The Pluckin' Strummers

Another Saturday for us to gather to play and sing. Thank you to all the Pluckin’ Strummers for making our club awesome. The time has finally come for us to revert back to a $10 donation per person to keep our club running smoothly. This will allow us to fairly compensate our fantastic location and provide funds for our anniversary celebrations.

          
July is truly flying by and after this meeting it be August 12th until we meet again. That means I will have returned from this years “Ukuleles At Sea” as the music director aboard the 160′ Schooner Zodiac out of Bellingham Wa. There are still a few spots open for the ukulele adventure of a lifetime.

Make sure to grab a flyer at our meeting for Corey’s Ukulele BBQ. Corey and his wife Liza have graciously planned this event for the 5th of August. There will be four 20 minute workshops with some fun songs to play and sing together. Corey, Mike, Susanna, and myself will be teaching some songs. BYOB (Beverage)

Meeting – Saturday July 8th
Happy 4th of July! Just four days after and we meet again. Are you ready? Been practicing? I know it’s tough to find the time in the summer months but remember there’s always time for our four stringed little friend.

Earlier today, Sunday the 2nd I found myself needing to teach ukulele so I went on the FB page Ukulele Players and gave my two cents worth. It was more like a roll of pennies, lol! Maybe TMI to some which made me think of our club. I’ll try to save the heavy teaching for our early Group Lesson Session mainly because it eats up so much time where we could be playing and singing. Please don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed though. Thanks everyone.

Here comes Saturday! I hope everyone had a very wonderful Father’s Day. Is it getting hot enough for everyone? Come cool off while playing ukulele and singing your hearts out. So cool! Lol!A big thank you to those that brought snacks last meeting. Yum!                      

Here it is 9:30pm on Sunday night and I just opened the yellow book to pick some songs and begin my Pluckin’ Strummers six step social media and email routine. It’s gonna be a late one tonight. The first song I opened the book up to has me questioning a couple of the chord choices. It’s “Upside Down” by Jack Johnson. This is the song that Marcele played beautifully for us a couple meetings ago and she transposed the key on the fly. It’s written in F where the original recording is in E. Only a half step difference but I think Marcele played it in C, or was it G? I really like the intro with the hand percussion and the simple slide up riff. Plus the syncopated strum is cool! Okay, we’ll play it. Lol! I was arguing with myself.

If there are no specific questions I’ll pick a topic relative to our meeting so you can get some pointers in advance. We’ll be revisiting the Claw Hammer technique this meeting so maybe a little personal attention there may help. It’s up to you.

I started something new by marking new arrangements with a colorful 

“Post its” on the bottom of the pile. Please build a three ring binder of our arrangements then it’ll be easy to look for and get just new ones. I’ve been revamping a lot of our songs and I’m trying to limit them to two pages so they will be easy to play in a binder. I’ve also purchased a ton of pre-punched paper for your binders so grab a new copy if you have older versions. 

I will also print more arrangements so everyone will get a copy.

Hello Pluckin’ Strummers! Another meeting is upon us and this one is going to be a blast.

               

Several meetings ago we began doing a little extra for our members. Free group lessons where you bring your questions and materials and we do our best to help you improve your ukulele playing skills. We begin at 9am and have 45 minutes to get our learn on.
          

At 9:45 we begin to set up for our regular meeting which we begin at 10 where we play 8 to 10 songs from the books we use. We usually begin with a Quick Lesson Session/Warmup then we dive into preselected songs with a couple quick picks where members get to select songs to play.
               

Around 10:55 we have break time where we enjoy coffee and snacks which generous members supply. Last meeting there were so many delicious goodies so a big thank you to those that contributed!

               

After our break around 11:10 or so we begin round two where we play our arrangements until 12:00. Please suggest songs to add to our ever growing list of arrangements. 

              

We begin performance time at 12:00. This is our members time to shine. If you haven’t got up and played for us yet please consider sharing a song. You’ll be happy you did.

              

Thanks to all our members that keep coming to our meetings. At the end of this year we will have been meeting for seven years. Wow, time really flies when you’re having so much fun. Thanks again!

We also had a request for a beginners Cajon lesson so if you want to bang your drum please bring a Cajon and join in. I’ll jump back and forth between ukulele and the Cajon lesson. Maybe one of our experienced members could join in to help with the ukulele questions. By the way, I’m a beginner on the Cajon also but I am a quick learner and have some of the basics down. I will show you the basics and get you started. I have two Cajons which I will bring so someone can borrow the extra one. This will be fun! Thanks to Honey B for the suggestion!

Meeting – Sat. May 13th
Hello to all you Pluckin’ Strummers! 

Feels like an eternity since we’ve had a meeting. April was another five Saturday month and we won’t have another until July so we’ll be more in sync for a while.

           

We will be using book one, the yellow one. There will be a yellow book and colorful Post-it’s near our sign-in book where you are invited to choose a favorite song or two from the book

which we will play during our first half. This is a form of what Gene did when he and Lars helped out and they covered me during my recent absence. Thanks again gentlemen! Remember to pick at least one fairly easy song so everyone can join in on the fun.

Grand baby update:

My lovely granddaughter Teagan Leigh is heathy and happy. I miss her more and more every day. She’ll soon be three weeks old and just a little closer to learning the ukulele. Lol!
