On 2 March 2015, in an historic and special moment for the Commonwealth sporting movement, a formal bid from the Candidate City of Durban, South Africa to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games was received by HRH Prince Imran, President of the Commonwealth Games Federation. If successful, the bid lodgement represents the start of the journey to the first ever Commonwealth Games on African soil.
This celebratory event took place in the Mansion House, the official residence of the Lord Mayor of the City of London. To mark the occasion Durban outlined and showcased its ambitions in front of an international audience of senior sporting, civic and Commonwealth representatives.
Following the formal lodgment of Durban�s candidature files, the next step for the Bid team and their partners is a thorough evaluation process conducted by the Commonwealth Games Federation�s Evaluation Commission, led by Louise Martin, the CGF Honorary Secretary.
The Evaluation Commission will present its detailed technical report to the CGF membership � representatives from all the Commonwealth Games Associations from every corner of the Commonwealth - who will consider Durban�s proposal. The CGF membership will have the final decision, voting to award the 2022 Commonwealth Games at their General Assembly in New Zealand in September.
