ALMA observes most distant galactic outflow
ALMA, aided by a gravitational lens, imaged the outflow, or “wind,” from a galaxy seen when the universe was only one billion years old. The ALMA image (circle call out) shows the location of hydroxyl (OH) molecules. These molecules trace the location of star-forming gas as it is fleeing the galaxy, driven by either supernovas or a black-hole powered “wind.” The background star field (Blanco Telescope Dark Energy Survey) shows the location of the galaxy. The circular, double-lobe shape of the distant galaxy is due to the distortion caused by the cosmic magnifying effect of an intervening galaxy.

A Quick Look at Ring Galaxy AM 0644 | NASA Chandra
A new ring of black holes or neutron stars has been discovered in a galaxy about 300 million light years from Earth. This ring was forged when one galaxy smashed through the middle of another, creating ripples in the gas. As this gas expanded through the impacted galaxy, called AM 0644-741, it triggered waves of star formation.
The most massive of these stars lasted only a few million years, before exploding as supernovas and leaving behind black holes or neutron stars as their remains.
NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory can detect some of these black holes and neutron stars as they siphon off material from stars that orbit them.
Studying 'ring' galaxies such as this one will help astronomers better understand what happens when galaxies clash in catastrophic impacts.

A new ring of black holes or neutron stars has been discovered in a galaxy about 300 million light years from Earth. This ring was forged when one galaxy smashed through the middle of another, creating ripples in the gas. As this gas expanded through the impacted galaxy, called AM 0644-741, it triggered waves of star formation.

Week of Sept. 7, 2018 | For the first time, NASA's modified mobile launcher made a trek to Launch Pad 39B atop crawler-transporter 2. The 380-foot-tall structure underwent a fit check on the surface of the pad, followed by several days of systems testing. Then it will depart the pad and make the trek to the Vehicle Assembly Building.

"The Horsehead Nebula - Ledge Point Edition" by Will Vrbasso (www.stellaraustralis.com)
My second attempt at the famous Horsehead Nebula (and other miscellaneous astro objects :). Taken near Ledge Point, Western Australia. This shot was with an unmodified stock Canon EOS6D DSLR in the warm southern hemisphere nights - I love to push the equipment as far as it can go. However, being impatient, this is an HDR but only with 3 stacked lights per HDR exposure: 3 x 148sec, 3 x 300sec, 3 x 600sec. To do the job properly I need more lights - but I'll soon have time over Christmas to do the job properly.

"From the Core to Antares"
A popular composition of widefield imaging is the this "slice" from the Milkyway core to Antares. I've differed slightly by capturing a bit more of the surrounding region. From the core on the left the recognisable Lagoon and Trifid nebulas can be seen, as well as the Omega and Eaglo nebulas higher up. On the right hand side is the multi-coloured comet that is the Antares / Rho Ophicuhi region. A little above is the Blue Horsehead nebula and then the Kobold nebula peaks in at the top of the image. Can you spot the comet C/2018 N1 NEOWISE discovered only last month in July?
This multi-panel mosaic was taken on 12/13 August 2018 from Regans Ford in Western Australia. A modified Canon EOS6d was used through a Canon 85mm f1.2 lens, mounted on a guided Skywatcher NEQ6 mount. Processing in Pixinsight, and post-processing with PS-CC.
