Visiting Slovenia: Lake Bled Island

There is an old legend about the tragic fate of a widow Poliksena who lived in the Bled Castle. After her husband passed, she promised to bring a bell for the Church of the mother of God on island in the Bled lake. As she was crossing the lake, a big storm came and sank her boat. Both Poliksena and bell sank to the deeps of Bled lake and people tell that to this day one can still hear the bell ringing from the depths of the Bled.

These days it is believed that if you ring a bell of church’ bell tower and give your honour to St Mary, your wish will come true.

Bled lake island is the only natural island in whole Slovenia and attracts a lot of people every year. Located near Julian alps it is only 60km from Slovenia Capital, Ljubljana.
