#CheniereEnergy announced Friday (Feb 9) that it has struck 2 long-term deals to sell liquefied natural gas to China’s state-controlled oil and gas giant. The Houston-based energy company will sell about 1.2 million tons of #LNG a year to #PetroChina International Co., a subsidiary of China National Petroleum Corporation, as part of two sale agreements that extend through 2043. Shipments will begin this year and ramp up in 2023.

According to #Cheniere president and CEO Jack Fusco, #China is 'one of the largest and fastest growing LNG markets worldwide' and has recently accelerated a shift from coal to #naturalgas in an effort to address a air pollution crisis in many of its urban areas. Cheniere is working to open its terminal at the Port of Corpus Christi, which will support the deals with China. The company has begun construction on two liquefaction facilities there, and it’s planning to build a third if it secures enough sale contracts.

#Canada’s first exports of #liquefiednaturalgas may soon be heading overseas -- from a port in Louisiana. A year ago, #CheniereEnergy Inc. built an #LNG export terminal along Louisiana’s coast and became the only company shipping U.S. shale gas by tanker. Now it’s looking for supplies to send abroad from as far off as the Montney shale play, straddling Canada’s Alberta and British Columbia provinces.

The deal underscores the great lengths Canada’s gas explorers are having to go to get their fuel to market as they face escalating competition from U.S. shale drillers at home. While several LNG export terminals have been proposed along Canada’s West Coast, it’ll be years before any are up and running.

The US just entered the global #LNG race when #CheniereEnergy exported its first cargo from its Sabine Pass export terminal on the US Gulf of Mexico. For years, Alaska has exported LNG, mostly to Pacific Rim countries, but these volumes have been small. Cheniere’s cargo is the first LNG shipment from the Lower 48. Moreover, as many as 5 more LNG projects are in various stages of construction in the US However, plunging oil and gas prices will effectively cut short any celebratory cheers.

#AsiaPacific, which accounts for two-thirds of global LNG demand, will continue to see its demand growth weaken, particularly as #Japan , the word’s top LNG importer, continues to bring nuclear power back on line. Thus, its hard to see a major importer offsetting lost of Asian demand this decade. Moreover, the most poignant question is where will demand come from by 2020 and beyond since it appears that LNG markets will be over supplied well into the next decade.

U.S. #liquefiednaturalgas (LNG) company #CheniereEnergy Inc said it had signed a 25-year deal to supply #Taiwan’s CPC Corp, which CPC valued at roughly $25bn. Cheniere said it will sell 2 million tonnes of #LNG per year on a delivered basis to the state-owned oil and gas company, starting in 2021. It said the purchase price will be pegged to the Henry Hub monthly average, plus a fee.

CPC has already been importing substantial volumes from Qatar and Australia. The deal is also viewed as an important part of Taiwan’s efforts to reduce its trade surplus with the #UnitedStates. The contract is a significant boost to Taiwan’s trade relations with the United States, particularly given the Trump administration’s focus on trade with Asia
