Future Distribution Strategies
The way we consume media is changing. Audiences are increasingly using personal devices such as PCs, smartphones and tablets, and the Internet to consume media services. While linear viewing remains the dominant way of watching TV content, time shifted and on-demand services are gaining popularity. Non-traditional service providers have entered the market and new platforms, such as Netflix, Youtube and Chromecast, that use the strengths of online distribution, are seeking to drive viewers away from traditional TV broadcasting. It is important for broadcasters to understand these changes and respond with adequate future leverage strategies.
How can EBU T&I help?
Our Strategic Programme on Future Distribution Strategies helps Members to assess different delivery options for broadcasting. We do so by studying the relevance of different TV distribution options for public service broadcasters in terms of reach, quality, free-to-air and market position. We model the viewing profile of users from a technical point of view, including linear versus non-linear, professionally produced content versus user-generated content, TV sets versus other devices in the home and on the move. We use this information to formulate technical and requirements for connectivity as well as operational and regulatory requirements for service distribution. We also provide you with a forum for sharing best practice.
