TLC Studios & Media Lab

Week 5: Biographical Comics: I pair off students, and they learn to interview each other to create a one- page comic about the other person’s life. They also learn how to draw likenesses of real people in cartoon/caricature form. Students can later use these skills to create reports of famous and other real people using the comics medium for school or just for fun.
TLC Studios is excited to welcome <a href="https://www.jtstories.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Jonathan Todd</a>, author/illustrator of TIMID and 2024 New England Book Award winner, for a six-week course all about comics and cartoons. 
These hands-on sessions are centered around building creative skills and channeling inspiration. Whether you’re an avid graphic novel lover ready to create your own story or an artist excited to try something new, one or more of these sessions will be right for you. 
The classes are designed for students ages 7-17, but educators are also invited to participate as a way to explore comics-making in the classroom. You are invited to join one or all six weeks.

Beginning jewelry making students will learn the fundamental techniques for designing and fabricating a sterling silver textured band ring. Students will learn how to texture, file, form, solder, sand, and polish the ring. All materials will be provided, including sterling silver, copper (for practicing techniques), solder, and sandpaper. A materials fee of $40 is payable to the instructor on the day of the class.

Plugged In Band Program

Plugged In Band Program's <a href="https://www.pluggedinband.org/betweenthenotes" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Between the Notes Winter Intersession</a> starts the week of January 13th and is open to any youth, teen, 20-something or adult. Between the Notes is designed as short introductions to Plugged In's typical semester-long classes and to fill the gaps during vacation. Plugged In is a unique, inclusive nonprofit music program where musicians of all levels and needs are welcome. Bands are grouped by age, skill level and musical interest.
Between the Notes Winter Intersession programs, which runs from January 13, 2025 - February 16, 2025, include Band Class, Songwriting, Drum Circle, Songwriting of Taylor Swift and Live Streaming 101.
Plugged In is proud to participate in <a href="https://massculturalcouncil.org/organizations/card-to-culture/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Mass Cultural Council's Card to Culture program</a> in collaboration with the Department of Transitional Assistance, the Department of Public Health's WIC Nutrition Program, the Massachusetts Health Connector, and hundreds of organizations by making cultural programming accessible to those for whom cost is a participation barrier. Enrollment in Between the Notes Winter Intersession is now open. Private Music Lessons have rolling enrollments. Eversource invites members of the Dover, Needham &amp; Westwood communities to attend a series of in-person/remote events to discuss a proposed underground electric transmission cable replacement project along Chestnut Street in Needham, Dedham Street in Dover and Westfield Street in Westwood. The proposal is part of a larger program Eversource is conducting throughout its service territory in Massachusetts related to underground cable modernization. This initiative is designed to modernize cable infrastructure, improve outage restoration times, and ensure long-term energy reliability by replacing existing underground fluid filled (HPFF) electric transmission lines with cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) electric transmission cable technology. Information about the project is available in other languages by request.

Week 6: Informational Comics: Comics are great tools to communicate educational and instructional information, including science, history and how to accomplish certain tasks—such as how to cook a favorite dish. In this workshop, we’ll practice breaking up information and translating into a fun, comics form, whether it’s a comic about Australian animals or the invention of the telephone.

Learn the basic fundamentals of metalsmithing, while incorporating personal design touches. Multiple soldering and finishing techniques will be covered, and individual design is encouraged. A materials fee of $100 is payable to the instructor on the first day of the class.

You will be introduced to and practice cutting, filing, basic annealing and soldering along with, a variety of hand tools and basic good workshop practices. Make earrings, a pendant or start of something more.
