Facebook’s mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. As we work toward our mission, we’re focused on conserving energy and water, sourcing clean and renewable energy to power our operations, and creating sustainable work environments for our employees. We openly share our solutions and collaborate across industries because we all need to work together to ensure a sustainable future.

A closer world

In 2004, one million people were using Facebook. Today, more than two billion people from around the world use our family of apps and services, including Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and Oculus. They’re staying connected with friends and family, discovering what’s going on in the world, and expressing what matters to them. We are committed to bringing the world closer together with the smallest footprint possible.

By 2020, Facebook is committed to both reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 75% from a 2017 baseline – a science-based target - and to supporting our operations with 100% renewable energy.

  • “Sharing information and collaborating with others is central to Facebook’s sustainability strategy. If we want to do more, faster, and in a way that scales globally, we have to collaborate with others. That’s why we work with hundreds of companies through the Open Compute Project and the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance.”

  • “When we set out to design the new building at our Menlo Park headquarters, we consulted nonprofit groups from the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society to Sierra Club to the Native Plant Society to get insights into how we could construct a building that would have the least possible impact on its natural surroundings. On this former brownfield site now stands our newest building, featuring a nine-acre green roof that hosts hundreds of mature trees, and native plants and grasses, that provide habitat for pollinators and migrating birds. Facebook employees use the roof for meetings, exercise and to get inspiration.”

Lauren Swezey, Sustainability and Community Outreach Manager, Facebook

  • “The Business Renewables Center congratulates Facebook on achieving its impressive 3 GW sum total of renewable energy procurement. Facebook sets the bar high for other companies to follow in their footsteps and achieve leadership status in pursuing renewable energy, paving new pathways to procurement and sharing best practices to accelerate the transition to a prosperous, low carbon economy.”
