The highly skilled urologists at Phelps provide care using the most advanced treatments, including the latest nonsurgical, minimally invasive surgeries using the da Vinci surgical robot.

The benefits of robotic surgery (also called robot-assisted surgery, open surgery or laparoscopic surgery) over open surgery or laparoscopic surgery include less blood loss, less pain and shorter hospital stays. The da Vinci robot’s instruments are smaller and much more flexible than human hands to help make surgery more precise than ever before. Learn more about robotic surgery at Phelps.

Enlarged prostate

Don’t ignore the symptoms

Enlarged prostate, also called benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), is a common condition. The prostate may get larger as you age, and BPH is found in about half of men ages 51 to 60.

BPH can lead to the need to urinate more frequently, as often as every couple of hours. It can also cause other problems with urination. Sometimes, it can make you unable to urinate at all, a problem that requires emergency treatment. BPH may cause:

  • Feeling of bladder fullness
  • Urgency to urinate
  • Weak urine flow
  • Pushing or straining to urinate
  • Urine flow that starts and stops several times

BPH is not cancer, but it should not be ignored. If left untreated, enlarged prostate can cause serious problems, like blood in the urine or even kidney damage.

Laser treatment for enlarged prostate

At Phelps, the Greenlight XPS can be used to treat BPH. Greenlight is a laser procedure that reduces BPH symptoms. In a study, Greenlight patients saw faster recovery times and fewer complications than patients who had traditional prostate surgery for BPH.

Laser treatment for BPH means little bleeding, so even men taking blood thinners may be able to use it. After treatment, you may be able to stop taking BPH medicines, although you and your doctor may decide that medicines may keep your symptoms from coming back or getting worse.
