#Britain’s National Health Service is trialling a #chatbot that gives advice on how urgent your condition might be. If the chatbot decides you’re sick enough, it might put you through to a #virtualdoctor via your smartphone video. Wait time only six minutes. The NHS hopes the chatbot is a cheaper, better alternative to the expensive telephone triage hotline that stands accused of giving dodgy advice and hanging up on callers.

The trial is part of a service run by a big-talking company called Babylon Health - whose ambition is to deliver cheap healthcare to the world, by cutting back on the use of human doctors. If the chatbot can eventually give reliable diagnoses, write prescriptions and specialist referrals - as Babylon is proposing for the future - then those public costs should fall substantially.

British officials threatened Mauritians with the withdrawal of an independence agreement if they did not surrender a large tract of their territory to the British, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) heard on Monday (Sept 3). This is according to the statement delivered by Sir #AneroodJugnauth, #Mauritius’s defence minister, before the court in the Hague, as it embarked on its public hearings that may determine the legal consequences of the separation of the #Chagos Archipelago from Mauritius in 1965. The archipelago is #Britain’s last remaining African colony.

Twenty-two nations have applied to take part in the proceedings. Supporting Britain in its bid to retain control of the islands are the #UnitedStates, #Australia and #Israel. The United States maintains a large and strategically important naval base on #DiegoGarcia, the largest of the #ChagosIslands. Seventeen other nations support Mauritius’ claim of sovereignty: #Belize, #Botswana, #Brazil, #Cyprus, #Germany, #Guatemala, #India, #Kenya, the #MarshallIslands, Mauritius, #Nicaragua, #Nigeria, #Serbia, #SouthAfrica, #Thailand, #Vanuatu and #Zambia. The #AfricanUnion will also be making representations in support of Mauritius.
