It was s matter of time. Replacing people with automation comes down to a matter of Greed. If Uber was more concerned about Humans being able to support themselves rather than lining the pockets of a few, this would not have happened.

A tragic accident happened. We don’t even know the details, so how can u even blame the technology? Just two weeks ago in NYC, a lady ran a red light and killed two children crossing in a crosswalk.
-
Following the logic of those saying the program should be stopped, perhaps they will respond to the accident you mentioned by demanding all women be stopped from driving.

So tell me
@Uber_Comms. WHAT'S THE NEED FOR FOR SELF DRIVING CARS? other than cutting people out of making money. There is no need for self driving cars. This could have been avoided by having a person behind the wheel. You just took someone's loved one. -
One of the largest needs for autonomous vehicles is because humans are terrible drivers. While computer systems aren't flawless they are MUCH more accurate than humans and also don't get distracted by texting, looking at signs on the side of the road, or suffer from road rage.

Although very sad situation. In the end it is the fault of the pedestrian, they make crosswalks for a reason. That's why it's illegal to jaywalk.
-
Do you know what happens to a regular driver if they run over a pedestrian (in city or residential road), regardless of the traffic light, pedestrian zone etc? Their life would be ruined financially and legally, on top of the loss of life of the pedestrian.
-
It is IMPERATIVE for driverless cars to have HUMAN IDENTICAL reactions, REGARDLESS of circumstances. Otherwise they should keep testing them in the desert with only cacti around. This is not just some bug in a mobile app, human life is at stake...
-
And humans should use the crosswalks. It's your life you are risking
-
No question about that. But two things: 1- if the car had a human driver, s/he’d suffer VERY serious legal consequences. 2- Even though the pedestrian didn’t use the crosswalk, loss of life could’ve been prevented with a human driver. That requires human perception and reasoning.
-
Also it’s not like the pedestrian jumped on the highway. She just didn’t use the crosswalk. There’s a reason why the speedlimits in residential areas are much lower than highways. You as a human driver, would not decide on not pushing the brakes if you saw someone on the road...

These self-driving things will just never pan out. People enjoy their FREEDOM and SAFETY too much. Stop this shit. You're now murdering people by way of auto mode? No! I feel so awful for this fallen female and her family...
-
I trust a computer to drive over you any day. Stop trolling.
-
No trolling; only truth-telling. Also, it's not just a "computer" that had a part in this. There was a person behind the wheel...as I'm sure you already know. These self-driving situations will cause even more laziness in people. And that's the last fucking thing we need.
-
You don't second guess a calculator, do you? We actually DO need people to be lazy and stop driving. Computers can do trillions of calculations a second, humans? One? This is a tragedy to be sure, but automating driving is still the best way to lower traffic fatalities.
-
Furthermore, good luck getting everybody on board with giving up their driving privileges. I honestly don't see a world where it's all automated. And people shouldn't be lazy. Ever. How's that a good thing? We do not need more of that, so you're wrong. Incredibly wrong!
-
Except the calculator reference IS important, because computers operate on basic calculations. Your mouse is moving? Your computer is crunching numbers to make that happen. The plane your in (autopilot!) is still flying? Computers! People should not drive. Computers should.

So who gets the ticket?
-
The person in the driver's seat should be arrested & charged with vehicular manslaughter
-
what about the software coding team, company and vehicle manufacturer. all should be held responsable
