What is wrong with these modern applications? (programming)

submitted 6 days ago by roznak to programming (+11|-0)

What is wrong with these modern applications?

They are buggy, they are irritating, they are slooooooow, they are prone to making users press mistakes, they require enormous amount of swipes, button presses and these modern applications are hurting my eyes.

And also for some reason they try to guess what I want. But by guessing what I want it gives me this upper crap that I don't want just like these irritating spell checkers that always choose the wrong words.

And did I mention buggy? Every update the applications gets more and more buggy.

Is no one out there actually asking the question if that cool app they design is utter crap? Is no one out there asking the question if the numerous repetitive swipes causes crippling muscle strain that will last for generations?

I was looking around for STEM learning materials and ran across CodeCombat. Anyone else have any experience/thoughts about it? (programming)

https://codecombat.com

I was looking at Christmas gifts and found a bunch of STEM learning toys that even I was tempted to buy for myself. That lead me into looking at engineering and programming games, when I found CodeCombat. I think it's an awesome idea, like a beefed up Karl the Robot. Teaches general programming in multiple languages, with a few sections for Web Design and Game Design.

Going through it now and it's helped me with a few things, still struggle with some pretty basic concepts. But it's also a bit too much like CodeCademy, where I can copy/paste too much code. Hopefully it gets a bit more on your own later on. Still a cool way to teach the concepts to future programmers.

Anyone have experience with teaching material like this? Also looking for something to help understand electrical engineering and robotics in a more controlled environment (can't fry components with fuck-ups)

X-post: What is a 'good' programmer? (programming)

submitted 19 days ago by IsaacJan to programming (+14|-0)

(Posting this here as well, would genuinely like input), this is in response to a comment I just read. "Colleges are pumping out shitty coders by the hundreds."

I'm trying to become a programmer. What exactly makes a programmer shitty? Why is it bad to get a degree with the intent to be a programmer?

What exactly do I need to do to not be a shitty programmer? I'd appreciate some answers, because broadly labeling college graduates trying to be programmers shitty is confusing me right now. What is the difference, what do I have to do to be a 'good' programmer?
