#Canada and the #UnitedStates showed scant sign on Thursday (Sept 20) of closing a deal to revamp #NAFTA, and Canadian officials made clear Washington needed to withdraw a threat of possible autos tariff. The administration of U.S. President Donald #Trump wants to be able to agree a text of the three-nation #NorthAmericanFreeTradeAgreement by the end of September, but major differences remain.

Canada says it does not feel bound by the latest deadline. Asked whether time was running out, Foreign Minister #ChrystiaFreeland said her focus was getting a deal that was good for Canadians. Trump came to power last year vowing to tear up #NAFTA unless major changes were made to a pact he blames for the loss of U.S. manufacturing jobs.

Trade is expected to be a major issue because Trump has identified the U.S. trade deficit with Japan as problematic for his nation. Tokyo will propose a joint statement laying out how to move forward with planned negotiations when #ToshimitsuMotegi, state minister in charge of trade talks, meets with U.S. Trade Representative #RobertLighthizer on Monday (Sept 24) in New York. If Tokyo and Washington agree on its content, a statement could be released Wednesday after #ShinzoAbe and #Trump hold talks in New York on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly’s annual meeting.

#Japan is to agree to talks on a bilateral deal on condition that Washington holds off on imposing additional tariffs on the Japanese auto sector, according to the sources. Tokyo is expected to continue resisting demands to reduce its agricultural tariffs below that agreed in the TPP talks in hope of encouraging Washington to return to the multilateral framework
