Program provides opportunities for academic development, assistance with basic college requirements, and motivates students toward the successful completion of their bachelor degree. The goal of SSSP is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants. SSSP also may provide grant aid to current participants who are receiving Federal Pell Grant.

“My experience with the TRIO program has given me hope and purpose, as well as helping me establish lifelong values and priorities. TRIO SSS has transformed my outlook on life. I started TRIO SSS at FIU in Spring 2023 and it was the best decision I have ever made. Getting involved with TRIO has been beneficial and influential. The program feels like a family away from home; they genuinely care for their students and always go beyond for them. Being a part of TRIO has significantly contributed to my success in college and life. It was truly a game changer, providing the support and encouragement I needed at a critical time. I am deeply grateful for their help; they encouraged and pushed me to keep going, which was exactly what I needed. The aspect I appreciate most about TRIO SSS is the safe and supportive environment it offers. Joining the federal TRIO program was not something I anticipated when I started college, but it turned out to be an excellent decision.”

“The impact of the Student Support Services Program (SSS) on my college journey has been profound. Without SSS, I wouldn’t be the person I am today as a first-generation college graduate. The mentorship provided, especially having Moira Lertora as my support, has been invaluable. SSS not only supported me academically but also played a crucial role in my professional growth. The encouragement I received from SSS is what motivates me to pursue my MBA. The program has been a guiding light, shaping not just my educational path but also my future aspirations. I am forever grateful for the opportunities, resources, support, and belief in me that SSS has provided.”

“I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Florida International University. Currently, I am pursuing my master’s degree in Public Health at Florida International University. Without TRIO I wouldn’t have been continuing my educational studies. I had a support system when I needed it the most. They pushed me to my full potential and never doubted me. The staff from the program are amazing individuals who care about every student’s success. Student support services offered me opportunities that I wouldn’t have been able to obtain anywhere else.”

I have been part of the TRIO program for about 10 years. I was first introduced to Educational Talent Search in the 7th grade while attending John F. Kennedy Middle School through the Junior Panthers program. Then, when I went to MAST @ FIU, I attended the Saturday Academy through ETS. Afterward, I transitioned to the Golden Scholars, Student Support Services, and the Invitational Scholar program. During my senior year, I joined the Ronald McNair Program.
I have been truly blessed to take advantage of the resources that TRIO offers, but most importantly, the people who have been part of my academic journey ensured my success in classes. As a first-generation student from a Haitian background, I couldn’t name many scholarships or resources that encourage students to complete their degrees, ensure their resumes are updated, or inform them about resource fairs and interview preparation. One thing is knowing resources exist, but applying and asking for help or feedback is another. Because of the TRIO program, I was blessed to attend Northwestern University for my master’s, with tuition completely covered.
My advice is to always be consistent, talk to your mentors, and ask for help/feedback. They are the reason why I stayed in the program for so long, and please use your resources.
