Nonprofits account for 12.3 million jobs, 10.2 percent of private sector employment, in 2016

There were nearly 12.3 million jobs in nonprofit organizations in 2016. That was 10.2 percent of total U.S. private sector employment. The District of Columbia had the highest percentage of nonprofit employment, 26.0 percent. Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, and Rhode Island also had high shares of nonprofit employment.

Share of employment in professional and business services at all-time high of 14 percent in 2017
In 2017, the share of total nonfarm employment in professional and business services (14.0 percent), education and health services (15.8 percent), and leisure and hospitality (10.9 percent) reached their largest on record. All three industries recorded their lowest share of total nonfarm employment in 1943, the year in which the share of total nonfarm employment in manufacturing was at its highest on record.

Asian women and men earned more than their White, Black, and Hispanic counterparts in 2017
Asian women and men earned more than their White, Black, and Hispanic counterparts in 2017. Among women, Whites ($795) earned 88 percent as much as Asians ($903); Blacks ($657) earned 73 percent; and Hispanics ($603) earned 67 percent. Among men, these earnings differences were even larger: White men ($971) earned 80 percent as much as Asian men ($1,207); Black men ($710) earned 59 percent as much; and Hispanic men ($690), 57 percent.

Back injuries prominent in work-related musculoskeletal disorder cases in 2016
Musculoskeletal disorders are injuries or illnesses that result from overexertion or repetitive motion. They include soft-tissue injuries such as sprains, strains, tears, hernias, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders that result in days away from work most commonly involve the back alone. In 2016, musculoskeletal disorders involving the back accounted for 38.5 percent of all work-related musculoskeletal disorders (134,550 back cases out of 349,050 total cases).

Golf anyone? A look at golf courses and country clubs by state
Whether you belong to a country club or go to a public golf course, playing golf can be a year-round hobby or an annual outing with friends. States where golf courses and country clubs are prevalent are ideal homes for avid golfers. Nationwide, in December 2017, the golf courses and country clubs industry employed 307,000 in 11,100 establishments. Florida had the highest location quotient, at 2.7 times the national average.
