Fabric Manipulation 3-day course
Try out a wide range of fabric manipulation techniques, taking inspiration from historic textiles and contemporary fashion. Techniques include formal and organic pleating and folding, stitching and gathering to create interesting textures and 3D appliqué to create bold, exciting fabrics from scratch. Make samples or work towards a finished textile.

Using antique textiles on display at West Dean and Ruth’s own collections as inspiration, explore a variety of textile techniques and exciting materials to create your own textile artwork. Experiment with hand and machine embroidery, appliqué, simple print and surface embellishment techniques to develop ideas, designs and stitched samples.

Experiment with local plants, rusty metal and food waste to create exciting patterns on cloth. You will have the chance to try different techniques to create lovely, delicate colours and learn how to do simple dyeing at home with basic equipment.
