Burning Darkness

When it's time for the darkness to begin burning vivid, horrendous images
onto your retinas; consuming you with night terrors... leaving you undone
Who will be there to remind you that you're safe and that your mission is done?

When the sweats, shakes, tics, pain and panic ravage at your body;
your breath and sanity prove hard to find... as you take cover on the floor
Who will be there to help you back to you feet; to stand tall again once more?

When you're wrestling with your conscience over things that you were forced to do
Overwhelmed by survivor's guilt, despair and grief for comrades... friends lost
Who will be there for you to scream at, cry, offload to; if you ever feel that you can accost?

When everyday sounds, smells trigger flashbacks and you relive the trauma all over again
Left frustrated, angry, numb, isolated; all crowds, strangers, gatherings...potential threats
Who will be there to remind you that for your sacrifices, we are, as a country in your debt?

Let us not leave them to fight this burning darkness ~ Combat PTSD... alone

+Just In Words I do not want to argue with you my friend as I am certainly against any kind of conflict or war as it hurts everyone it touches apart form the powers that be and the ammunition factory owners' bank balances. I am a Peace activist but I do recognise that in times of crisis (floods, fires, earthquakes, when under attack and with outbreaks of pandemics such as Ebola), the Armed forces do a lot to protect and serve us and for that they need our thanks. Therefore I am going to delete your comment out of respect for them and their families and for the sacrifices they have made.

Skyscraper Stealth

In his, now, uniform of city-grime,
amidst the Suits dashing to make up time;
he stands at attention, salutes alone
...subway now his shelter, cardboard his home

Bemused passers-by, ridicule the show
He stands firm, undeterred... how could they know?
Their eyes have not seen, what his can't forget,
Their souls are not stained in blood and regret

In silence, he hears haunting screams from the past
His ears ring incessantly since the blast
He still tastes the sand, which made his eyes bleed
...when naively he hoped to intercede

He joined at eighteen, still child not yet man;
aspiring hero defending homeland
Little had he thought of what was involved
...his orders and conscience left unresolved

War's atrocities, he's witnessed first-hand
Dismembered limbs he's picked up with his hands
He's held friends close as they drew their last breath;
his nostrils filled still... with foul stench of death

Eleven o'clock it has now been and gone,
on eleventh day this November morn
He's glad of the rain as it hides his tears...
for all of the fallen, throughout the years

It's not with pride but with respect he stands,
for he's seen the cost... he understands
Amusement, for some, his actions maybe;
judged as a Bum as his injury's unseen

No hero is he deemed... nor deems himself
Drowning, daily, flashbacks have damaged his health
He's lost his mind, family, house and wealth
...now lives in shadows, in skyscraper stealth

The Blighted Hero

I care way too darn much... I care way too darn deep
Reality hurts so I drink to stay asleep
I'm haunted by many reoccurring nightmares
of memories that I just can no longer bear
Copious tears I have drunk from the vinyard's vine,
that hasten my darkling and spiraling decline
into depression's lonely lurid abyss;
where I flirt tragically with death's karma kiss

Please, now believe me... I was not always this way
The rules, I once submissively did obey
I have fought, bled and grafted for my bless'ed homeland
My "welcome home" heralded by a grateful band
As together for our fallen brothers we mourned;
a medal of valour upon me they adorned
A country, once so proud of their galant hero;
but now... they no longer wish, of me, to know

I've become a stain on their pristine, perfect sheet,
a part of history they now wish to delete
As the war, I fought, is now under scrutiny;
now a deviant... through fulfilling my duty
No rehabilitation... I struggle to cope
To protect my kin... I thought it best I elope
All alone on Civvy Street... I do not belong
...drunkenly singing, proud, my old regiment's song

So please do not judge me on what you now, in me, see
I'm a casualty of war... reduced to debris
Some fear; even pity me and some think me insane
Truth is... I've invisible wounds that torment my brain
For the deaths of my comrades and enemies, I've wept
No longer a robot programmed to fight and protect
Oh when will the world's greed, fear and hatred decrease?
I yearn for the day, the world and I... are free to find peace

War hurts everyone apart the people who make money out of selling ammunition and weapons :(

Monster Within....PTSD!

How many more of our boys will be left to suffer?
Wives, girlfriends, partners, children, fathers and mothers.
Traumatised by seeing their loved ones shattered and broken!
Through the atrocities of war a monster has stirred and is woken
Invading, consuming our Hero's every thought
The enemy it seems, will not be the only thing that needs to be fought
Left unable to escape, even when they try to sleep
As its intensity grows and to their subconscious it leaps.
Corrupting and transforming their once peaceful dreams
Evoking terror and flashbacks making them fall to their knees!
Actions, words, emotions lose all incentive and meaning.
Drugs, alcohol et cetera, become crutches upon which many are leaning
Their future robbed of hope, good health and cheer.
Replaced by self loathing, paranoia and fear.
Their loved ones look on helplessly, frustrated and ill equipped!
To deal with the consequences of the balance being tipped.
Oh where now are the ones who sent them to war?
When our lads are bled dry and shook to their core.
Really..is it too much to ask that our Heroes be cared for?
Ironically, our politicians continue regardless and instead deploy more!
When will the recognition be given to those with their wounds unseen.
The treatment, empathy and funding required to deal with the aftermath....PTSD!
