    in 1972 Shirley Chisholm became the first African American Presidential nominee, with 151 votes from the delegates polled. Chisholm did not win the Democratic nomination, but she did win an impressive 10 percent of the votes within the party.

    55 years ago, former President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights of 1964, which outlawed discrimination based on race, ethnicity, religion or gender; Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were in attendance during the signing.
