Obstetrics and maternity care
About us
At Phelps Hospital, we understand the profound significance of childbirth. Our family-centered approach provides personalized care, from comprehensive prenatal education to expert postpartum support.
We offer a range of services, including prenatal classes, labor and delivery support, flexible visiting hours, and lactation consulting. Our goal is to empower you with the knowledge and confidence to embrace this special time.
Family-centered cesarean birth
During a cesarean section (C-section), you can witness your baby's birth through clear drapes, creating a profound connection from the very first moment. This approach also enables mothers to hold their baby skin-to-skin and initiate breastfeeding in the operating room, setting the stage for healthy bonding and beginnings.
Board-certified neonatologists on-site 24/7
You can feel confident in our comprehensive neonatal care, supported by a highly qualified team of neonatologists available around the clock. These specialists are equipped to attend deliveries as needed, providing critical evaluations and care from the very first moments of life.
Our dedicated neonatal team doesn't just stop at delivery. They are involved in every step of your newborn's early journey, from initial assessment to developing care plans tailored to your baby’s needs. Before you leave the hospital, our neonatologists will provide thorough discharge instructions, ensuring you have the knowledge and confidence to continue caring for your newborn at home.
Postpartum care and bonding
Our postpartum unit offers serene, private rooms for your precious first days with your newborn. With "rooming-in" practices aligned with the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations, we encourage constant parent-newborn contact to foster bonding and facilitate a smooth transition to home life. Our expert nursing staff is always available to answer questions.
We also offer a highly skilled photographer who can capture the magic of your newborn's first moments. The photographer spends time with each family, creating timeless pieces of art that you will treasure forever.
The night before discharge, our renowned chef will craft a delightful meal tailored to your dietary preferences, allowing you to celebrate the arrival of your newborn and the beginning of your family.
Breastfeeding support
Our nursing staff will help you begin breastfeeding within the first hour after your baby is born. And our international board-certified lactation consultants (IBCLC) and mother-baby nurses provide individualized instruction and help for breastfeeding mothers.
We are very proud to be able to offer donor milk for babies who need supplementation. Donor milk contains the many dozens of beneficial ingredients that breast milk offers.
Phelps nurses and lactation consultants have been uniquely successful in encouraging and assisting mothers in breastfeeding. Phelps was recognized by the New York State Department of Health as one of the top 10 hospitals statewide with the highest percentage of mothers who successfully initiate breastfeeding their newborns.
