Today’s Advent Gospel Reading:

2 Corinthians 5:21

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Romans 5:6, 8-10

For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly…. but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.  For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.

Matthew 27:59-60

He humbled Himself.

Christ humbled himself to become flesh, to be born in a cattle stall as He entered this earthly life.

Christ humbled himself further, to die a death on the cross for mankind.

How have we humbled ourselves for others?

John 19:34

The Advent of Christ, The King!

John 18:37

 Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”

Mark 15:16-19

And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion.  And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him.  And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”  And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him.

John 19:5

Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in him.”  So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!”  When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.”

John 19:14-16a

Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”  They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”  So he delivered him over to them to be crucified.

Mark 15:20

And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.

John 19:16b-18

So they took Jesus,  and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha.  There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them.

Isaiah 53:4-6

Surely he has borne our griefs
    and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
    smitten by God, and afflicted.
 But he was pierced for our transgressions;
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
    and with his wounds we are healed.
 All we like sheep have gone astray;
    we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.

This King didn’t come with a celebration of a royal birth or the funeral of a royal, but He is the King that rules my life, not because of anything I have done.  I was a sheep, gone astray.  He took on my chastisement and brought me peace.  All glory and praise to the King of Kings!!

Mark 14:55

Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none.

Mark 14:61b-62a

“Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” And Jesus said, “I am..”

John 18:17b

“You also are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.”

‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.’

And the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? You have heard his blasphemy. In today’s Advent Gospel reading, Christ is in the Garden of Gethsemane, praying, grieving, and conceding to His Father’s will.   As Christ is arrested, his disciples scatter and it leaves an unsettled feeling, but then we see the glorious outpouring love of our Father in Romans.

Matthew 26:38-45

Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.”  And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”  And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour?  Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”  Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.”  And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.  So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again.  Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on.See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Zechariah 13:7

“Awake, O sword, against my shepherd,
    against the man who stands next to me,”
declares the Lord of hosts.

Father, Thank You for unsettled feelings, and thank You for giving us the Only Way to make things right, in fellowship with You.  Amen

First of all, I want to thank you all for the comments here and on Facebook.  Each one is such an encouragement to me.  Sharing Scripture with you is my heart, first and foremost.

This kit has become one of my top favorites.  I like the rustic, simple feel and the colors seem to be so relaxing to me.  I hope you are all enjoying it and can find ways to use it that will bless your family and friends.

In yesterday’s Advent reading, it was proclaimed that Jesus is “the Christ, the Son of the Living God.”

Today, we see Christ humbling Himself to become a servant, even when He knew He would be betrayed by those He lived with, ate with, prayed with, communed with,  and He still comforts and encourages them.

Today’s reading:

Matthew 16:23

But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

Philippians 2:7

[He] emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, born in the likeness of men.

John 13:4b-5

He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist.  Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

John 13:21b

“Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”

Mark 14:27

And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’

Mark 14:31

But he said emphatically, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all said the same.

“Let not your hearts be troubled.”

Our Almighty Father, during this Advent season, help us to humble ourselves to serve and encourage others, even those we expect to betray us.  Let us show love to the unlovable, serve those who won’t be grateful, encourage those who are broken and untrustworthy, in the likeness of Christ, all for Your glory.  Amen

Acts 10:38b

He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

    he shall be high and lifted up,

Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.

John 14:9a

Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me?

Father God, Thank you for lifting up your Son, on the tree, so that those who believe may have eternal life.  Thank you for revealing Christ to us, the Son of the Living God.  Open the eyes of those who do not yet know Jesus.  This we ask in His precious name, Amen.
