    Good to see some strong German language (and not only from Tom Enders) in favour of a Schmidt-Debré like defence export regime between France and Germany. This was a big issue for Macron in the discussions upstream of the Aachen Treaty

    , signed Treaty of Aachen to expand & strenghten bilateral ties and boost cooperation. My take on & why a new bilateral Schmidt-Debré like arms agreement is needed to make joint projects possible.

    Je viens de faire l'effort de lire le traité d'Aix-la-Chapelle (dix minutes quand même), un texte qui ne marquera pas l'histoire, sinon comme révélateur du niveau de "n'importe quoi" de notre débat politique.

    The franco-german treaties of 1963 and 2019 don't impinge on issues which belong to the EU's sphere of responsibility. Movements across the Irish border issues are EU matters since that border is due to become an EU external border with Brexiting UK

    Ireland and UK have bilateral treaties. The issue now, however, is that GFA was agreed with both in the EU - strand II of GFA has functioned (very well) based on shared EU rules. Alternative is Ireland leaves the EU and negotiates bilaterally...I wonder how that would work out?

    Don't have details, but this is nonsense. Probably just a "sense of the House" resolution, especially this early in new Congress; no definite info this early in news cycle, however. You are right, Senate approves treaties & House has no role (except for purse-strings later).

    Extraordinary times. Will this text be about the 1949 Washington Treaty (creating the Atlantic Alliance) or NATO (the organisation underpining the treaty) ? I am unclear as to the House's powers: treaties tend to be in the Senate's gift; NATO belongs to the executive sphere?

    This shouldn’t be necessary. But it is.

    Asked formally in whose name? Have you ANY mandate from anyone except yourself for interfering in the UK’s relations with a foreign country in this way?

    Any attempts by Remainer MPs to delay or obstruct must be opposed. Today I have formally asked Polish Government to veto any motions by EU to allow extension of Article 50. We are leaving 11pm on March 29th as promised

    A polite yet damning judgment. It could have been wiser to have longer talks in order to put a more substantive treaty up for signature later on. Signing for the pleasure of signing isn't good enough & may paradoxically be hindering the debunking of antiGerman fake news in France

    The -Treaty is emblematic of the current state of 🇩🇪-🇫🇷 relations: strong on symbols, but weak on substance. While I appreciate the historical signal that the special 🇫🇷-🇩🇪 link is still alive, I believe our common destiny requires more: it also requires true joint action.

    Maybe IAF used (inexpensive, dispensible) kamikaze anti-radar drone(s). I wonder if the IDF's choice to post this on Twitter isn't a way of signalling to Russia that the Syrians are trying to use advanced kit outside of Russian red lines; not likely IDF wants to humiliate Russia

    Israeli air fore strike on Pantsir in Syria, last night. The pride of Russia - but look carefully on the 2 missiles launched against the incoming munitions. Something caused them to divert and to self destruct. Russian MOD claims most/all Israeli munitions are intercepted.

    I suspect China will respond not with a fit of powerless pique but with a long game, with the firm intent of making the US eventually pay with interest for this humiliating in-your-face pressure. POTUS is stoking the fires of future conflict.

    China posts slowest economic numbers since 1990 due to U.S. trade tensions and new policies. Makes so much sense for China to finally do a Real Deal, and stop playing around!

    This is beyond weird: in fact, the big problem with the treaty is that there is so little in it, & it should be criticised accordingly. But in an era where "nothing is true but everything is possible" (Pomerantsev on Russian media), govts have to spend time debunking absurdities

    Amazing that this is what an communiqué now has to look like in 2019 -- using all caps to underscore that no, France will not be ceding control of Alsace-Lorraine to Germany:

    Intéressant...Mais à moins de démontrer que les alternatives industrielles proposées soient meilleurs que l'opération avec Fincantieri (et tel est peut être le cas ), mieux vaut ne pas subordonner la politique industrielle au long cours aux poussées de fièvre franco-italiennes

    Poland's Sonderweg will fail. By misleading HMG into believing this could work, Poland increases risk of no-deal Brexit as clock ticks on. EU members will not fail to remember how Poland & UK will have made a bad situation worse. Maximum damage as Poland forgets its own history
