That’s an amusing inference. I didn’t realize that Ukraine pre-emptively attacked Russia and Russia occupied Crimea as part of its counter-attack (as happened with the Golan Heights in ‘67).

@BBCSteveR found some Russian articles that were insightful enough to point out the dangerous (for the Kremlin) precedent that would be set by that request. There are a number of “underserved” (aka hellhole) areas of Russia that are likely to want their money back, too.
