Statement
In my early years, I worked numerous jobs to make a living. There is nothing too unusual for a young person to do whatever they have to do in order to survive. I worked as a dynamiter in a rock quarry, a dump truck driver, a construction worker, a door-to-door salesman in three states, and once as house sitter for a lobster fisherman on tiny island in the Caribbean. No matter what I did to make a living, I was taking visual notes to prepare me for my future career as a fine artist, photographer, writer, arts educator, and graphic designer.I think I can safely say that readers of Design Observer are for the most part, visual people. As architects, designers, city planners, fine artists, writers, and thinkers from all aspects of the creative continuum, you come to Design Observer for the content it delivers daily. I am quite proud to be a part of this incredible group of people.
My blog deals head on with vast amount of visual material that is available to us today. Libraries, public and private collections, and museums across the globe are digitizing the famous and forgotten, the large and the small. What a pleasure it is to discover an obscure Renaissance object in Milan, a rare illustrated manuscript from Berlin, shoe designs from the 16th century, or an archive of 1950s advertising in Indianapolis. My joy is in the discovery, and sharing that with the international audiences of Design Observer. After all, you wouldn't be here if you weren't at least slightly curious to see what might be behind the curtain by a simple click of your mouse.
The only way for me to find this material is to look, and that means several hours each week bouncing from one cryptic idea and place to another. Like a walk in the woods where veering off the trail is encouraged, it's no wonder I occasionally get lost, which is my ultimate plan. That is when I find the odd and beautiful.
Deep into the rabbit hole of visual objects, this blog is my curated attempt to highlight just a fraction of what I find and pick up along the way. I hope you look forward to my discoveries, which I present to you each Friday. Think of this blog as your weekend treat.
Thanks for being a part.
