play the entire collection of videos that you’ve saved in your list, find new content, and even use AirPlay to play your video on your television via AppleTV.
\n
Overcast
\n
Apple’s Podcasts app in iOS 17 is good for downloading and listening to podcasts, but the Overcast app outshines it in ease-of-use and with intuitive settings. Overcast even lets you apply settings, such as playback speed and voice boost, to individual podcasts, maintaining different setting combinations for each.
\n
Pandora
\n
Pandora, one of the most popular music-streaming services for iOS, has been around almost since the first iPhone. Pandora allows you to create and customize your own radio stations, so you can play music of the same genre or by the same artist. You can also purchase any music you like with a direct link to the iTunes Store.
\n
SoundCloud
\n
SoundCloud claims to be the world’s largest music streaming service, boasting a catalogue of more than 135 million audio tracks. SoundCloud is a great service, but much of the catalogue is made up of up-and-coming (or completely unknown) artists. Don’t let that deter you. You can find some great music in the most unexpected places. SoundCloud also lets you see the music that your favorite artists like, which can lead you to discover wonderful tunes you might never have discovered otherwise.
\n
Snapseed
\n
Snapseed is a must-have tool for photographers of any level. It’s an editor that’s easy enough to be used by rookies, yet powerful enough that professional photographers won’t be caught without it.
\n
YouTube
\n
YouTube used to be the best app around for watching silly cat videos and people falling down, but it’s now one of the most popular, and important, means of accessing video and musical entertainment on the web. Documentaries, full-length movies, music videos, and silly cat videos are waiting to be discovered when you download the YouTube app for iOS.
\n"}],"videoInfo":{"videoId":null,"name":null,"accountId":null,"playerId":null,"thumbnailUrl":null,"description":null,"uploadDate":null}},"sponsorship":{"sponsorshipPage":false,"backgroundImage":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0},"brandingLine":"","brandingLink":"","brandingLogo":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0},"sponsorAd":"","sponsorEbookTitle":"","sponsorEbookLink":"","sponsorEbookImage":{"src":null,"width":0,"height":0}},"primaryLearningPath":"Explore","lifeExpectancy":"Two years","lifeExpectancySetFrom":"2023-10-31T00:00:00+00:00","dummiesForKids":"no","sponsoredContent":"no","adInfo":"","adPairKey":[]},"status":"publish","visibility":"public","articleId":288640},{"headers":{"creationTime":"2022-11-02T15:26:03+00:00","modifiedTime":"2023-10-31T16:48:10+00:00","timestamp":"2023-10-31T18:01:08+00:00"},"data":{"breadcrumbs":[{"name":"Technology","_links":{"self":"https://dummies-api.dummies.com/v2/categories/33512"},"slug":"technology","categoryId":33512},{"name":"Software","_links":{"self":"https://dummies-api.dummies.com/v2/categories/33618"},"slug":"software","categoryId":33618},{"name":"Money Management Software","_links":{"self":"https://dummies-api.dummies.com/v2/categories/33653"},"slug":"money-management-software","categoryId":33653},{"name":"QuickBooks","_links":{"self":"https://dummies-api.dummies.com/v2/categories/33656"},"slug":"quickbooks","categoryId":33656}],"title":"QuickBooks 2024 All-in-One For Dummies Cheat Sheet","strippedTitle":"quickbooks 2024 all-in-one for dummies cheat sheet","slug":"quickbooks-2023-all-in-one-for-dummies-cheat-sheet","canonicalUrl":"","seo":{"metaDescription":"Your day-to-day use of QuickBooks 2024 will go a lot smoother and quicker if you know a handful of these tricks and keyboard shortcuts.","noIndex":0,"noFollow":0},"content":"QuickBooks 2024 makes small-business accounting fast and easy. Big Data Beyond Boundaries: Unstructured Data Orchestration

Article / Updated 12-01-2023

Getting the most out of your unstructured data is an essential task for any organization these days, especially when considering the disparate storage systems, applications, and user locations. So, it’s not an accident that data orchestration is the term that brings everything together. Bringing all your data together shares similarities with conducting an orchestra. Because each operated independently, the data within each system was siloed making it a problem collaborating with data sets over multiple locations. Collaboration was possible, but too often you lost the ability to have high performance. This Boolean logic decreased potential because having an IT architecture that supported both high performance and collaboration with data sets from different storage silos typically became an either/or decision: You were forced to choose one but never both. What is data orchestration? Data orchestration is the automated process of taking siloed data from multiple data storage systems and locations, combining and organizing it into a single namespace. Then a high-performance file system can place data in the edge service, data center, or cloud service most optimal for the workload. The recent rise of data analytic applications and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities has accelerated the use of data across different locations and even different organizations. In the next data cycle, organizations will need both high-performance and agility with their data to compete and thrive in a competitive environment. That means data no longer has a 1:1 relationship with the applications and compute environment that generated it. It needs to be used, analyzed, and repurposed with different AI models and alternate workloads, and across a remote, collaborative environment. Control of enterprise data services for governance, security, data protection, and compliance can now be implemented globally at a file-granular level across all storage types and locations. Applications and AI models can access data stored in remote locations while using automated orchestration tools to provide high-performance local access when needed for processing. Organizations can grow their talent pools with access to team members no matter where they reside. Decentralizing the data center Data collection has become more prominent, and the traditional system of centralized data management has limitations. Issues of centralized data storage can limit the amount of data available to applications. Then, there are the high infrastructure costs when multiple applications are needed to manage and move data, multiple copies of data are retained in different storage systems, and more headcount is needed to manage the complex, disconnected infrastructure environment. Such setbacks suggest that the data center is no longer the center of data and storage system constraints should no longer define data architectures. Hammerspace specializes in decentralized environments, where data may need to span two or more sites and possibly one or more cloud providers and regions, and/or where a remote workforce needs to collaborate in real time. It enables a global data environment by providing a unified, parallel global file system. Enabling a global data environment Hammerspace completely revolutionizes previously held notions of how unstructured data architectures should be designed, delivering the performance needed across distributed environments to Free workloads from data silos. Eliminate copy proliferation. Provide direct data access through local metadata to applications and users, no matter where the data is stored. This technology allows organizations to take full advantage of the performance capabilities of any server, storage system, and network anywhere in the world. This capability enables a unified, fast, and efficient global data environment for the entire workflow, from data creation to processing, collaboration, and archiving across edge devices, data centers, and public and private clouds. The days of enterprises struggling with a siloed, distributed, and inefficient data environment are over. It’s time to start expecting more from data architectures with automated data orchestration. General AI Five Ways Machine Health Delivers Real Business Value

Article / Updated 12-01-2023

We depend on machines to produce everyday essentials — such as power, food, and medicine — and to support nearly every aspect of society. Thus, machine health is vital to overall manufacturing and business health. Machine health transforms reliability, maintenance, operations, and asset performance management by using artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to improve performance, reduce downtime, and help manufacturers reach Industry 4.0 standards. Transform the way you work In an era of labor shortages and technology innovation, manufacturing needs to move faster toward digitization. Using AI in manufacturing, companies can eliminate repetitive tasks, reduce inefficiencies, and strengthen data-driven decision making. With insights into the real-time condition of their machines, workers can break away from traditional maintenance schedules and manual tasks. This means more time for proactive work and collaboration with other departments, which leads to stronger cross-functional teams. It also leads to further innovations, such as process optimization. When employees have insights into the health of their machines, they can predict their workdays and own their schedules, opening up new opportunities for innovation and engagement. Learn more about transforming the way you work with machine health at www.augury.com/use-cases/business-goal/transform-the-way-you-work. Eliminate unnecessary downtime Unplanned downtime can be expensive. There’s the cost of the repairs themselves, lost production and sales, and reputational damage. Maintenance and reliability teams often have to scramble to diagnose and fix the problem as quickly as possible — often resulting in overtime pay and expedited shipping costs for emergency spare parts. Sudden and catastrophic machine failures can also harm worker morale and jeopardize worker safety. Thus, reducing unnecessary downtime has a significant impact on both your top and bottom lines. Learn more about eliminating unnecessary downtime with machine health at www.augury.com/use-cases/business-goal/eliminate-unnecessary-downtime. Reduce loss, waste, and emissions Reducing waste to improve sustainability has become a top priority for manufacturers for cost-cutting/efficiency purposes, as well as to promote a healthier planet. Healthy machines can run at capacity and with less downtime, leading to less waste and more efficient energy use. An industry study by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) found that optimizing the performance of rotating assets — which account for approximately 54 percent of U.S. industrial electricity consumption — can reduce energy consumption by 12 to 15 percent. Learn more about reducing loss, waste, and emissions with machine health at www.augury.com/use-cases/business-goal/reduce-loss-waste-and-emissions. Maximize yield and capacity Real-time machine health insights allow maintenance teams to adjust shutdown schedules based on the current condition of the machine, its history, and the recommendations of experts. In the longer-term, machine health minimizes unplanned downtime by improving the health of your machines, reduces planned downtime by deferring nonessential maintenance activities, and can increase output on production lines with healthier machines running optimally. Learn more about maximizing yield and capacity with machine health at www.augury.com/use-cases/business-goal/maximize-yield-and-capacity. Optimize asset care When it comes to asset care — from acquiring and storing parts to managing maintenance resources — manufacturers have traditionally taken a more preventive than predictive approach: Machines are serviced on fixed schedules, regardless of whether or not they need maintenance. Machine health empowers you to control how you spend time and money based on the real-time condition of your machine assets. Learn more about optimizing asset care with machine health at www.augury.com/use-cases/business-goal/optimize-asset-care.
