Startup Apps in the New Year

Cab hailing, food delivery, and every service you can possibly need (or don’t need) seems to have an app nowadays. Internet startups have completely revolutionized our lives. For those who live in Beijing, there are a few startups making enough noise that you might have already noticed in the New Year. Will they survive and continue to transform our city and our lives, or will they be among the majority that fall into oblivion when they run out of money? That’s a question only users and time will answer.

The Fall Of The Han

Anyone who has been lumbered with the moniker “Spokesperson for a Generation” has quickly found it a millstone around their neck. Bob Dylan despised it; for Kurt Cobain, the weight of expectation contributed to his suicide; and Douglas Coupland was asking for trouble with his books riffing on the nature of Generation X and Generation A.

But for Chinese literary star Han Han (韩寒), it never seemed a problem. From his successful debut—Triple Door (2000), which was the best-selling novel in China in 20 years—Han arrived as a celebrity, aged just 17. In many ways the high school dropout remained the eternal teenager. Now in his mid-30s, he still looks like the frontman of a Korean boy band.

New Law Puts TCM in all Hospitals

Modern China has incorporated Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) into its healthcare plans ever since the days of Mao Zedong (though there are reasons to think Mao himself was skeptical of its efficacy), but a new law ushered in on Christmas Day will enhance its role in Chinese medicine like never before.

The law itself rests on the premise that traditional Chinese medicine works; there is very little emphasis on transparency or subjecting treatments to rigorous, neutral testing. China’s official news agency Xinhua even points out that the aversion to clinical testing among many TCM practitioners has resulted in widespread skepticism.

Tales of the Marvelous: Ma Zheng

Pei Xing (裴铏) was known as a pioneer of short fiction in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), largely because of his work Tales of the Marvelous (《传奇》), a three-volume collection of short stories. Each tale focuses on an individual, often involving immortals, fairies, magical beasts, and dazzling heroes. Little is known of the author’s life, except that he was appointed the deputy governor of Chengdu in 878. Chuanqi became a literary genre unto itself, and eventually served as the inspiration for operas, folklore and later literature. Only 31 stories remain, the rest lost to history; here is one of them.

Of Foreign Cabbages and Many Things

It’s said that in the age of outsourcing, globalization, and supermarkets, people no longer know where their stuff comes from. Not so for the ancient Chinese. In their day, as increased trade across the empire’s borders brought new foods and other objects into their daily orbits, the Chinese invented names for these novelties. These names helped exotic objects assimilate into ordinary life while preserving the distinction of their very foreign roots, and as well as the exact nature of China’s foreign relations at the historical period when they were introduced.

ELECT THE ELECTORS

This fall, millions of people across China are competing at the polls for a once-in-five-years’ chance to become one of 2.5 million “people’s representatives” in their townships, counties, or municipal sub-districts. These individuals are chosen from an even more bloated pool of hopefuls who, since August, have attended information meetings, gathered a minimum of 10 nominating signatures from registered voters in their electoral district (or else were nominated by their party, political organization or work unit), and made it through primary elections as well as their local electoral committee’s vetting process to end up on the final candidate list.
