Breakaway Low Pass

1963
Squadron Leader Lyall Klaffer breaks away from the formation to buzz the excited crowd of airshow attendees.

How clever is my brother? (The correct answer is very). Brother Peter casts all sorts of cool stuff, and for a while, was casting metal toys. As I love aircraft and have a specific interest in the Royal Australian Air Force, Peter cast me a beautiful replica of an RAAF Telstars de Havilland Vampire at approximately 1/200th scale (about 5cm/2" long)

I'm thinking hard about going to a single camera (MFT only) and moving on my Sony full frame. This means my old OM (film) Zuiko glass will get a double-up on the 2x crop factor MFT sensor. In other words, a 50mm standard lens, via an adapter, on MFT takes on the look of a 100mm portrait lens on full frame. This is cool for the telephoto end, but with my widest legacy glass at 24mm, nothing becomes wider than 'standard'.

The 0.71x magnification of the Metabones Speed Booster goes part way to helping me out. My 24mm x 0.71 = 17mm (approx) and becomes a quite usable wide lens (although I will physically need to modify it). I suppose I could look for a Zuiko 18mm to give me an approximate equivalent of my favourite wide focal length, 24mm; but I think that I need to come to grips with the compromise. The OM Zuiko 18mm f3.5 will give me a 13mm (approx) f2.5 manual focus 20+YO secondhand lens for about $1,100. Whereas a secondhand M.Zuiko 12mm goes for about $600 and gives me everything I want, without compromise (please do not comment about new vs legacy glass, as it was not the intention of this post to open up that debate).

So, I think I will pick up a Speed Booster to enjoy my legacy Zuiko glass on MFT, and be happy that I'll never go wider than a 34mm equivalent.

+Gary Ayton may wish to weigh in on this debate (as he gave me some great advice in this area a couple of years ago). I'd also be interested to read about others who have played with legacy glass, via the Speed Booster, on MFT.

If you are new to the Speed Booster concept, have a look at this video from +Matt Granger. It's the best I've seen on the subject.

Here's the update to the 'should I ditch my Sony/Panasonic?' video.
Close, but no cigar.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it

This is a challenge to my G+ toy photography buddies: investigate a fellow member's account. Find a member whose work you love and take the time to look through all of their work (or at least go back for a while). Take the time to absorb their work and report back in the Everything Else section as to why you like it. Tag it with #loveyourwork and promote this person to a wider audience.

This week's look is:

+Luigi Priori. I have been following Luigi's work for some months, and am always entertained by his storytelling through interesting Lego minifigure characters and beautifully built MOCs. Benny's Adventures in Space first appealed to me. Since then, the McFoot clan and a wonderful cornucopia of characters have graced his Flickr, IG, and G+ pages.

Luigi's studio work is exemplary and his outdoor scenes make you wish he had invited you to join him on the trek. The softness and humour in his images have you waiting impatiently for the next installment; and when it arrives, it finds its place neatly in the storyline.

+Luigi Priori, I #loveyourwork.

These are the only wheels I could find!
By the way, I've just realized that this is the only photo I've ever taken of the exterior of Outpost Alpha... 😉
