ERC20 tokens are as easy to use as Bitcoin was before full blocks. Ordinary people can interact with more complicated contracts than simple tokens without knowing anything about contracts. So I'm not sure what you are talking about.
Funny how some anti-lightning FUDsters claim that "ordinary people" will not use lightning network because it's "too complicated" yet they expect (and their business depends on) the same people using unstable ERC20 tokens and "smart contracts" for everyday life activities.

I like to think I'm not an absolute noob ... and I tried an ERC20 token a couple of days ago. Holy Crap! First I made the mistake to send it to the token contract, while I wanted to send it to my wallet. Then I figured out I needed another address and then it worked 1/

Then I wanted to send that token from my wallet to another one ... and got an error about "expecting X, but seeing 0" WTH? I have tokens. Turns out, you need ETH to send that ERC20 token. But how much? Added some and tx got in a block ... but still failed. Huh? 2/

Turns out you need to find out how much 'gas' that ERC20 token contract needs. Where? Luckily wallet gave a suggestion and that actually worked ... if you selected a proper 'gas price'. Where can I find out what the proper gas price is? And people think bitcoin/LN is complicated?

Not sure what wallet you are using. But you can use any token on your phone (eg imToken). It hides pretty much all complexity for you. LN complexity cannot be hidden away, that's the point here.

MyEtherWallet. I thought almost everyone used that. It didn't tell me that I needed ETH to send that ERC20 token. Through 'googling' I found most of the answers and other parts were mostly lucky guesses. LN can surely be hidden away, I think Zap already does that.

I would think an ordinary person would understand a smart contract is, well, like a contract... a form. Familiar. Vs paying a fee to open & fund a LN channel, transfer some new tokens that aren't bitcoin, pay a fee to close the channel just to send $5. Very unfamiliar. Clumsy.
