When, as political economists, we encounter credit derivatives and synthetically structured debt, we must not overlook the possibility that their differentiation from generic finance signals an important phase transition in the evolution of our dynamical system of economic institutions, with deep historical, materialist significance. This is a wager of my speculative materialism.
