Rainmaker

Principe

This is Principe seen from its little sister Caroco Islet (Ilhéu Caroço) in a lucky break between the many rain showers, as this is in the rainy season.

The clouds form this low due to the many high peaks and have made Principe a lush and diverse Atlantic island. You are very lucky to see these peaks in the rainy season for more than short periods when the clouds temporarily break up. Chances are best at dawn and dusk, but likely you will see much less than in this capture and perhaps also be drenched.

As I packed my gear and headed back to my hotel the clouds congested ominously and not long after my departure the place I had enjoyed such an amazing time was receiving yet another dose of water from the heavens.

Incoming

Bom Bom Islet, Principe

Here I’m standing on an outcrop high and dry from the incoming tidal waves that were forced through a hole in the volcanic rock, with great views of the low hanging sun and the Atlantic ocean.

I encountered quite a few of these cracks and holes in the tidal zone on Principe, but they are only fun during a narrow tidal window when the waves have maximum impact through the hole. That’s when they slam onto the rocks and through the hole with a loud boom! In fact the first one I found by sound and not by sight! I heard it through the dense forest and had to investigate, and actually first stopped to just listen to it in the forest. Simply savoring the rhythm of the ocean.

Just listening in I could gauge the seemingly irregular rhythm of the outgoing or incoming tide – several impacts with a rather lax punch, then every now and then a punch that made the ground and air shake!

Each location with its own unique series of sounds.

As I stood here enjoying the sounds and sights of my last evening on Principe the time and tide caught up with me and eventually one huge wave managed to push its way so high that I was completely drenched in a tropical warm shower!

A warm and wet embrace!

Bom Bom sunset

Bom Bom Islet, Principe

What a beautiful end to my wonderful stay on Principe! This was my last day, and thus chance of a sunset. Being in the rainy season a sunset is very uncertain all the way up to the time of the sunset as the cloud cover is ever changing and can switch from sunny to downpour in minutes.

Seasonal waterfall on an island

Principe

This is only the very lowest part of a tall and impressive waterfall on the island of Principe.

This is shot in the rainy season and thus there was plenty of water flowing, but as this is a small island this flow is but a trickle if any at all during the dryer months. I suspect this pool is just a puddle then.

The only way to get a shot of the entire waterfall and the sheer cliff is from the ocean, that is how dense the forest is and how rugged the terrain is. Yet this is the waterfall with the easiest access.

What I love about free falling water like this is how the water is swaying and undulating in the air, falling to the ground in an unpredictable fashion (here you see it is swaying to the left). Not to mention the spray being pushed outward in a wind generated by the motion of the falling water.
