Critical Algorithm Studies: a Reading List | Social Media Collective
This list is an attempt to collect and categorize a growing critical literature on algorithms as social concerns. The work included spans sociology, anthropology, science and technology studies, geography, communication, media studies, and legal studies, among others. Our interest in assembling this list was to catalog the emergence of “algorithms” as objects of interest for disciplines beyond mathematics, computer science, and software engineering.

Accessible images for everyone | Twitter Blogs
Positive news, but... The feature is not available on the Web? Will we be able to see the alt text descriptions on the Web or on our clients if we're not using a screen reader? Why not? And they list a few accessibility-focused Twitter clients in the announcement, but can those clients possibly comply with Twitter rules? At least one of the authors complains about regularly getting cut off from the API.

She Wanted to Do Her Research. He Wanted to Talk ‘Feelings.’ - The New York Times
A great chorus of formal condemnation shall be lifted up, and my male colleagues will sputter with gall, appalled by the actions of bad apples so rare they have been encountered by every single woman I know.
What would it take to actually stop this from happening so often?

Questions for Apple - Lawfare
Can you explain to this committee why Apple should be immune from liability for the activity of third parties on its systems while simultaneously engineering its systems to impair law enforcement's ability to investigate and prosecute criminal and terrorist activity by third parties?

Do people who write these hypotheticals consider the results of replacing Apple with "General Motors" or "gun manufacturers" or the manufacturers of any other tools that could possibly be used during the commission of a crime?

Deposing Tim Cook - Lawfare
Is this a common rhetorical tactic among US intelligence officials? Arguing that Apple has given in to authoritarian pressure in dictatorial regimes and so they should do the same in the US? That it's somehow offensive for Apple to speak up against government overreach in the US if they're not speaking up equally in other markets where their employees are likely to be thrown in jail?
