i do not wish to participate in the “j school: is it bad?” discourse atm but i WOULD like to make an ADJACENT observation which is that i always knew this industry was for rich people but it wasn’t until i had to start freelancing that i experienced the extent of that firsthand

Hey next time journalism twitter goes off on j-schools (so in like, two months) can we talk about a relevant issue like how many of these schools lack representation in their staff thus making it a little harder for reporters of color to feel comfortable in the business?

This sentiment is gaslighting and erasing the violence of the fossil fuel industry on the bodies of human beings. Asthma, cancer, disease, death: these are also fossil fuel exports.

I haven’t jumped into this conversation because I haven’t had anything original to say — just a lot of anger and sadness. says what I have not been able to: That this type of antisemitism is not really about the Jews.

Editing tip of the day: You can almost always axe "there is" or "there are" from a sentence. Before: "There are two types of rising air currents that provide most lift for soaring eagles." After: "Two types of rising air currents provide most lift for soaring eagles."

Jerome Stanley, a 64-year-old Boston school bus driver, walked into housing court one day last fall trying to stay in a Roxbury apartment he had called home for 27 years. His new landlords wanted to raise his rent by nearly 70 percent. (1/x)

Recycling is one of the biggest lies cities in America ever sold us. This story is happening EVERYWHERE. This is why we need to reduce consumption and stop pretending we're helping by buying tons of plastic and "recycling" it.

This morning I got choked up on air when discussing the political reluctance to be bold on climate change. It’s never happened to me before, but there’s no precedent for the threat we are facing.

Basic takeaway: the money exists if we find good ways to raise it. A gas tax in exchange for better public transit? That’s a good exchange in my book. Yay, Minnesota! I can’t wait to come home.

Of course, we’re still waiting for legislative approval — that budget increase comes with a 1/8cent sales tax increase in the 7-county metro area and a 20cent gas tax increase statewide. Woohoo, money!

Now here’s where the budget comes in. Electric buses are more expensive than diesel — $1.2mil for a 60-foot electric bus vs $300,000-700,000 for diesel. ’s transportation package is $324mil, including new routes & more frequent service.

There hasn’t been much media coverage of Duluth’s buses since then, but they’re supposedly back on the roads. THEN, started wanting a bit of the action and announced their plan for Mpls last December:

Duluth is also in northern Minnesota, a good three hours from the Twin Cities. That means it gets a lot colder a lot sooner, and the electric onboard heaters were significantly draining the buses’ battery life. The bus company created a software patch to fix it.

But the buses were pulled from the roads a few weeks later because of onboard heat issues and braking on hills. If you don’t know Duluth — it’s a giant hill. So, that’s an issue. It was all precautionary, but definitely unfortunate.

(I also wanna say this is the most accurate portrayal of Minnesotans being excited about a thing. Please read it. Phil Pumphrey from says the buses look like whales. And, I looked it up. They do! A great article from )

But it really came alive this past fall. Their first electric bus began running in November:

Anyway, back to the unveiling of ’s first electric bus, with a bigger fleet coming. Duluth was the first city (about 90k residents) to begin an electric bus fleet. They began discussing it almost a year ago in March 2018:
