#Amazon employs over half a million workers. In the past year alone, the #onlineretailer has added roughly a quarter of a million employees to its headcount, and 238 cities across the country are competing to become the location of Amazon's second headquarters, which is estimated to create 50,000 more Amazon jobs.

But according to Dave Edwards and Helen Edwards at Quartz, Amazon may be killing more jobs than it creates. According to their calculations, even if Amazon maintains an impressive 43% personnel growth for another year, the total number of workers employed in Amazon-related industries would still decrease by 24,000.

In much of the world, people whose livelihoods depend on paychecks are increasingly anxious about a potential wave of #unemployment threatened by automation. As the frightening tale goes, #globalization forced people in wealthier lands like North America and Europe to compete directly with cheaper laborers in Asia and Latin America, sowing joblessness. Now, the robots are coming to finish off the humans.

But such talk has little currency in #Sweden or its Scandinavian neighbors, where unions are powerful, government support is abundant, and trust between employers and employees runs deep. Here, #robots are just another way to make companies more efficient. As employers prosper, workers have consistently gained a proportionate slice of the spoils - a stark contrast to the United States and Britain, where wages have stagnated even while corporate profits have soared.

In contrast to the often-heard doomsday commentaries that robots will replace human workers, Gartner predicts that #artificialintelligence may actually create more jobs than it's expected to eliminate. By 2020, artificial intelligence (AI) will generate 2.3 million jobs, exceeding the 1.8 million that it will wipe out, the company said in a recent report. In the following five years to 2025, net new jobs created in relation to AI will reach 2 million.

The number of jobs affected will vary from industry to industry. The public sector, healthcare and education are expected to gain the most jobs, while manufacturing and transportation may be the hit the hardest, according to Gartner's research director, Manjunath Bhat.

Think of this as one of the more extreme reactions to the rise of #artificialintelligence and #robotics, which, depending on whom you ask, is either the best or worst thing to happen to humankind. Tech luminaries such as Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk have issued gloom-and-doom warnings about the misuse of the technology. But some, including one startup from Musk himself, see an opportunity to use tech to boost human capabilities -- and potentially partner with AI.

Brain augmentation might sound like science fiction, but the #technology is already a well-established field of neuroscience. There are noninvasive forms of tech like EEG, in which sensors use electrical signals to communicate with our brains, and cochlear implants that interface with auditory neurons to restore hearing. Brain-computer interfaces already play a crucial role in treating diseases such as Parkinson's, epilepsy and ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease or motor neurone disease.
