About & FAQ

ABOUT SMOKE

2751 Broadway New York, NY 10025
212.864.6662

Smoke Jazz & Supper Club presents world-class jazz seven nights a week. Candlelit tables, plush velvet banquets, antique chandeliers, and an historic full-length bar create a real jazz vibe. Smoke also serves the perfect complement to classic jazz— soulful American cuisine. The room has seating for just over fifty, which ensures that every listener is close to the action. During Smoke's renovation, the primary focus was on creating an unparalleled room for music...and it shows. The acoustics are some of the best anywhere. Pianist David Hazeltine remarked, “I love playing this room. It’s rare that the piano can be heard as clearly as it is in this club.” Harold Mabern added, “It’s the best jazz club in the world.” In the almost 20 years since its opening, jazz has continued to thrive at 106th (aka Duke Ellington Boulevard) and Broadway and Smoke is adding a few new chapters of history to a location that has been host to a legendary jazz venue for over 40 years. Smoke was named “Best New Jazz Club” in 2000 by New York Magazine and has won the open table diner's choice awards for several consecutive years.

FAQ

Is there an entrance fee to see music?

Most feature shows are subject to a music charge while most late night shows are not. Music charges range from $15 – $45 (please see event listing for details). Food and beverage minimums apply to all shows. Please see event listing for details as policies may change from show to show.

Do I need to make a reservation or purchase tickets in advance?

We highly recommend that you make a reservation or purchase tickets for the set you'd like to see, either by calling Smoke after 5pm at 212-864-6662 or via this website. We do require that parties of 5 or more pre-purchase their tickets. For parties of 8 or more, please email [email protected] to inquire about availability for a specific date and set.

Why are some shows listed as dinner shows?

The first two shows on most nights are dinner shows which means all tables are reserved for dining guests only. If you are not looking to have dinner during a dinner show you, then will be seated at the bar.

Do I have to order full dinner at a table or can we just share appetizers?

The dinner sets during our featured artist shows (mostly Friday – Saturday, some exceptions apply—see event listing for detail) have a minimum purchase of one entree per person. But feel free to order appetizers and desserts in addition to your main course, and yes, feel free to share those if you like. The minimum purchase on Prix-Fixe nights (mostly Sunday – Thursday, some exceptions apply—see event listing for details) is $42 per person so the 3-Course Jazz Dinner Prix-Fixe is a great way to enjoy the full menu at a discount and cover the minimum purchase at the same time.

Some of your shows list a music charge and a $20 minimum. Can we use the $20 minimum towards food or is this a drink minimum?

You may cover your minimum any way you like: food, drinks or a combination of the two, and please remember that our kitchen is open until 11:00pm nightly and 12:00am Fridays and Saturdays.

May we stay for more than one set?

Each reservation is for one set only. But if we have room we may be able to make an exception. It never hurts to ask and we certainly appreciate your enthusiasm for the music.

May we converse during the show?

Smoke does have a quiet policy, and we request that conversation be kept to a minimum and voices kept to a whisper during the music set. If you would like to converse with your group, we advise that you come to the 7pm show, where you can have drinks, dinner and conversation before the set from 5pm-7pm.

Is there an age minimum to visit Smoke?

We have no age minimum at Smoke. However, please be aware that you will have to reserve or purchase tickets for a table in the dining room (New York State law prohibits minors under the age of 21 from sitting at the bar) and any music charges and food/beverage minimums will apply to all guests.

SMOKE SESSIONS RECORDS CD RELEASE

Al Foster - "Inspirations & Dedications"

INSPIRATION COMES FROM MANY SOURCES. For legendary drummer Al Foster, it stems from the two groups of people who are closest to him: the jazz giants he’s been honored to play with (and who, though he’d be the last to admit it, have been blessed to work with him); and, first and foremost, his family. On his latest album, Inspirations & Dedications, Foster pays back his loved ones and collaborators with a set of songs written or interpreted in their honor.

Inspirations & Dedications is largely composed of Foster’s original tunes, which lovingly tip their hats to his wife, children, grandchildren, colleagues, and even himself. The album is bookended by a pair of classics by two of the jazz icons with whom the drummer has worked extensively: Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis. Each piece comes vividly to life through Foster’s stellar quintet: trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, saxophonist Dayna Stephens, pianist Adam Birnbaum, and longtime bassist (and dedicatee) Doug Weiss.

The pieces on Inspirations & Dedications aren’t portraits but gifts, beloved tunes titled as remembrances and appreciations. Foster has been acknowledging the people who’ve made an impact on his life for as long as he’s been writing music. “I’m getting up there in age,” says the 76-year old drummer, though he’s also quick to point out that he’s in good health. “My musical life has been unbelievable, and I love my family. I just wanted to leave them something to enjoy with my songs.”
