Reviving Jewish Approaches to Mourning

The Shiva Project is an exploration of Jewish grief and mourning practices in our communities and beyond.

The Shiva Project included research, more than 80 interviews with Jewish end-of-life professionals, and the gathering of stories from 50 focus group participants nationwide.

This led to the creation of three personas, or composites, designed to reflect the depth and breadth of Jewish experience.

The research culminated in two design sprints (ideation sessions) to generate ideas to address the concerns, barriers, and pain points of participating in Jewish mourning rituals.

These ideas are the spark for Shomer Collective’s developing work on grief and mourning in 2024.

The Shiva Project initial findings were made possible thanks to a generous grant from The Aviv Foundation.
