The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is an American independent nonprofit organization, based in New York City, New York, that promotes press freedom and defends the rights of journalists. The American Journalism Review has called the organization "Journalism's Red Cross".
A group of U.S. foreign correspondents founded the organization in 1981 in response to harassment from authoritarian governments.
According to the organization's 2011 Annual Report, financial supporters include individuals, corporations, and foundations. The report does not include details on the largest financial supporters. Corporate media donors include the Associated Press, CNBC, CNN and Fox News.
The committee organizes public protests and works through diplomatic channels to effect change. It publishes articles, news releases and special reports. Between 2002 and 2008, it published a biannual magazine, Dangerous Assignments. It also publishes an annual worldwide survey of press freedom called Attacks on the Press.
Donald John Trump, Sr. (born June 14, 1946) is an American businessperson and media personality. He is the chairman and president of The Trump Organization and the founder of Trump Entertainment Resorts. Trump's career, branding efforts, personal life, wealth, and outspoken manner have made him famous throughout the country. Since 2015, he is also a candidate for the Republican nomination for President of the United States in the 2016 election.
Trump is a native of New York City and a son of Fred Trump, who inspired him to enter real estate development. After two years at Fordham University and while studying at Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Trump worked for his father's firm, Elizabeth Trump & Son. Upon graduating in 1968 he joined the company, and in 1971 was given control, renaming the company "The Trump Organization". Since then he has built hotels, golf courses, and other properties, many of which bear his name. He is a major figure in the American business scene and has received prominent media exposure. The NBC reality show The Apprentice bolstered his fame, and his three marriages were extensively reported in tabloids.

Born in London, England, Amanpour was raised in Tehran. Her father Mahmoud Amanpour is a Muslim from Iran; her mother Patricia is a Christian from England. She is fluent in English and Persian.
After completing the larger part of her elementary education in Iran, she was sent by her parents to boarding school in England when she was 11. She attended Holy Cross Convent, an all-girls school located in Chalfont St. Peter, Buckinghamshire, and then, at age 16, New Hall School, in Chelmsford, Essex. Christiane and her family returned to England not long after the Islamic Revolution began. She has stressed that they were not forced to leave the country, but were actually returning to England due to the Iran–Iraq War. The family ultimately remained in England, finding it difficult to return to Iran.

http://www.democracynow.org - In its first report on press freedom in the United States, the Committee to Protect Journalists warns President Obama has ushered in a paralyzing climate of fear for both reporters and their government sources. Among the cases it details: Six government employees -- plus two contractors, including Edward Snowden -- have faced felony criminal prosecutions since 2009 under the 1917 Espionage Act for leaking classified information to the press, compared just three such prosecutions in all previous U.S. administrations. The Department of Justice has also secretly subpoenaed and seized Associated Press reporter's phone logs and emails, and New York Times reporter James Risen was ordered to testify against a former CIA officer who provided leaked information to him,...

United Nations, 10 February 2009 - The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), is launching its annual report "Attacks on the Press". Joel Simon, CPJ Executive Director is introducing the report. In 2008, the numbers of journalists killed and jailed both dropped for the first time since the war on terror was launched in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. This is welcome news, but it is tempered by harsh realities. The war on terror had a devastating effect on journalists, and the trends will be difficult to reverse. Over seven years, journalists were targeted for murder in record numbers, while deterioration in the international legal environment led to a surge in journalist imprisonments. Natural Sound A Turkish court on Thursday sentenced five policemen to seven and a half years in prison for the fatal beating of a 27-year-old journalist under detention. A three-judge panel convicted the officers of killing journalist Metin Goktepe in January 1996 by kicking, punching and beating him with truncheons. Six other police officers linked to the case were acquitted. The trial was seen as a test of the Turkish government's promise to crack down on torture and abuses by security forces. The body of Metin Goktepe body was found in an Istanbul park the day after he and hundreds of other people were detained during a funeral for prisoners killed in jail riots. Goktepe, who worked for the now-defunct Istanbul daily 'Everensel' was beaten to death by the police ...

Following the Egyptian army's decision to close three Islamist television channels - Egypt 25, al-Hafiz and al-Nas, international media watchdogs including the New York-based "Committee to Protect Journalists" immediately raised concerns over media plurality and freedom.
United Nations, New York, March 2012 - Recent global events have highlighted the fact that journalists and media workers reporting on human rights issues are particularly vulnerable to threats and attacks, an independent United Nations expert said today, calling for greater protection for those who carry out such vital work. "Because of the potential impact on society that journalists and media workers can have by disseminating information about human rights through a wide array of media, those individuals are often threatened, wounded and killed in an attempt to silence their voices," stated Margaret Sekaggya, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders. Internet activists and human rights groups are criticizing an order that requires blogs and social media sites in Vietnam to share personal information only. The order aims to ban social media users and bloggers from posting other information such as news stories. Local media reports say the decree states that such sites are not permitted to quote, gather or summarize information from press organizations or government websites.Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung approved Decree 72 in July.Internet activists say this is an attempt by the communist government to restrict freedom of speech. Rights groups say the decree's requirements are too broad and will be used to act against government critics. Others criticized a statement by Le Nam Thang, the deputy minister of information and communications...
