The road trip out to French Pass is very arduous and in places quite precipitous for the faint hearted, but ultimately worth the effort. Be prepared for a long day as much as three hours outbound and the same back of course. Hills are steep so be sure of your car. There is virtually nowhere to buy refreshments so take everything you need. Someday tourism will discover this place, so get in now before the experience is spoiled. French Pass itself is breathtaking. It is astonishing that sometimes if you are lucky a large ship may be spotted sailing through.The waters themselves are very dangerous with powerful currents, upwellings and even currents that can drag people under, yet just around the corner is a tranquil bay with a campsite. Get in there and enjoy. January to March is the best time.

Drove the route to Elaine Bay in Feb. 2016. Unfortunately the trees have grown up along the roadside so that views of the bay from the road are now few and far between.
