So, I had an abortion the other day. Among other things, my experience made me realize just how supremely fucked up these fetal heartbeat bills really are.

P.S. I feel a bit nervous and exposed tweeting about my abortion (which just shows how much I've internalized the hush-hush culture around it). But abortion is NORMAL. And restrictive laws like these ignore women's realities so thoroughly. #shoutyourabortion

I live in abortion-friendly NYC, can afford it, and made my decision literally 1 day after my missed period. If I had to wait that long for an abortion, how the fuck are women supposed to plan for theirs under heartbeat laws???

These bills are cruel, disingenuous, evil mindfucks and are designed to send an ominous message, even if they do get struck down by federal judges. Iowa's did, but Florida and Ohio are next. The goal is the Supreme Court.

we don’t talk enough about how it doesn’t fucking matter what random ppl think about abortion cutoffs, bc most ppl are not doctors and have no idea how it works or why someone would seek a 20-week abortion! it’s deeply weird to me to poll voters about medical procedures

Finally I went in for my abortion at almost 6.5 weeks pregnant. A heartbeat can often be detected at 6 weeks. Under one of these laws, it could have been too late.

I meticulously chart my cycles, so I knew I was pregnant right away. At 4.5 weeks I went to my gyno and was told it was TOO early for an abortion—they couldn't yet see anything on the ultrasound.

even carmela soprano knew that the legal way to do this was to donate $$$ to Columbia and strong-arm her neighbor while preserving plausible deniability

anyway i can’t with bloodless centrist pundits who are like “let’s consider a 15 week limit as a compromise, it’s what most ppl want” who cares what these ignorant randos theoretically want, we are talking about real people with real pregnancies

A 1977 line from my mom Ellen Willis that I’ve been repeating in my head. One of the few quotations I’ve seen that gives equal weight to hope and reality.

like, a lot of people feel comfy with first trimester abortions but not second trimester? ok but they have zero idea what they’re talking about!

been thinking abt this passage by my mom, ellen willis, on a 1969 abortion speakout. poverty stories are trump-era class consciousness, but women's sexual autobiographies are still deemed TMI, even by some progressives, 50 goddamn years later

it's so peaceful and refreshing to turn off my mentions to only ppl i follow, maybe i should do it even when i'm not getting a deluge of anti-choice (and super-off-topic anti-semitic??) tweets

to me, the most unassailable pro-choice framing is desired pregnancy-as-generosity, undesired pregnancy-as-invasion. here's my mom Ellen Willis (left) and Sally Rooney (right) on consensual pregnancy

some guy just hit on me by swiping me into the subway with his unlimited metrocard like "girl ur so beautiful, your ride is on me." as a pay-per-ride customer i found this incredibly romantic!!

The deepest saddest irony I’ve felt in a while is grappling with how much Amazon has made life easier for my disabled 85-year-old father, a former factory worker and union organizer...

I really liked the millennial burnout article but let's remember that there's a HUGE swath of poor millennials that have a very different experience, esp. when it comes to work "optimization"...

wish there were a better cultural language for the indeterminate care of a sick/dying parent. ppl get it when you say “my parent died” but i freeze up when i have to be like “my dad is old and ill and needs me, could be a day could be a year”

Poor young ppl deal w a diff kind of burnout, what Richard Sennett and Jonathan Cobb called their “hidden injuries” in 1972--the heartbreak they feel when institutions fail them again and again

About 1 out of 50 pregnancies are ectopic - outside the uterus. If you have a D&C or take the abortion pill w/o verifying an intrauterine pregnancy and it IS an ectopic, you could assume you are not pregnant and ignore the signs of a ruptured ectopic, which is life threatening.

i'm really enjoying the fact that WAP stood for Women Against Pornography in the '70s. one day there's gonna be a wikipedia disambiguation that's like "WAP may also refer to: -the sanctimonious misguided anti-porn group -the 2020 pussy anthem"

Many poor millennials remain in low-wage non-unionized jobs and don't have BAs (but might still have debt from a few semesters of college). This hasn't changed now that the economy has "recovered." It hasn't changed for decades.

my 2019 was entirely freelance! it was feast-or-famine to the max, and VERY hard to do while writing a book proposal. here's the work im most proud of and, in the spirit of raising standards, what i got paid (thx to for the idea)

Remember when Dubya beamed proudly when he called the woman who held down 3 shitty jobs “uniquely american”? That’s how you look when you celebrate 2 hourlong lines by saying you’re proud of the turnout. This means the system is broken. Nothing to be proud of.

lol the whole point of that show is that white straight men were casual bigots in the 60s?? if you need that title card what do you think Mad Men is

in the shadow of the clearest victory yet for heartbeat bills, re-upping this thread on how it's often LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE to get an abortion before 6 weeks

for the last time: “6 weeks pregnant” means 4 weeks after conception. 2 weeks after a missed period. any heartbeat bill reporting that doesn’t clarify is irresponsible and inaccurate.

why don’t conservatives understand that the singlehood upswing is deeply connected to ppl (esp women) being less willing to put up with BAD sex/relationships!
Quote Tweet
Replying to @DouthatNYT
But there's also a pretty-clearly-integrated conservative story of what's happening here, which is that hook-up culture itself is part of what leads to less sex, because it leads to fewer monogamous relationships. Maximal liberation = less actual intercourse.
