Note that these are the LAST releases for the 5.6 and 7.0 branches. Also, PHP 7.1 is now security only.

Why there are no releases for PHP 6?
-
PHP 6 knows what it did.

-
And just in case you were asking seriously: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PHP#PHP_6_and_Unicode … TL;DR - There is no PHP 6, and never will be.
-
is it a trend to skip version number..? ;D
-
I'm not saying Microsoft copied us, but the Windows 9 skip DID happen shortly after we killed PHP 6.
-
I see. The same applies to Apple and its iPhone 9, amirite?

Daaaayummmm. For a moment I thought that I had successfully travelled back in time to when PHP 5 was released.

-
I'll confess, I kinda wanted to kick out a new version of PHP 5.5 just so I could say "PHP 6 Released!"
-
BTW, what happened to PHP 6?

7.0 is the latest available php in the latest stable Debian. And this is EOL?
-
PHP release cadence and LTS distro release cadence needs a bit of a rethink.
-
Yes always has been a issue.
-
So... what are we supposed to do about that from a practical perspective? It's more important that my OS is stable and tested, but I run a web server where the PHP version is "obsolete"?
-
It's not obsolete. It's just not maintained by THIS particular group of unpaid volunteers anymore. And why should Debian's LTS be the one we align with? Why not Ubuntu? Or slackware? RHEL still has 5.4 or something ridiculous like that. Should PHP be issuing 5.4 fixes in 2018?
-
The core issue is the support lifecycle mismatch: PHP - 3 years. NodeJS - 3 years. Python - 5 years (ish) Debian/Ubuntu - 5 years. RHEL/CentOS - 10 years. This mismatch leads to a stagnation effect as applications and users target distro versions not PHP versions.
-
Again, if the distros want longer cycles, they can do the maintenance. As to people targetting older versions, that's wouldn't be helped by lengthening PHP's cycle. That would only be helped by shortening distro cycles.
-
This relates to the deployment contexts. Enterprise application lifecycles are often very long unlike cloud. These environments need to change mindset on release management, but then so do their suppliers (often off the shelf apps). The Wordpress example is a good one.
