The Potomac River /pəˈtoʊmək/ is located along the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States and flows into the Chesapeake Bay. The river (main stem and North Branch) is approximately 405 miles (652 km) long, with a drainage area of about 14,700 square miles (38,000 km²). In terms of area, this makes the Potomac River the fourth largest river along the Atlantic coast of the United States and the 21st largest in the United States. Over 5 million people live within the Potomac watershed.
The river forms part of the borders between Maryland and Washington, D.C., on the left descending bank and West Virginia and Virginia on the river's right descending bank. The majority of the lower Potomac River is part of the State of Maryland. Exceptions include a small tidal portion within the District of Columbia, and the border with Virginia being delineated from "point to point" (thus various bays and shoreline indentations lie in Virginia). Except for a small portion of its headwaters in West Virginia, the North Branch Potomac River is considered part of Maryland to the low water mark on the opposite bank. The South Branch Potomac River lies completely within the state of West Virginia except for its headwaters, which lie in Virginia.

A river is a natural flowing watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, sea, lake or another river. In some cases a river flows into the ground and becomes dry at the end of its course without reaching another body of water. Small rivers can be referred to using names such as stream, creek, brook, rivulet, and rill. There are no official definitions for the generic term river as applied to geographic features, although in some countries or communities a stream is defined by its size. Many names for small rivers are specific to geographic location; examples are "run" in some parts of the United States, "burn" in Scotland and northeast England, and "beck" in northern England. Sometimes a river is defined as being larger than a creek, but not always: the language is vague.
Rivers are part of the hydrological cycle. Water generally collects in a river from precipitation through a drainage basin from surface runoff and other sources such as groundwater recharge, springs, and the release of stored water in natural ice and snowpacks (e.g. from glaciers). Potamology is the scientific study of rivers while limnology is the study of inland waters in general.
FLW, also known as Fishing League Worldwide, is the sanctioning organization for a series of bass fishing tournament tours, the best known being the WalMart FLW Tour.
The organization's initials are taken from Forrest L. Wood, founder of Ranger Boats and developer of the Ranger fishing boat. The top tournament on the FLW Tour, the Forrest Wood Cup, is also named for Wood. In 2007, the tournament was the first to offer a $1 million prize for the winner.
The FLW Tour was created by businessman Irwin L. Jacobs, owner of Genmar, the world's largest manufacturer of recreational boats (including Ranger, Wood's former company). Jacobs bought a small fishing-tournament promotion company based in Gilbertsville, Kentucky, United States, and renamed the company's tour as the FLW Tour. Jacobs' plan was to turn the tour into the object of major media coverage, with larger cash prizes, a television-friendly competition format, and sponsorships from well-known corporations from outside the fishing industry. Jacobs promptly signed the biggest company of them all — WalMart — which became the title sponsor for the FLW Tour, which was the first such sponsorship in the giant retailer's history. The tour went without Walmart as a title sponsor in 2010, but the retailer signed a new deal that restored the title sponsorship beginning in 2011. That same day, Jacobs also announced that legendary oilman and investor T. Boone Pickens had taken an equity stake and a partnership in the company.

Each of us is connected to rivers in our everyday lives. Most of the six million people living in the Potomac River watershed do not realize that their drinking water comes from the Potomac. Since the Clean Water Act passed in 1972, the health of the river has improved. However, it is still in trouble and faces a number of serious threats: urban development, population growth and runoff from farms, pharmaceuticals and chemicals. The film follows the flow of the Potomac water from its origin, into our homes and businesses and back into the river. We become aware of the need to protect this essential resource and of how our wellbeing and that of future generations is intertwined with the health of the Potomac. The weather was perfect for a day of bass fishing on the upper Potomac River!!! Matt from SBFISHINGTV and I teamed up and went after whatever the Big Slackwater area of the Potomac had to offer. Bass fishing for smallmouth and largemouth was my mission & Matt was prepared to cast for muskie! There were no muskie to be found this day, but 6 different species of Potomac River fish were caught during this awesome day on the water. THANKS FOR WATCHING!!! I know 99.9% of you already know it, but check out Jon's Channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI6gB6eZS0c3ZrjcJq7xAtA What up! Had the opportunity to fish with Young Plugg himself yesterday out on the Potomac River. I really wanted to get on a cold water bite in the city, looking for schooled up smallmouth around the bridge pylons and Kennedy Center wall, but the water was super dirty so we ran down to Blue Plains. The water temps were 10 degrees warmer, and the water had great clarity so we busted out the crankbaits, jerkbaits and jigs. The fishing was awesome - ended up with 6 bass, best 5 fish went around 16 lbs anchored by a 5.68 lb chunk, and a giant blue cat. My footage doesn't do his fish justice, so go check out Jon's video for that one. Overall an awesome day, and in Janu...

Air Florida Flight 90 leaves Washington National Airport in Arlington County, Virginia, for Miami with 79 passengers and crew on board. The Boeing 737–200 has been delayed for hours by bad weather conditions, allowing ice to build up and disrupt the airflow over the wings. Seconds after getting airborne, the aircraft stalls and crashes into the 14th Street Bridge. It bounces off and slams into the icy Potomac river. Five people are rescued, but 78 lose their lives, four of them motorists on the bridge.
