Mount Makalu, Himalayas | ESA
Mount Makalu in the Himalayas is pictured in this European Space Agency Copernicus Sentinel-2B image from December 9, 2017. At 8485 m high, Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world. The iconic pyramid-shaped mountain can be seen just to the right of the center of the image. It is situated on the border between Nepal and China, about 19 km southeast of Mount Everest, which is in the top left of the image.
Because of the mountain’s knife-edge ridges and its remote position, which leaves it exposed to the elements, it is viewed by many as one of the world’s most difficult mountains to climb.
Nevertheless, Swedish explorer, mountaineer and climate campaigner, Carina Ahlqvist, led a climb this year to raise awareness of climate change and to support ESA’s Climate Change Initiative. During the expedition, scientists collected measurements to help validate data from the Copernicus Sentinel-1 radar mission that are used to study natural hazards such as rock falls and landslides in mountainous regions. The team also surveyed the Barun glacier, which lies at the base of Makalu, to help understand its history and therefore the past climate in this region.
Unfortunately, Carina was struck with snow blindness and had to be evacuated just 300 m from Makalu’s summit. She is now safe and well and the data collected during the expedition are being used to further understand the dynamics of this remote region and how it is being affected by climate change.

Monte Fitz Roy, South America | Planet Labs
Earth CubeSat imagery: Monte Fitz Roy—a mountain in the Patagonia Region on the border of Argentina and Chile—captured by a Planet Labs satellite at a low angle. With an elevation of 11,171 ft (3,405 m) and sheer granite faces, it is one of the most technically challenging mountains to ascent on Earth.

The company designs and manufactures Triple-CubeSat miniature satellites called Doves that are then delivered into orbit as secondary payloads on other rocket launch missions. Each Dove is equipped with a high-powered telescope and camera programmed to capture different swaths of Earth. Each Dove Earth observation satellite continuously scans Earth, sending data once it passes over a ground station. Together, Doves form a satellite constellation that provides a complete image of Earth once per day at 3-5m optical resolution.

Glacial Lake, Iceland | DigitalGlobe
Earth satellite imagery: Jökulsarlón—or “glacial river lagoon” in English—is a large glacial lake in southeastern Iceland. Located next to the massive Vatnajökull glacier, the lagoon is formed as chunks of glacial ice melt before meeting the Atlantic Ocean. Sixty years ago, when the glacier reached all the way to the shore, Jökulsárlón did not exist; but since the 1970s it has more than quadrupled in size.

A lush landscape dominated by boreal forests is pictured in this satellite image over the Plesetsky District of northeast Russia’s Archangel Oblast.
Forests play a crucial role in Earth’s carbon cycle by absorbing carbon from the atmosphere and storing it in biomass. Boreal forests – including forest soil – store a third more carbon stocks per hectare as tropical forests, making them one of the most significant carbon sinks in the world.
A satellite dedicated to monitoring our atmosphere is poised on top of a Rockot on the launch pad at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome, visible in the upper right. The Copernicus satellite, Sentinel-5P, is set for liftoff at 09:27 GMT (11:27 CEST).
Sentinel-5P carries the state-of-the-art Tropomi instrument to map a multitude of trace gases such as nitrogen dioxide, ozone, formaldehyde, sulphur dioxide, methane, carbon monoxide and aerosols – all of which affect the air we breathe and therefore our health, and our climate.
