They provide the opportunities, the jobs. If they're cut off, then we're going to see a much higher rate of unemployment, and basically the real economy going into deep recession." Two female senior citizens listening to presentation STORYLINE: The financial turmoil in the stock markets is having a direct impact on small businesses in the United States, where it is becoming increasingly difficult to start new commercial projects. Roger Bhatti, who owns a small printing business in Arlington, Texas, said he used to be able to secure a seven-figure loan from a bank within a matter of days, whereas now it takes them months to put a project together. Bhatti hopes a Wall Street rescue package will help, but thinks Washington is focusing on the wrong types of businesses. "Instead of taking care of big business, now, we have learned, we need to take care of small business. That is where the American economy is. That is where we are going to make this country grow," he told AP Television News. Finance Professor Campbell Harvery at Duke University says small businesses will feel the pinch of the tight credit market the most. Harvey said that they are the drivers of growth in the economy, especially as they provide the opportunities and the jobs. Meanwhile on Monday, senior citizens in retirement pondered the chances of their money being there for them in the long term.
